Among the guests present were Miss Newhall, Miss York, Miss Wood Miss Yocum, Miss Davis, Miss Collister, Miss Mollie McQuiddy, Miss Birdsey, Miss Lewis, Miss Clark, Messrs. Ed get Thatch er, Randall Puterbaugh, Holmes, Bradt, Clark. Music and dancing were the order of the evening. In due time the guests were requested to pay their respects to a splendid collation, which was served In a manner befitting the occaslen. It is unnecessary to remark that everybody enjoyed themselves muchly.

and Mrs. P. M. Killam were suddenly summoned by telegraph last Wed nesday to Sumner County. Mr.

Killams nephew a little boy seven years old, son of Mr. W. H. Kibbe climbed up to a shelf on the wall took down a pistol pointed it toward his little sister (two years old) and fired it of. The ball struck her in the top of the head passed down and came out just back of the right ear.

The litre girl lived until three o'clock the' next afternoon. The little fellow had no idea of the consequences which would follow from playing with a pistol, he had seen older persons fool with the weapon and boy like wanted to act like "a big man." The little girl Cora, was a bright beautiful child and the pet of the household. Her loss will be deeply felt by the family and other relatives. Omaha, June 5. Three herders were killed by Indians, twenty-five miles south of Sidney, in this State, on Saturday last.

A dispatch received at military headquarters to-day, dated the 4th states that a courier arrived from Red Cloud this morning and says that Yellow Robe arrived at the Agency six days ago from the hostile camp. Eighteen hundred and six lodges on the Rosebud were about to leave for Powder river, below the point 6f the Crazy Horse fight. The Indians say they will fight, and have three thousand warriors. The call for the State Republican convention, and also the Third Congressional District convention were unavoidably crowded out of last week's issue. On account of leal technicality, Sup't. Faatz was obliged to recall the appointment of JonN Reid as clerk of the School Board.

Mr. Reid requested that some one else be appointed to the vacancy, and on petition of the citizens, Mb. II. V. Hubbard was appointed.

Mrs. J. L. Caveney and four children started, Friday last, to visit relatives in Franklin county, Penn'a. They will visit the centennial before returning to Newton.

O. B. Hilldreth has purchased J. L. Caveney's residence on Fifth street, and will occupy it immediately.

Mrs. J. J. Barker is visiting her invalid father in Emporia. Mr.

A. Boylan found a nest of four genuine 3'oung American Eagles at Lakin, a few days ago. Banks found his horse which was lost hist April, at Little Walnut, Butler count-, this week. Mrs. J.

Du. II. Seaton had a present last week of two very peculiar looking birds, caught at Sedgwick. The Doctor tried to tell the boys that the birds are "balled Eagles" but the boys "wont have it." The new Dodge City Times is a lively newsy sheet. May success attend it.

The National Convention Convenes at Cincinnatti on Wednesday the 14th inst. Two new ponev switch engines have arrived here, nos4S) and 50. The 49 is for the Newton yard, and the 50 goes to Pueb lo. We expect Henry Walker will put on lots of frills over his new engine. Mr.

W. J. Ross, recently of Emporia has been appointed manaser of the New ton telegraph office, vice Mr. Collister re signed. Mr.

Stevens says he is not the sewing machine agent referred to in last Sunday's sermon. The proverb says, "Laugh and grow fat." What a saving of corn it would be if pigs could laugh. The exercises will no doubt be pleasing, enter taining, and instructive, judging from the excclent programme. Several persons tried hard to get a quorum of the city dads out last Thursday evening to talk up the Forth of July celebration, but it was no eo. And still again Friday night with the same result, Not quite enough patriotism for the Cen tennial year.
