Chairman Harnum, of the Democratic Nutional Committee, writhes featfullj over the result. His attempt to get up a contest over the vote of New York is only done (o let himself down easy. We call the attention of the National Board of lie to that fearful tench whence comes it Can it Le possible that the Democratic party in not yet buried A man was bitten by a craz man in Topeka, the other da, and it is feared he will die from the effects of the bite. The bite of an insane man is said to be extremely dangerous. The eastern railroads have been having a high old time for a week or two, cu tting rates.

An immense number of people have taken ad vantage of the reduced rate to go east. The war still rages. The Valley Echo is the name of George McCardell's new Greenback paper, published at Cottonwood, Kas. From the frequency with which Sam Wood's name appears in the number at hand, George seems 10 be serving as that statesman's echo. Better quit your old Greenback tomfoolery, George, and go to running a paper like Gen.

Hancock ran his tariff campaign on home local issue. Aside from your so-called politics, George, here's to your success. The Kansas Temperance Palladium having fought a good fight, kept the faith and finished its course, has ceased to exist. Its noble young editor, Mr. James A.

Troutmau, has done valiant service for prohibition, for the State, and for humanity. May the Giver of all good shower rich blessings upon him, prolonging his opportunities for usefulness and filling up the measure ol his years with that joy which comes only from the conciousncss ot life's work well done. Did any one see one of those dirty circulars about Mr. Crane, which were printed for circulation on election day No one could be found mean enough or brave enough to peddle them in Marion Centre. How was it elsewhere in the cojnty Record.

We had lots ef them in this county. They were posted up near the several voting places before daylight, and the names of Frank N. Rogers, J. II. Costello and R.

C. Coble were attached to them to help carry out the deception. Chase County Leader. We suppose the names ef these gentlemen were lorged by the midnight rascal who stuck up the bills, tor cer tainly neither of them could have signed the infamous documents. Peabody Gazette Republicans from all parts of the county pay the highest compliments to Mr.

W. C. Lockwood, the energetic Chairman of our County Central Committee He richly deserves the thanks of the whole Republican party, as well as of the successful candidates, for tke able manner in which he has conducted the campaign. His duty was laborious, but he has fulfiled every requirement fully, and is entitled to the general plaudit, "well done, good and servant." Ij. V.

MN ADVANCE. KHt'erud at the Tost Office, at Marion Centre, Knxsa- as second-class matter; FRIDAY, SOV. 12, 18S0. Wade Hampton's present address is the headwaters of Salt river. Moiru Cotrhty "Times (Democratic): "Our rooster turned out to be a hen." The Republican pa'ty has gone partly over to the Greenbaekeis.

It believes iii inflating its majorities, anyhow. Lost, strayed or stolen one Greenback party. A liberal reward will be paid for information as to its whereabouts. The First Congressional District in his Slate gives the largest majority of any Congressional district in the Union 20,000. One hundred and thirty ladies, from Lake Erie Seminary, visited General Garfield, the other day.

It is sweet to be a President elect. The Gazette says the Peabody barbers charge Democrats fifteen cents a shave, now. Can't afford to shave them for ten cents, any longer, their faces are so long. Garfield's popular majority is stated to be about 1C0.000. With a full vote and a fair counr, in the south as well as in the north, it would have been a half million.

II. C. Bruce, colored, brother of Senator Bruce, of Mississippi, came within twcntj-nine votes of being elected to the Legislature from Atchison. "The world do move." The editor of the Canton Monitor, though a Democrat, still has some music in his soul. He has bought a fifty-dollar violin, and offers his survices to dancing parlies "for a small remuneration." Crane only got eight hundred and six majority in Morris county.

That is, that waa all up to last accounts, but they aro probably still voting over there, and it is no telling what the majority will be when the returns all get in. A sad report comes from a few miles from town, of a poor woman alarmingly ill with pneumonia, with no one but small children to wait upon her, and with a half crazy husband making a bad state of affairs as much worse as he can. The majority in the State for the prohibition amendment is now estimated at ten thousand. Had the proposition been submitted in an "off" year, unencumbered by other amendments, it would have received a very much iarger majority. An enthusiastic young saloon keeper stood at the polls all day, in Lawrence, scratching the word "against" the amendment.

He thought the proposition was "for" or "against" the right to sell liquor, and he said he was "for'1 it. Bright by. Gen. Hancock says he regrets it more for the country than for his own sake. We do hope that the General will not lose much sleep grieving for his country on this score.

The country is all right fr, as the Peabody Glee Club sings, "Jim Garfield's at the front." It was an awful test of Republican gallantry, but it was no time for sentimental foolishness, and so Miss Sarah Democratic candidate tor State Superintendent, was rejected, if it was leap year. The Republican party loves the ladies, but it likes to do its own proposing. Secretary Sherman signifies his will ingness to accept Garfield's Senatorial mantle. The Secretary, of course, would wear It worthily, but there is a very general feeling that "Old Resumption" should stay where he is! We should like to see John Sherman Secretary of the Treasury until every dollar of the national debt is honestly paid. We let our Greenback neighbor, the McPherson Leader, tell how it was in that county To say we were scooped would only We a faint conveyance of the result in McPherson county.

The Republicans, on the national ticket, have about 2,211 votes, the Democrats 068 votes, and the Greenbackers 528 votes. Party lines were very closely drawn, and the falling off from the estimated Greenback vote is almost unaccountable. The Bapiist ladies of Wichita are fciuart They purchased th telegraphic privileges of the city for election night, and renting a hall charged admission to. the only place in, town where the latest news could be learned. With the aid of refreshments which they served during the night, they cleared the handsome sum.

of one hundred and fifty dollar. Hprjah for the Baptist ladies of Wichita, The Gazette is modest, and last week, in according honor to whom it thought honor was doe, for Republican success in Marion county, it said nothing about the very effective work done by the good old Gazette itself. Though the Worthy editor was too modest to justice to hjmselF while, perhaps too generous to ethers, the people will not fail to Inscribe his name high up on the j'Hof honor. 214 to 110 foi prohibition. All hail.

PECULIARITIES OF THE COUNTY YOTE. MKION Gov. St. John only ran behind Garfield 21 votes, and behind Ryan 2 votes. Garfield's majority over the combined opposition vote is 430.

Ovwr Hancock, 701. Grant township, which claims to be the banner Greenback township, didn't give Reder, the regular Greenback candidate for Representative, a single vote. Peabody township is tha only township which gave a majority for the constitutional convention. That was a compliment to Judge Peters, more than anything else. The majority against it in the county is 1,053.

Sam Bown got more votes than any other man on the county ticket, except Reed, who had no opposition. Brockett has the largest plurality, 283. One hundred and fifty-one voters are opposed to exempting 200 from taxation, and 1,719 in favor of it. No man ever before had the distinction whic'i Gen. Garfield enjoys to-day.

He is a member of Congress. Senator elect and President elect. What a country is this What posibilities lie in the way of American boyhood The cultured scholar, the gie.it statesman who bears all these deserved honors, was a poor farmer's boy. and has won his way to the top of the goMon ladder of fame by indomitable energy, -persevering, unceasing toil. With no rich relatives to help him, with no distinguished family name to lend him assistance, with no resources save a strong body and a strong mind, he has come up gradually but grandly through all the vicissitudes of poverty, and step by step, by his own inherent greatness, he lias worked and won his way through the various gradations of earthly honors, till he has at last been chosen Chief Magistrate of the greatest nation on earth.

The life of James A. Garfield is an inspiration to every struggling boy and young man in the land, in whose bosom burns a longing and laudable ambition to be something and to do something worthy of manhood. The contemplation of such a life not only challenges our profound admiration for the man, but inspires a new and deeper love for the glorious country which makes such a life possible. The solid Democratic delegation in Congress from our old State, Kentucky, has been broken by the election of John I). "White, Republican, in the Ninth district.

White is a talented young man, who has served one term in Congress prior to the last term, and was the youngest man in the House. The Legislature gerrymandered the districts, and White was elected to stay at home Hut he has gained on his opponents and defeats them again, it is said, by l.oOO. The Legislature will have to doctor that district again. Things are sfrowmc serious with the Democrats even in Kentucky. The Home Record, from that worthy institution the Home of the Friendless, at Leavenworth, acknowledges recent favors from Peabody as follows There are times when words so poorly express our.

feelings that we are tempted to be silent. The kindness and sympathy lately received from our friends in Peabody have touched our hearts. Th collections received in the churches were large under the circumstances, there being a temperance meeting at the time for which money was to be raised. They also send us an unusually large list of subscribers for our paper; and the enthusiastic efforts of the ladies (too nomerous to -be mentioued by name.) to secure for us food and clothing can be requited only by the blessings of Heaven. May this blessing ever be theirs.

Their donations in kiud are already at hand, and came in most excellent order, and we were most surprised by the number and value of the gifts. Shedding crocodile tears oyer poor workingmen's woes, by individuals who have never hurt themselves workin--, that any one has ever heard of, is getting to be a triile less popular and proGt-able in this country, since the election, but it is still indulged in by a few fellows. Th vrorkingmen were not bamboozled to a very alarming extent by the whangdoodle twaddle of this class of demagogues, a3 far as we can jndge by the election returns, and we predict that appeals to them based upon the assumption that any considerable number of them are either tools or knaves, will grow beautifully less as they have new opportunities to record their votes lor free speech, unintimidated vote, a fair good government and honest monov.
