Council met in regular set sion. Present: Councilmen Schweitzer, Hayes. Watts, Alexander, Kvans, March, Morn, 6 nearer, KidemUler, White and the Mayor. The Mayor stated the special order for this evening to be the Ordinance regulating: the ale of Intoxicating liquors," which waa accordingly taken up, read the third time and placed upon ite passage.

Watts, Shearer and Schweitzer voted "No." There not being a majority of all the Councilmen el est voting in the affirmative, the bill was declared rejecte. A petition of the Street Hallway Company asking that streets be graded along the line of rvad they were about to build waa presented, and, on motion, granted A petition or Laptad, Harbingh and 21 other for tldewalka on Bridge street was presented, and, on motion, referred to the committee on streets, alleys and bridgea A petition of C. J. Lewis asking that certain docket books of the police court be returned to his office, was prevented, and, on motion, granted.

A petition of 8. W. Johnston askinc that the sidewalk on Vermont atreet in front of the Lawrence House be put down to the grade, was presented, and, on motion, referred to the committee oa street, alleys and bridges. A petition of Mrs. N.

A. O. Lei bey and others asking permission to raise the sidewalk on the east aide of Vermont street between Henry and Wintbrop streets and place it 10 feet from the west line of lots, was presented; and, on motion, granted. The committee on market bouse and city properly reported having reeeiTed 89 for rent or room in market boose in Fifth ward front Mr. Petty, and there remains due on said room rent Jroaa Mit 19th to date at 85 per month, which report Some fifteen carriages were In the funei) procession, which were occupied prinef-pally by English persons.

Coleman. From the American Desert. We were shown a letter written to our friend, Captain Christian, from an old Kansan, Prof. Samuel Newhall, now at Fost McPherson, Nebraska, In which he says that the coun try around the tart looks first-rate and is well adapted for raising cattle, but that there are no crops. He also states that there has been more rain in that country this summer than usual, so that the grass and flower are up and looking splendidly.

Wild currants, cherry and plum trees and grape vines "are everywhere abundant and loaded with fruit. With more rain, which be believes will surely come as the country gets more thickly settled, the 'Great Ameiican Desert" will yet the best grazing and fruit land in the world.
