Toodle3' Wheelbarrow And the Eeason3 Why. When a certain Commissary General eon-plaiaed to the Duke of Wellington that Sir Thomas Pieton had declared he would hang him if the rations for that General' division were not forthcoming at a certain hour, the Duke replied: "Ah! did he indeed go so far as fhat? Did he say he'd hang "Yes, my lord "Well. Ge eral Picton is just the man to keep his word. You'd better get the rations up in time." But to get rations or anything else up In time one must know when to lay his hand on them. As Mr.

Toodles said about the coffin which he had bought at auction and brought home lor his wife: 'If anything should happen, my dear, it will be so handy to have in the house." Being'in the great wholesale drug house of Wm. Hart, in Elgin, 111., one day, Mr. G. H. Shei-man, the photographer of that place, remarked, concerning PARKER'S TONIC, "I have used it in my family for two years, and I unhesitatingly pronounce it the best'medicine we have ever used.

I cis handy to have in the house, and we are never without it. Culled from the mass of reasons why Mr. Sherman was rieht, be good enough to consider these: First, PARKER'S TONIC is delicious to the palate; second, it in, igorates but does not create a love forstrong drink third, it cures coughs and colds by inciting the torpid organs into healthy action, and opening all the pores of the skin; fourth, it purines the blood, thus curing Kidney, Liver and Lung diseases and Rheumatism; fifth but take it into your house and it will speak for itself. Once used, you will change it for nothing else. Physicians commend it.

Burlington Independent John Geisy is one of the forehanded farmers of Avon, and informs us this year he raised 4,000 bushels of good averaging 50 bushels per acre. He is feeding all the corn raised by himself, and has purchased 6,000 bushels besides, for feeding, paying 25 cents. He has 700 head of fine sheep, and is'feeding 125 head of steers, and we might add, owns one of the best cultivated farms in Avon township.

Clay Center Times: The onion crop, although a large one in this county, did not pan out to suit" the boys who devoted a summer's work to their cultivation. The market price is too low to cover the expense of raising them. Kirwin Chief: Some of the farmers are planting corn. They say they can raise more, and better corn to plant in the fall, than in the spring. If this experiment should prove successful, it will revolutionize the former methods of farming.

The state Grange met in Manhattan Dec. 11th, with a numerous attendance. On Tuesday evening there was a reception at Grange Hall, Wednesday was spent at the Agricultural college and in the evening a lecture was delivered by H. Eshbaugh, Grand Master of the State Grange of Missouri. Burr Oak Reveille: Considering the amount of sorghum cane grown and manufactured into syrup in this county during the past few years, we believe that a sorghum sugar mannfactory is one of the pressing needs of this part of the country during the coming year, and Burr Oak is just the place for such an enterprise.

Moline Free Press: R. S. Parker, whose farm joins the townsite on the north, has just finished gathering corn, and on 110 acres the yield was 6,000 bushels of shelled corn, or a fraction over 54 bushels per acre for the entire yield. This field has been cropped continuously for about ten years has never been enriched by any" fertilizer, not even from the barn, and would be frightened by the sight of the hoe, and these remarks apply equally well to almost all Kansas grain fields. An International Uogues' Gallery.

The Berlin police authorities possess an almost complete collection of photographs of living German murderers, forgers, thieves, bigamists, and criminals generally, and have found it so useful that they have now decided to make a collection of the scoundrels of other countries. They have therefore communicated with the detective department at Scotland-yard, the central police office in New York, and the bureau of police in Paris, and have begged to be favored with the likenesses of all persons who shall be henceforward convicted of serious crimes in England, the United States and France. They have also asked to be supplied with information as to the aliases, handwriting and characteristics of every criminal; and have offered in return to send photographs and descriptions of the convicts in Germany. An international ortniit gallery of this kind would be of considerable use, and not wholly devoid of interest to anthropologists and phrenologists if any of the latter are left nowadays. St.

A Western lady states, as her experience as a poultry raiser, that one bushel of corn, or its equivalent in corn mixed with other foods, will produce fourteen pounds of poultry in the form of growing cockerels.

At the same time it must be borne in mind that something in addition to corn must be used as tood. Confine a towl in a yard with no other food than corn, and, as all the wants of the fowl's system would not be supplied, "it would soon die of starvation in the midst of plenty. Tribune and Farmer. Delos Lyon, of Chenango county, New York, relates his experience in putting in wheat and buckwheat in a letter to the Country Gentleman as follows: have been engaged in farming over thirtv years, and I am satisfied that buckwheat is not injurious to wheat, oats or seeding. I have raised large fields of buckwheat with the best results to the crops following.

C. Van Buren, of Laurens. a man who is too well known for farther comment, told me of one field that has been sowed to buckwheat for several years in succession, until the land would not produce that crop, and then he seeded it, with the best results." Artichokes have been grown for swine several years at the Michigan Agricultural college. The method of management lias been to have a small patch of the artichokes convenient to the swine pens, upon wiich the breeding sows were turned early in the spring and allowed to harvest the roots for themselves. The crop is thus grown with very little labor, since it requires no harvesting, the roots remaining in the ground all winter, and it furnishes succulent food for the sows just when it is most needed and most difficult to obtain from other sources.

Professor Johnson, farm Superintendent, is so well pleased with the results of this management that he is enlarging the artichoke plantation. The Swiss cow is large bodied, but fine boned, of the style of the shorthorn the horns are light, short, clar, and tipped with black the color is chestnut brown, mixed with white the nose, tongue, hoofs and switch are black a mealy-col ored band surrounds the black nose the udder and teats are large and well form ed, and while they differ to a great ex tent from our common notions about the form which a cow should have, yet they are excellent and profitable cows, yielding twenty to twenty-five quarts of milk daily, and the milk is rich in butter of an excellent quality. The skin is yellow, soft, elastic andcovered with soft hair; they carry remarkable escutcheons and are extremely even in appearance, show ing careful and good breeding, for a con siderable length of time. A mixture which is excellent for removing grease spots and stains from carpets and clothing is made of two ounces ol ammonia, two ounces wor castue soap, one ounce ot glycerine, one ounce ot ether; cut the soap fine dissolve in one pint of water over the lire; two quarts of water. This should be mixed with water in the proixtrtion of a tea- cupful to one ordinary-sized pail of water.

Mix thoroughly, and wash soiled garments in it. For removing spots use a sponge or clean llanuel cloth, and with a dry cloth rub as drv as possible. Wool en goods may be made to look bright and fresh by being sponged with this. Hickory-nut Cake. One-half cup of butter, two cups ot sugar and lour eggs, beaten separately, three cups of flour, one-half cup of sweet milk, two teaspoon-fuls of baking powder, two cups of hick-orynut meats minced, one teaspoonful extrac of vanilla.

Ginger Cookies. One cup molasses, one egg, one-half cup brown sugar, one-half cup butter, one teaspoonful soda, tablespoonful ginger, flour to roll. Ginger Snaps. One full cup of shortening, two cups brown sugar, two of molasses; boil together a short time, and then let cool. Sift four cups of flour with one-half tablespoonful of cinnamon, one tablespoonful of all-spice, two of ginger, one nutmeg, last of all, one teaspoonful of soda, dissolved in hot water; then let cool.

It is better to use one part butter. Make in small rolls with the hand, then cut in pieces the size of a hickory nut, giving them plenty of room in the pans to spread. Bake in'a moderate oven. Let them cool before taking them out of the pans. The New England Farmer thinks it would be next to impossible for the members of a farmers' club to engage in a law suit with each other.

The habit acquired at the club meetings of looking on all sides of a question, the courteous methods acquired in debate, the ready submission to organized authority, the cultivation of social feelings, all exert an influence upon members which can but make each feel charitable and friendly toward all. Chewing bones, lapping barn boards, eating old leather, whips, boots, woolen clothing, and the manure from grain-fed horses, are all indications that the cows want something that they do not find in their regular food, or else that they have lost their appetite and have a constant craving or an abnormal condition of the digestive organs. A perfectly healthy cow will be fully satisfied with healthful food, such as grass or hay. New England Fanner. The Farm and Garden learns from a correspondent that the best method of storing sweet potatoes is to cover the bottom oT a box or barrel with dust to the depth of three inches, ond pn this place a layer of potatoes so that they do not touch each other.

Then cover with dust, add another layer of potatoes and dust, and so continue till the receptacle is rilled. Many experiments have been tried by the writer, and he selected this mode a3 the best. To Dye Dark Brown. For five pounds of goods, take one pound of camwood and boil it fifteen minutes then put the goods in it, and allow it to stand three- quarters of an hour, lake the goods out of this, and add to the dye two and a half pounds of fustic boil ten minutes put the goods in it, and let them stand three-quarters of an hour. Then take the goods out again, addding one ounce of blue vitriol and four ounces of copperas.

Then put the goods back again, and let it stand half an hour. If" not found dark enough, add more copperas. Old Leather Bags, the leather seats of dining-room chairs, the leather cover of the library table, and any other dingy looking leather things that you have become tired of beholding in their rustiness, can be restored to their pristine freshness by an application of good blacking, a subsequent brushing, a very slight oiling, and an after-dressing of gum tragacanth. You will be surprised and delighted with the result. KANSAS Ji AKMlSCi.
