Chrisiiau Science Lecture. Edward A. Kimball, C. S. of Chicago, member of the Board of Lectureship of the First Church of Christ, (Scientist) Boston, will lecture in the Christian church, Saturday, March 15, at 8 p.

Kimball's lecturer "Edward A. Kimball of Chicago, the eminent Christian Scientist, delivered an excellent lecture to a large-sized audience Wednesday evening. Mr. Kimball is a pleasing, interesting, and finished speaker, who evidently knows what he is talking about. His enunciation is perfect; every word is distinctly uttered.

His reasoning is logical and convincing. The interest of his audience grows as he proceeds; there is not a wearisome moment during his entire discourse." Those who attended the state oratorical contest at the opera house Friday night had a real intellectual treat, and besides their sensibilities jwere not shocked by exhibitions of rowdyism which so often prevail on such occasions.

There was plenty of enthusiasm and plenty of noise, but no hat smashing, color grabbing or anything of the kind. It speaks well for K. C. and there were many compliments on the good conduct of our Winfield students. Homer Hoeh of Baker University took first place.

Another petitition is being circulated for an electric light proposition as follows: To the Honorable Mayor and Council-men of Winfield, Kansas: We, the undersigned resident tax payers of the city of Wintield, Kansas, do hereby respectfully petition your honorable body to call a special election to submit to the electors and legal voters of said city for their ad-adoption or rejection the following proposition, to-wit "Shall the city of Winfield, Kansas, issue or cause to be issued as now provided by law, bonds of said city in the aggregate sum of not exceeding thirty thousand ($30,000) dollars, and for so much of said sum as shall be necessary to pay the cost of building, erecting, equiping and maintaining in said city anew municipal electric light, heat and power plant to be built, owned and operated by said city under the supervision and control of its mayor and city council, for the use and benefit of said city and its inhabitants on such terms as its mayor and council-men shall direct. "Said bonds to be issued in the manner and denominations as provided by law and sold for not less than their face value or exchanged by said city from time to time for the payment of the erection of said plant and material used therein and labor performed and for such other uses of said in and about the erection and completion of said plant. Said bonds shall be due in not to exceed twenty years; the rate of interest and option for the payment of said bonds before due shall be fixed by the mayor and councilmen and inserted in said bonds and said interest shall not exceed six per cent per annum." E. college property inventory is over $70,000. All the obligations are fully covered by subscriptions, with $5,000 for endowment. The attendance is splendid and the college is in good condition. There was a small scrap on Ninth avenue Monday night in which two prominent physicians of the city were the participants.

There was but little damage done except to the ambient air. Dr. T. B. Tandy has been selected by the county commissioners as county health officer to succeed Dr.

C. M. Holcomb. Last Friday morning warrants were sworn out for the arrest of E. C.

Hors-man and Abe Farris on the charge of passing worthless checks. Prof, and Mrs. Gridley, formerly of S. K. C.

college, came down from Sa-lina to attend the oratoiical contest. Prof. Scaer of the Lutheran college was called to his old home in Ohio last week by the death of his father. Fred Davey and Bert Mentch went over to Grenola Tuesday night to buy a 1080-acre ranch. Josiah Grady has tiled suit for divorce against his wife, Minnie Grady.

He accuses her of gross neglect and abandonment. They were married in Arkansas City in March 1899 and afterward moved to Harris county, Texas. E. C. Horsman, charged with forging a note against his father, waived preliminary examination Saturday and was bound over to the district court.

The charge against Horsman and Abe Farris for securing money under false pretense was dismissed, and Farris was released. Last Thursday afternoon Wm. Mc-Grau fell from a building a distance of about thirty feet, while doing carpenter work on North Millington street. No feones were broken, but his injuries were very serious. The Masonic lodge is looking after his needs.

His daughter from Texas is here taking care of him. The receipts for the Winfield post-office have passed the sixteen thousand dollars mark and the salary of the postmaster will be increased one hundred dollars per annum. Harry Fancher of Indiana was in the city the first of the week renewing old acquaintances. He was on his way to the new country, where he expects to make his home. Dr.

E. B. Emory has bought the building on Main street occupied by Parker Bros, and Mrs. Etta Barton. It was formerly owned by Hilt Jen-ning, and the price paid was $6000.

The county attorney is fixing to go after the gamblers with a sharp stick. There is no worse class of men in any community than the tin horn gambler who has a room off in some secluded place where he and his pals entice young men and get up gambling games. All such should be hunted down by the officers of the law without mercy. No officer can do his duty and not be able to locate these places, and when located he ought to nab them quick. Courier.

Mrs. J. W. Millspaugh died Monday of the grip. She was nearly eighty years old and was one of Cowley county's pioneers.
