Thanking the Public fort heir patronage aod hop- proper course and is bound to be patronized by an appreciative public. Af ter disposing of his business last spring ho went into contracts for building, since which tLme be has kept from fif teen to- thirty mechanics constantly em ployed; and the amount of work that ho has successfully done is truly astonishing. Flo ha.3 again embarked his old business, the bouse furnishing trade, on his own hook, at tho old stand, opposite tho post-office, where those of our people desiring anything in the line of articles enumerated in his advertisement can get it at living rates.

Success toJSkelt. Smith. A run over to Carbondale and the coal mines, the other day, disclosed to us the fact that important improvements are on the tapis. Two or three new buildings are going up in the town while up at the mines proper quite a little town has suddenly sprung into existence. Several new banks or entries wore being opened up, also.

From these facts together with the fact that eight cars, loaded with three hundred bushels of coal each, stood on the side track, ready for shipment, we came to the conclusion that a much heavier corps of minors has been engaged on tho works. Tho Railroad Corapany had quite a large force at work extend ing the road further up into tho mines. When Osage County gets to runing out six or eight hundred tons of coal daily our people will begin to realize tho im portance of, and the. wealth that lies ia our coal beds. About four hundred and fifty dollars worth of coal is now being transferred from those minc3 to Topeka and tho Pacific Idailroad, yet that amount is only a drop in tho bucket as compared to that which will be taken out daily in two or three years hence.

The time is close at hand when it will be demonstrated whether this paper was flighty in its prognostications of five and six years ago, that the coal in Osage county would stimulate and develop one of tho largest manufacturing interests and towns within onr border, to be found in the State, or not. We have but to glance at the papers of Kansas to 6ee of what importance the question cf "fuel," has grown to be. We have it at our doors; others must rvi if Affti lirtaa rf i fioarnf 1 a flf? cult or lengthy to a greater or lens extent. Col. Blood, in a conversation tho other day, told us that the difference of fuel for runing a single engine in Lawrence and Burlingamo was as much as ten dollars, in our favor.

That item alone would aggregate no mean income. Then how important to a manufactu ring town whero hundreds of engines would be employed. A new mail route is very much needed up tho Marai3 des Cj-gnos Taller, its entire length from Ottawa or the Agency to Emporia. This route would supply new offices at the mouth of Rook Creek, Long Creek, Olivet and Arvonia, and at least two thousand people with mail facilities who now are destitute in th it particular. The route would not necessarily be more than thirty miles in length.
