THAT COMET THE ASXBOSOUEBS TOtDUSOF. The Republican desires to congratu late its readers upon the failure of that comet to interfere with this issue. The eollisionists agreed that the destruction of the world could not be delayed longer than last night, and we may therefore rejoice that man are doing business at the old stand. Why should an astronomer prophecy disaster from a comet? In all. the experience of this sphere there is no record of any difficulty with a comet, while hundreds of thousands of men who have predicted collisions with comets have proven false prophets.

A man does not show the proper respect for his reputation by insisting a comet-whirling through space is apt to put on the brakes and wait for a hostile visit from the earth- The earth has no grudge against the comet and we believe that any ordinarily well balanced cemet, whether it belongs to Biela or some one else would not maliciously pass out of its regular course to do us harm. We can especially see no reason for fearing a comet that does not come close enongh to be visible to the naked eye, and we advise our readers to borrow no uneasiness about this particular comet until the astronomers agree that it is moving toward the earth and not from it. We think that professional astronomers owe it to the general public to get together sufficiently to determine whether a comet is going from or coming towards the earth, before they attempt to disturb our dreams by predictions of dire calamity. Those unfamiliar with the mysteries of astronomy are not concerned so much about the size of a comet as about its course, and the average man would prefer that astronomers f-pend less time in measuring a comet and more time in getting its bearings. It materially affects our opinion of a comet and its liability to collide with us to find out first which way it is moving.

Re turn was made to-day before Judge Simonton in the Dauphin county court upon the writ of quo warranto issued upon the application of Attorney-Gen eral liensel against the Order of Vesta, a beneficial concern having headquarters in this city, the writ demanding that cause be shown why a decree should not be issued dissolving the corporation. The order was incorporated in this city four years ago last Thursday with C. Oscar Beasely as national president and Charles H. Edmunds as national secretary. The collapse of the Iron Hall and other similar organizations have had a depressing effect upon the organization, and six weeks ago the national officers decided to make an assignment.

The order has at the present time but one thousand members, although the appraised assets are claimed to amount to nearly ninety thousand dollars. The Philadelphia press in speak ing of Mrs. Lease's senatorial aspirations says that she would not add to the dignity of the senate but that she is as well, if not better, qualified to sit as a member than some of the men who are now serving in that capacity.

Young gentlemen who cherish a se cret hankering for football and yet lack the courage to take an active part in the game may find it an agreeable sub stitute to retire to a secluded place and fall down a long flight of stairs at reg ular intervals. Chicago News. NOT A PARTY BUT A PROTEST. Mrs. Lease says: The democratic porty is not a party, it is a protest.

It is a protest agaiast temperance, against truth, and, in fact, a protest against everything that is true and good. It is a coward, and after pledging reforms is afraid to give them. It professes to be opposed to protection and yet will not give the country free trade. But the seeds of dissatisfaction have already been planted in the south, and while they are a little slow down there, they will come around to our way of thinking in time. FOR OK AGAINST.

The democratic party will soon be monarch of all it surveys, legislatively and executively speaking. As the party at Chicago, from the platform and through the press, proclaimed that protection is unconstitutional and a national iniquity it will be guilty of compounding with felony or giving thp lie to its own words if it delays a holy minute to repeal the McKinley law. From the declarations and promises made it must be absolute free trade. No tinkering and glittering generality distinctions without differences will do. They must repeal or virtually endorse protection.

Gypsum Advocate. But Brother Amos, they will not do it. The democracy never do what they say in their platform ought to be done. KANSAS NEWSPAPERS. After all there is a great deal of abil ity of high order in Kansas newspapers.

We sometimes think that because we have never developed any Halsteads or Greeleys or Reids that we have rather mediocre talent in the journalistic field in Kansas, but when you sit down and take up your exchanges such as the Leavenworth Times and others that devote a column or two every day to clippings, you observe a great many bright and original things, and while none of our man have had an opportunity to tower above others in the national field, yet the sum total of ability displayed by the newspapers of Kansas is equal or superior to that of any other western state. The boom that we had probably had a more fatal effect on the finances of newspaper men than any other class, but in time this will be overcome and the newspaper business will be restored to its proper place in the business life of its community and the state. FOR THE BEST MAN. While the republicans elected to the Kansas Legislature are turning over in their minds the question of who shall be the next United States Senator, whether he shall be a "stalwart" or a "fusion" democrat or a Populist, would it not be well to consider the claims of that ofteu-talked-adout statesman, the "Best Man?" That gentleman has often been "mentioned" for the senate in Kansas as eisewnere, wny not make this opportunity? If there is any doubt as to his identity it may de said by way of explanation that he is the man the office has been seeking so long. Everybody will know him by that description.

If the republicans will stand by the "Best Man" the democrats and populists may come to him; at least he is the man they have said that they were after. The "Best Man" when chosen will reveal himself once by seyeral gculiarities which will endear him to ansas. He will not be a boodler. He will write his own speeches. He will be perfectly trustworthy.

When he gives his word to do or perform anything; even to making a speech, he will keep it. He will not change his opinions on public questions oftener than once a month. He will not be a crank. He will not "play horse." He will hot be a word-monger or a phrase maker. He will know when he has had enough.

Everybody must know the "Best Man" at first sight. Let him be the next United States Senator from Kansas. Kansas City Star. We wish to thank the Star for this effort to secure the election of a Repuo-lican U. S.

Senator. The Star has for a long time claimed to be an independ ent paper, but its zealous efforts in be half of democracy have caused the great majority of readers to smile at its claim of independency; This open and avowed support of a republican to succeed Sena tor Perkins indicates a disposition, on the part of the Start to atone in a measure lor its partisan course for the past THE AMERICAN PTBLlC HEALTH ASSOCIATION AND THE INTERNATIONAL MEDICAL. New York, Nov, 29. A dispatch from London says that the licensing committee ot the London County Council has compelled George Washington Moore, better known as Poney Moore, the well known minstrel and manager of the Moore and Burgess troupe, to dispense with the services of his son-in-law, Charley Mitchell, the bJowrhard pugilist, as a perquisite to the issue of a music and dancing license for Moore's Washington Music Hall in Battersea, of which Moore has been manager up to a week ago. Moore protested that Mitchell had three children and that it was pretty hard to be compelled to drive his son-in-law out of work, but the committee, led by Hon Hood Barr, was obdurate, and Moore was compelled to sign an agreement that Mitchell should not be seen about his place for the next twelve months before a vote on the renewal of the license was taken. Mitchell's appeal from the sentence of imprisonment, passed upon him for his brutal assault upon an aged inoffensive pedestrian, comes up next month at the Middlesex sessions, and both in pugilistic and legal circles the opinion is expressed that the conviction and sentence will be affirmed, and that Mitchell will have to break stone or pick oakum for a couple of months.
