T. D. Davis was called to the cbair. Hon. Edward Russell then gave an informal talk on his experiences in Missouri around St.

Joseph and in north eastern Kansas from 1S54 to 1S63. He came from Alabama to St. Joseph and the only thing that saved his neck was that he could say he was from Alabama. He was editor of a free state paper in Doniphan county for some years. Was elected to the free state convention held at Lawrence December 3d, 1557.

He attended most if not all of the conventions for a number of years held by the free state men. Mr. Russell related many pathetic and laughable experiences which he had on both sides of the Missouri river. Col. II.

M. Greene was present and testified to much that Mr. Russell said. It was altogether a very pleasant meeting of the club, with an uncommonly large audience. The death of Judge Hendry was feelingly refer-ed to.

The next meeting will be the first Thursday ia March. J. M. Shep- ard will give us the workings of the underground railroad in old Virginia, and we may expect the Rev. T.

D. Davis to speak also. The question arose about the oldest man in Lawrence. It was said that Mr. Buck-8 er, living in east Lawrenc, was about 100 vears old.
