Dear Semtinkl: The readers of the Sentinel in Labette county, generally speaking, aro well aware of the inconvenience that the first settlers of a newr countv liaveto contend with. As a general thing we do not know of what is going on in the outside world, and in one sense of tho word there is no other place than this; and while wo receive no mails, wo are also, compelled to hunt chances for sendinc word, once In a while, to the living, that we aro btill numbered with them, and in good hopes of soon gaining easier and iastcr communi cation with them. We have had quite a cold spell with some snow, but again the sun shines forth with its goldon rava and makes one leel as tnougn it instead of Christmas, but the surveying of our lands hav ing only been coinnienced, and not yet having seen 1371, we confess it must be Christmas. Ve look out from our door-step and behold a narrow but beautiful valley with rich soil and some seat- On eacn side ol the valley is a rocky bluff, and by going a few rods beyond the top of the bluff vre find rich upland prairie, to which wo have not seen the end. Although there are many settled on these prairieB, still there is an abundance yet unsettled, and good op portunities be had here for those who are seeking homes.

There is plenty of timber along the Cana nvi-r, for all purposes. Mr. Hart, the well known honest miller of tho Labette mill, has a water-power saw mill at work here, and is selling lumber cheap for cash or its equivalent, rating from 1.50 to S2.50 per hundred feet. He also will have a flouring mill in operation by next fall, and all that pertains to a good ami complete grist mill. A town has also sprung up at what is generally known as Cana Falls.

Buildings are going up, and stores are being established, and everything goes on prosperously. The government surveyors havo surveyed some, here, and are at work surveying this county. The settlers are making preparations for large improvements tho coming 'vear. and summer prairieswill be made into larms, and orchards will tc set out throughout the coun try. This coming spring our friend Peter Mouriquand, formerly of Labette, will furnish the people of Howard county with all kinds of truit trees, vines, and everything that can bo found in a well conducted nursery.

He informs us that he will establish a nursery here and will supply the demand for the present from the Clinton nursery, one of the best nurseries the south- west Mechanics are! coming in the country and settling in our midst, and all kinds of industry seem to prosper and tell U3 that the day of civilization is at hand. The beautiful valley and upland prairies, the timbered hills and the elevated bluffs, that one year ago. were desolate, are now almost all pointing forth to civilization. School houses are already being built, religious societies organized, and faster and faster the tide emurraiion 19 coming and settle ments are made all around U3. And now that tho survey is.
