Eggert. who live a couple of miles north of town, were town transacting business in their usually cheerful and happy way. About 5 o'clock in the evening Mr. Eggert, while conversing with the writer, untied his horse, got in the buggy with Mrs and drove home. That night while Mrs.

Eggert was sitting in front ot the stove warming her feet, preparatory to retiring, we presume, and being in the best of health apparently, having not been complaining, she suddenly drew backward a struggling manner and fell from the chair dead. "Words can not express the fear-fulness of the shock his gave the loved ones whose happiness was thus changed to deepest sorrow in so brief a moment. Was it true? Oh yes, too true. Oh the sadness there in that once happy home! 'A kind mother, a loving wife. But gone, yes gone to a better land.

No one knows what a moment mav bring forth. Like many people on the frontier, battling for existence in a pioneer life. Mr. and Mrs. Eggert for a number of years were somewhat limited financially, but the present year brought them good crops and thev had just Bnished paying for their valuable home of several hundred acres, and gotten in a condition, with reference to this world's goods, so that they could live well and enjoy at least, some of the luxuries of life.

But all is now changed, and all that the many friends of the bereaved husband and children can do, is to sincerely express their profound sympathy for them in this, their saddest moments. She leaves a husband and eight children to mourn her loss. The funeral sermon was preached yesterday at the M. E. church by Rev.

Whinery and the remains laid to rest in the Dighton cemetery with appropriate ceremonies. Welter Rankin, an attorney of Ottumwa, Iowa, brother-in-law of J. II. Schiereck, is here on a visit. Mr.

Rankin was a resident of Dighton during boom times. As will be seen in another column Mr. W. H. Lee has purchased the Undertakers supplies of N.

I. Hittle and will henceforth conduct the Lane county business in that liue, J. II. -Finn having retired from the business. Mr.

Lee has had considerable experience in this and the furniture business, which he will also engage in, and we wish him the utmost success. His goods for the present will be kept in the Holtou Smith block, up stairs, until a more convenient business room can be provided. I have just received my stock of Xmas goods and now is your time to bu' while the stock is yet complete. It consists of White sewing machines, Silverware of all kinds, Granite and Rlue enameled ware. Come and see for vourself and get my prices before you buy elsewhere.

D. Freeman, who had a can- cer removed from his lip some- over a year ago and thought he had been cured permanently, again becoming affected in a Fomewhat similar way. It is rather early yet but he and his folks are very much afraid that he will experience another serious time like the one before. We hope no grounds for the apprehension will be found. He began moving his family and effects to this week preparatory to assuming the duties of county clerk to which office he was elected in November.

For the past few weeks Mr. E. T. Bower has been failing in health and has been closely confined to his room. At times for a number of years it has beeu very difficult for Mr.

Bowers to speak plain enough to be easily compre: bended, and now he is worse in that particular than ever. It is with great difficulty that Mrs. Bower can sufficiently understand him to properly minister to his wants. It is hoped that he may soon regain his voice and speedily recover from his attack. Look at our advertising columns would ve? Don't vou think these enterprising business men deserve your patronage? Now don't send your money in a lump to Kansas City for goods, out go to these men with the cash for the same bill you would get from there and see il yon cannot do as well.

And remember that the Kansas City house pavs do taxes here, contributes nothing to our schools, nothing with which to buy Xmas presents for an entertainment, nothing to charities, and buys none of your ggs, butter, etc. Some relatives of Register of Deeds II vames arrived testerdav rotu the east, bat we did not learn their names. It is believed that the trees could be obtained by paying the freight. The work would be donated. The Journal will give $2.50 toward it as a starter, if the people will get together and decide to make it. go. If the churches want notices of their meetings published, they must look after the matter themselves.

The columns of the Journal are free for such notices, but we have too much work to do to keep track of everything.
