It is almost impossible for one to be good and amiable, under such adverse circumstances. Clara and I had a very disagreeable discussion this morning, about my helping to do the ironing. She is very unreasonable, and Tom always sides with her. I am willing to do certain kinds af work, but not the kinds that makes my hands red and rough. I read not long ago in a magazine, that well kept hands were indicative of a true lady.
