Usieoiirteeusi Slignoarl. It is painful to be obliged to nte the general discourtesy which the Governor of this Sta( 1 received at the hands of the Missourians on the occasion of tbe late reception General Grant at Kanses and at Merriam Park in Kansas! Tbe opportunity' was one which sJiould have called forth the utmost unanimity of feeling between" both the States, and it is' a' matter of more than ordinary regret that Missouri should far tiave forgotten what was due her evwn dignity 'as well as to that of her neighbor and peer, the Commonwealth of Kansas. It matters not what the people of Missouri-may think of John P. St. John as an individual or whether they may command or disapprove of his personal career'.

Ou such anJloc-casion the individual is entirely merged in: the official, and Missourians must not suppose that they will be permitted by the citizens of Kansas to offer indignity to their Chief Executive witb Impunity. ii It 1 llv -II 1 '5 Hi, i ii it mt III. There have been some minuet par ties here, where pretty girls put them selves into the prettiest new-fashioned old-fashioned clothes they could muster, and moved through the stately old with what comfort they conld. on their tortnr iug littlf high heels set- in the middle of their By the way, now that I am on the subject of these wicked heels, I want to tell, a story that ousht to secure every one of those pretty little einneri out. of her insane laucj. iiibbiki jim iwiu me by one of these girls, who had a foot small enough not to be tempted into French-heel folly. One ol our companions, however, not so wise.

went one day to an oculist with trouble with her eyes that threaten ed all manner at frightful 'results She was already in a state where readine: was out of the question, aud other entertainments were fastbeeom ing a torment. 'l can walk' and ride aud drive, and do anything with my strength; if it wasn't- that my eyes were in such condition I could enjoy so much, and now I can. enjoy nothing," was her worul The oculist looked at her with his professional wisdom, asked her vari ous questions, then suddenly amazed her by asking her to put out her- foot. This sounded like the most extraordinary request. Had the good doctor lost his wits? and.

thinking something of this kind, the foot' in its smart kid boot with the wicked tall little heel, the young -lady was so proud of, was thrust forth. The doctor eyed it a moment with a etolfd fact, then "Go he take off those heels keep them off for a month, and then come to me again, and we'll see kow the eyes In a mouth the eyes were well, and the young lady learned by her experience and a little wise talk bow near she had come to having no eyes at all. It may not follow that all young women equally de voted to wicked heels will be affected in a like -manner, but it serves to show -that there is a possibility, and always certainty, that with that instrument of torture constantly at work in the centre or the foot, where all those delicate nerves and tendons lie that are so intimately connected with all the. other delicate nerves of the body, there must presently come some disarrangement or disease that may work fatal mischief with the health, arid, consequently, with tbe enjoyment and good looks of the wearer. Disposing; of Frcncji Crown Jewels. Mr. Turquet has laid the following nroiect before the Minister Finance and the Budget Committee relative to the rich collection or pre cious stones known under the official title of "Diamants de la Couronne." The Under-Secretary ot Fine Arts proposes to divide this treasure into three parts. The first part will com prise the historic jewels and stones, and will be placed in the Louvre, The second part will contain stones having a iniueralogical value, and will be placed in the Museum of the Ecole des Mines. third part, composed of the Royal an'd Imperial lewelry, and having only a material value, will be put up at auction and sold to the highest bidder, and the proceeds will go to form a State fine- art land.

xurquet has ban an in ventory made of this- princely treas ure. One of the most famous of the diamonds is the one called Regent. It weighs 136 carats, is of an extreme whiteness and brilliancy, is square in form, and was estimated at 12,000,000 francs in 1791, Another remarkable object is. a round pearl weighing oyer 27. carats and valued at- 200,000 and still another is a neck lace of pearls styled Collier de Reine composed of 25 and worth 995,700 of our lady rea ders would, we are sure, disdain tbe large, long, clear ruby in this collec tion, weighing 56 carats, and valued at 57.000 francs; nor tbe amethyst of more than -13 carats, estimated at 6.000 francs; nor the saphire of 132 carats, worth 100,000 francs.

By sell ling the jewels of the third class Mr. turquet expect to realize the sum of 3,090,600 ranes, and with it he will purchase works of art and enrich the national museums, Opposition -newspapers are prone to believe campaign charges against Presidential candidates; but they carry credulity too far when they take the testimony of avowed cor-ruptionists and shady lobbyists as better than that of a statesman, a scholar, or 'a gentleman. They ought at least to let the word of a good: man in his own defence go for as much as the unsupported testi mony of a single dubious witness against him. Corruptionists always have a motive for proten iing that they have corrupted somebody. That is their business.

They are in Washington forthat purpose. To account for the sums of mosey which mysteriously slip through their fingers, and to keep up a reputation as men of great' they must point to this great man or that as being completely in their toils. Any boast of the kind they make is meant tor proor of their own fidelity and zeal. When Mr. Oakes Ames testifies to his great success in securing Congressmen, or Count Fosco declares that he has "fixed the per son whose hnger is on the pdrse- string of tbe JMation, wise men knew their words must be taken with sev eral grains of salt.

It is safe to put away dt future reference the self congratulatory telegrams and letters of political cracksmen, who are avowedly in Washington for the purpose of purchasing a portion of the public funds. The work they pretend to do. and the "infloonce" they. say they seldom corres pond with the result of their long and expensive labors, or satisfy their anxious principals; Chicago Tribune. A sea unicorn recently caught and stuffed near Cape Sagami, now on exhibition in San Francisco, is thus described: 'bj tr- The body is of the size of a small deer "and covered with scales about an 'inch in diameter, tufts of reddish-brown hair 'growing quite plentifully between" the scales. Its legs are quite slender, and have long hair abaut the hoofs, which resemble those of a 'deer or goat. The tail Is straight and tuft ed, like that of a cow, while the snout is Tenlarged at the end like that of a swine, and the mouth shows formidable tusks protruding on either.side. From'the center of the face protrudes a single horn, not more than six: inches in diameter, which carves upward slightly. And in all probability, the rule will be granted.

A decidedly lt good "haur' was made by the" government detectives last week in the arreat of eight counterfeiters who had been carrying on their nefarious work in tiit neighborhood of the Pennsylvania Oil region for 'some time past. The of ficers have-been cautiously working up the case for weeks, and having at length secured abundance of evi dence, completed their work by seizing the whole gang and lodging them eventually in the jail at Erie; where they now are. A. National Ie dealers Convention. It is almost a foregene conclusion that there will be a National ice dealers convention sometime in August. Some at the leading ice merchants in Indfana, Iowa, Kentucky, Maine, Massachusetts, Michigan, Ma ryland, Miunesote, New orkj Ohio, Pennsylvania, Tennes see, West Virginia, Wisconsin and District of Columbia are in sympathy with' the movement. They have au thorized tbe.

use of their names in calling such convention in Chieago, 111., in August. ilt has been suggested that the con vention be called about the time of "Knlgut Templars Triennial Con clave, which takes place in Chicago on the 17th and 18lh of August. We clip the following from the New York. Herald of the 2d inst: The Society for the Encouragement of Moderation in Drinking has done a graceful and useful act by placing a free ice water fountain at the Office, and the promise that similar sources of refreshment may be placed at. other points of the city will be hailed with delight by all people but" barkeepers, It is to be however, that the society's fundamental principle ot moderation will govern the quantity of ice to be used, for very cold wafer in very hot weather is about as dangerous to the system as stronger drinks that are not so cold.
