THE SPOON HOOK, WINFIELD, KANSAS, JUNE 14, 1906. THE SPOON HOOK SEWERAGE The people of Winlield are without THAT QUERY The following is a sample of the many letters received by this office regarding the query which appeared in the first issue of the Spoon Hook: "Editor Spoon Hook: "Am very much interested in the query appearing in the former issue of your valuable sheet, and desire to enter as a contestant for the prize chromo. You can possibly make it easier and lighten the work immeasurably to contestants by answering the following questions: "1. Was the reform mayor, spoken of formerly engaged in the mule business? "2. Are we to infer that the other grafter referred to, is baldheaded, with the exception of the fringe of red hair below the line of the hat band? "2.

In making estimates, are contestants to take into account the rake-of from macadam, curbing and guttering contracts in addition to those of waterworks and sewerage "4. Is it possible to extend the time until cooler weather and until all contracts have been made so that accurate and reliable estimates can be furnished? Please answer the above questions at your earliest convenience either through your paper or by private mail and greatly oblige your EAllNEST READER Beacham's Smokehouse for cool, delicious soft drinks. DAY IS DAWNING BYE. CM. By the selection of F.

D. Coburn, who finally resigned, and the subsequent selection of Judge A. W. Benson to represent Kansas in the U. S.

senate in the place of J. R. Gov. Hoch ushers a new fresh May morning into the political atmosphere of Kansas. It has the aroma of bloom and meadow.

The plotters and planners, the trap setters and the trap springers were all brushed aside. The Governor has thrust men to the front and theMort's the Cy's, the Dave's, the Bill's and Tom's are paralyzed. The men who cannot dictate Gov. Iloch's policy accuse him of having no backbone. The real trouble is that he lias too much backbone to be controlled by any one but Hoch.

F. D. Coburn declined the honor and duties of U. S. Senator for various reasons, but the one which came from deepest down in his heart, was that his familiarity with nature's products, his high regard for cattle and what are known as lower animals, unfitted him in taste and touch for association with political plotters, pie hunters and poker players at the Copeland; an inevitable sequence in Kansas polities as now played.

It is either train with the gang or war. Cobum did not want either. The most potent influence in Kansas policies is the Federal court, over which that wiley politician, John Pollock, presides. Mort Albaugh, who is clerk of the court, is it's field marshal; Cy. and Dave, and Bill, and the late "Judge" Smith are aids.

This coterie with their lieutenants in every representative district in the state propose to make or unmake Governors and U. S. Senators. That Gov. Hoch set them all at bay will be considered but little less than infamous.

We may now look for some "new evidence'2 of Iloch's incapacity" to be given out by the "gang." 2, we present some reading matter, carefully prepared by the editors and some of the best writers of our city. AVe particularly call your attention to the article on sewerage which was written at our request by a leading citizen who lias given the subject much thought and attention. It hits the nail on the head. We again call you attention to the fact that we are doing first class job printing at the old stand, corner of Tenth and Main, and solicit your patronage. As we said before, if we survive this issue, we will issue another, some time, POLICY The Spoon Hook is an independent paper.

Don't think the Spoon Hook is posing as a reform sheet far from it. We believe the best way to correct pub lic evils, is to give them publicity through the press. The people will do the rest.

For churches and their maintenance thev have ever been far in advance of their iiiianci.il ability, denying themselves therefor the comforts of home often, that they might thus testify their de votion to the faith that compasses them roundabout. The same is true of our schools and colleges, and such has been our pro gress in these respects that we are known by reason thereof overall Kan sas, and then some; and while all of this is true, we as people are filthy and contemptible. Look at our al leys, back grounds and stable yards, maintained in such foulness by so-called reputable Christian people, places from which after it rains -aye, all the time for that matter, the air is so poison and foul as to invite an epidemic of fevers that threatens misery and death all of us.

Then think if you dare how the closets and cess pools, from whence they percolate through the porous soil, and empty themselves of their foul and loath some contents into every well in the city, from whence the air we breathe and the water we drink is contaminated, until death hovers in every home, ready by reason thereof to take from us the purest and best. And all this in face of the fact that the last legislature passed a law providing the way and means whereby we can have a sewerage system, that will turn from us this fearful menace to the health and life of all. While every man and woman in the city is united in favor of the construction of that sewerage system, and the mayor and Qouncilmen concede the necessity thereof; -still. do noth ing to compass it. How how long are we to continue under these monstrous conditions, and why is it that the ollicers we employ do not go up and down these alleys, examine these back yards and st able yards, and take the so-called respectable element-by the nape of the neck and force them into the city court and convict them for their foulness, as well as all others contributing thereto? A miserable rum hole endangers the prosperity and happiness of a few, and these officers are swift to hunt the perpetrators, while the other endangers the prosperity and happiness, aye the health and life of all, and yet nothing is done, and the sewers that everybody clamor for go unbuilt, and no steps taken to construct the same, while the foulness aforesaid contaminates soil and air, and presumably this is to go on until in God's provi dence the vices complained of will manifest themselves in an epidemic that will enter every home in Win-field, and take from thence to the cemetery one or more victims from among us.

If it was some drunken vagrabond's breath, many of us would be trying to smell of it, but we smell of the foulness hereinbefore referred to without a grimace. Ye Gods, but we are foul and filthy, but in our self-satisfied, dogmatic theological contemplations, we know it not; and such is life in Winfield, "the Peerless Princess of the Plains. 50 lb sack flour for $1.05 at Williams' Cut Price Grocery. His actions would pass unnoticed, if it were not for the fact that he is frequently seen in sasinbers of important council committees. Later Greer lost him. Greer selected the representative and the people defeated him. Two years ago Bill selected the representative, which means Pollock and "the people be dam'd." It is now more than ever important that "Bill" and "Ed" should name the representative from this district, for Burton's friends need a "sympathiser'' in the place where Judge Banson goes. Judge Benson is an able man and stands at the front as a well as being fundamentally in accord with the spirit of the hour, the elimination of graft and special privileges from statute and commerce. It is now up to he people to say whether they are as well qualified to select a U.

We hereby enter a protest against the rosebud councilman from Fifth ward.

He has obstructed the street in front of his house by building a dangerous viaduct over the new gutter from his yard to the street. Some one is liable to run into it with a buggy and get a damage suit against the city. We want him arrested. Try a Nut Sunday with Nabisco wafers at Beacham's Smokehouse and be happy ever afterward. There is a feeling of unrest in business circles, due, to a large extent, to a lack of confidence in the present city administration..
