A Hutchinson belle snores in three lan guages. h.x. That's nothing. We knew a girl in New York who could chew gum in seven different languages, with her eyes shut. There are not enough breaking teams in the field, to do the work required in Harvey county.

If parties in the Eastern part of the State have teams to spare, they can get all the work here that they can do from this time until the wheat crop is in the ground this fall. 3Ir. Robt. Hardiman, of Wichita, made himself happy in Newton last Sunday. Jeff Grant hasDG acres of barley grow ing, and it is in splendid condition.

E. Stevens, traveling correspondent of the Leavenworth Times, paid us a visit, 3Ionday. We have received the following rom Lakin township. The report is very gratifying, and will be read with interest: 16,300 acres of land valued for taxes, at personal property, Jfj.uGl. Total $54,084.

Improved land, 1st 3Iarch, 2,555 acres; winter wheat, 1188 acres; rye 78; spring wheat 15; corn 731; barley 23; oatsG12; potatoes 32; sorghum millet 1G; wool 2,800 apple trees 893; peach trees cherry trees 1 iii. Wheat average over last year, is 20 per cent also 20 per cent better. Rye, decrease, acreage 50 per cent. Spring wheat, decrease, below par. Oats good.

C. A. Tracy, Assessor Lakin tp. The following is the floweiy and eloquent manner in which Judge Callahan describes our beautiful Stale. "Now is the time to see glorious Kan sas in all her beauty.

Tii trees are covered with blossoms, and the young prairie grass rivals the emerald, whilst the new wheat, fifteen inches high in many counties, waves to the breezes and proclaims the richness of the soil. One can walk for miles, and weary not a whit. Adown cither bank of tlio limped Kaw, where the maple branches roof the meandering paths, and the pretty modest wild flowers already peep forth, and the reckless vines stealthily creep up the old oaks.and the small runlets rolicking over the stones.and the little spots of sunshine dispel the chill of the dark grottoes.and the sweep of tho undulating prairie is seen in the distance. Oh! such sights are rare, but not in Kansas. Not the favored Audalusia, nor the fields of the Arcadia, nor the wealth of Italian suns, can compare with the ravishing scenery and mild beauty of luscious Kansas, as it la3rs in sleepy peace before me now.

Tho more one views this scenic display of nature's architecture, the more ardent becomes tho desire to enjoy it longer. AVith many pleasures we become satiated, but never with the boundless play of clear cut hills and sweeping prairie, and floating waters, and clumps of trees, and grass and flowers that every where salute tho C3re, in this fairy land of Kansas." Democratic State Convention. The Democratic State Convention perfec ted its organization Tuesday IS inst by the election of the following officers; President Judge Amos Harris, of Sedgwick. Vice Presidents-Matthew Quigg, of Atchison, John Boyd, of Montgomery, Frank Davis, of Greenwood. Secretaries W.

II. Rossington, of Shawnee, Thomas Hcnshall, of Doniphan, Matthew Quigg, Atchison. 003 delegates were reported entitled to seats, aud were present. Tho following is the Platform adopted: Deemincr it not inappropriate upon the eve of the approaching Democratic National Convention, that the Democracy of Kansas should define its position upon the financial question of the day, we do hereby resolve. 1st.

That we are opposed to the banks of issue, whether chartered by Congress or the State Legislatures, and we desire that banking on the part of corporations or private individuals shall be confined by law exclusively to exchange" dis count and deposit. 2nd. we demand tnat tne act or congress creating the National banking system be repealed: that the Notes of the National bank be withdrawn from circulation, and in lieu thereof, the paper of the ixovernment of the United States be substituted. 3rd. That as Congress has the sole power to coin Money, and to regnlate the value thereof, that it should also have the sole power to provide a paper currency for the people.

4th. That such nancr currency be made a le- Rral tender in the payments of debts, public and private, and tnat tne same oc receivaoie lor an demands for the government, includcing duties on imports. 5th. That we regard the act of Congress requiring the resumption of specie payments in 1879, the retirement of legal tenders and the substitution of the inferior currency of the National currency in its stead, is a fraud and an outrage, and we demand that the Democratic House of Representatives in Congress immediately pass a bill for its unconditional repeal, and that the responsibility for the continuance of that infamous measure on the etatnte book be thrown on the Senate and President. Cth.

That Thomas A BTcndricks, of Indiana, is the first choice of the Democrats of the State of Kansas for President of the United States, and that our delegates to the National Convention be and they arc hereby instructed ta support no man for "President or Vice-President who does not fully endorse our financial resolutions. After the adoption of the platform the following delegates to the National convention were elected; At large Wilson Shannon, XV Blair, XV Taylor and Eaton. Alternates Frank Sanford. Strosnider, Powers and 31 Goddard First District Palmer, Lowe, alternates. ilorris.

Railroad boys who accompanied the Directors' party west, last week, desire to express through the News, their appreciation of the elegant and sumptuous manner in which they were entertained by Messrs. G. road, for many courtesies received. The Santa Fe boys say they had a splendid time in Colorado. Owing to the large number of new Sub scribers recently added to our list, we ran short of copies of last week's issue. If those who failed to receive their paper will forgive us this time, we will keep a closer watch hereafter and print enough copies so that none will be deprived of the luxury of perusing the Harvey County News.

Recollect that there will be services held at the school house Sunday morning at 10:30. Rev. 3Ir. Overstreet will nreach. The directors of the Santa Fe road re turned from their western tour Thursday last, and were pleased with the condition and business of the road.

The road could scarcely be other than in good condition with such able and efficient officers. Cherokee, Kansas, 3Iay 18, 1870. Castello's Circus exhibited in Newton yesterday, and notwithstanding the stormy weather gave a ring performance that beat Cooper, Bailey Co's show to death. There were no "agents" in this circus to walk over and bore the audience, selling song books, peanuts, and other trash. We like this circus for another reason. The first thing the treasurer did after arriving in town was to walk up like a little man and pay the printing bills, and this in the face of what every one supposed would be a poor day. Our exchanges will please take note.

The office of the Planters House looks very nice since it was renovated, kalsouiin- ed, painted, grained, etc. Wc walked in the other day and at first thought we were iu the lobby of the Grand Pacific of Chicago, but 3Ir. Love assured us it was only the old Planters office warmed over. JosEni 3Iedill, of the Chicago Tribune, who owns land in Kansas, says: "I am pretty confident that it is going to advance $1 per acre per annum hereafter for the next 21 years, or perhaps a good deal more than that." A Georgia jury thought they were do ing a smart thing when they bro't in the verdict; "We, the jury, unanimously agree to disagre They didn't think it was so smart when the Judge responded as the Judge unanimously line you each." This reminds us of another story wc once heard about a Georgia jury.

A man named Smilh shot and seriously wounded man with whom he had some alterca tion. The jury in the case after being 'out" all night, brought in a verdict in the morning of "guilty ot arson in the third degree and may God have mercy on his soul." Don't fail to read the letter from Harvey County, and the article on Secretary Bris-tow, clipped from the San Francisco Chronicle, In another column. There is a prominent candidate for Govenor on the Democratic ticket by the name of Vest. If his opponents cannot pull him down, they might succeed in making him wipe of his chin. H.

The intention is to have an addition to the school building, to make in all seven rooms, in order that there may be a full graded school.

As soon as the robbers bad secured their booty, which is reported to have amounted to $7,000, they shot their own horses, mounted the best ones belonging to the stages and rode off toward the Indian Nation. From the description given, it is supposed that they wereuhe same who recently captured the San Antonio stages. Later news from Fort Worth says that information just received states that ten men were in pursuit of the robbers and only ten minutes behind them this morning on Graplaine prairie. From the description given it is supposed they are the Janies brothers. The entire county 13 aroused and their capture is considered certain.
