To the Editor of the Monitor If there is one thing that we love to see more than an other in this world, it is the American people.ln mass meeting assembled, from the farm, from the shone, from the mines, from the manufactories and from their places of -business and uniting without care of the present or solicitude of the future in one grand admiration of the day that gave them their liberties.

Such was our pleasure yesterday at Joplin City. This wonderful town, but a trifle more than one year old, waa the scene of one of the grandest and most successful celebrations I ever had the pleasure of witnessing. At early morn the business houses were decorated with banners, lutes were fired, bands of music were; playing our national airs. Wagons, hacks and stages at an early hour commenced pouring in' to the town from every direction, until travelling in our streets, even for a footman, was almost impos sible. Precisely at 9 o'clock the pro cession was formed by Col.

Brezeal and his assistants.and headed by the BaxterSprings Silver Cornet Band, the Immense multitude started for the grove on Shoal Creek, at Grand Falls. This place was selected for the celebration on account of its grand picturesque scenery and its abun dance of fine springs. It is located on Shoal Creek about five miles from Joplin City. The water has a perpendicular fall of about twenty feet; the lofty bluff on either side, covered with beautiful verdure, makes it a place of surpassing beauty. Precisely at 11 o'clock President Jesse Shortes, of Joplin City, call ed tne meeting to order and in a few well timed remarks stated the object of the meeting.

Alter music by the Dand an ap propriate prayer was offered by Rev. J. Wesley Johnson, of Neo sho the Declaration of Independence was read by G. D. Jackson, of Joplin which the band stracK up that good old air, Hall Columbia." After the music an oration was delivered by J.

Wesley Johnson, of and we are sorry that time and space prevents us from giving at least a suyoptis of it. SufUce to say it was a brilliant effort, full of sublime thoughts and sentiments suggestive of the occasion. After more music the President adjourned the exercises for one hour to give the multitude an opportunity for a grand picnic dinner, which was decidedly one of the great successes of the day. It a sublime spectacle to see an area of at least- a mile square literally alive with people, occupying every grassy or shady spot to spread their oounuiui repast. Messrs.

Corn Thompson, who had been active in getting up this ctle brat ion, had closed their store, furnace and places of business, ana with a lioeral hand which cnarac- serize these gentlemen in all their acts, had provided a free dinner for all their employees, and such a one in variety and rienness as would do honor to a first-class hotel In St. Louis or Chicago. After dinner the crowd again as sembled at the speaker's stand where we enjoyed short and stirring speeches from Messrs. Thompson, Ballard and Freeman, of Joplin Baxter Springs, and Mr. Cahn.

of Neosho. The speeches were received with great applause by the audience, and all seemed well pleased with all that was said. One thing we noticed whicn we tnougnt somewnat re markable, that during the speaking and throughout the entire day we did not hear the names of either Grant or Greeley, Democracy, Re publican or Liberal mentioned. About 3 o'cjock me speaaing beincr ended, the exercises were closed at the stand to give the peo ple an opportunity or ramming in the grove, nsning and social enjoy ment. Darkness had serenely spread her gentle curtain over our young and glorious city, when the band com' menced playing from the brow of the hill on the Murphysburg side of Joplin creek and the soul stirring music rang out upon tne son air oi evening, the immense crowd com menced assembling on the hill side, on either side of the creek, to see the display of fireworks.

At 10 in the evening toe youth and beauty or our community as sembled in Mr. S. B. Corn's new store building, which is a very large room, 24x80, for the purpose of trip ping tne light fantastic toe. Tots part of the exercises was also a grand 8UCCC8S.

Thus ended the firdt 4th of July celebration at Joplin City, tne suc cess of which was as great and sur prising to ail spectators as the his tory of the city has been marvelous to the world. One year ago to-day where Joplin City now stands, a single nouse maraed the spot, wnere now a thousand houses and four thousand inhabitants are assembled. Then one or two hundred dollars of capi tal per week, would purchase all the mineral taken from these mines now ten to twelve thousand dollars per week fall to supply the demand. Then one poor air furnace would do all the smelting required, but now nine, constructed on the most improved plans are not able to smelt over half the mineral taken out. Then a small stock or merchandise of six or eight hundred dollars would supply the trade now heavy houses, carrying stocks of twenty or twenty-five thousand dollars are doing a large business.

At present there are over a quarter oi a million pounds or mineral ex cavated from these mines per week and tne amount is increasing every month, thus establishing beyond a reasonaoie aouDS tne future per manency oi inese mines. or tne de velopment or this immense wealth and the growth of this wonderful city of the Southwest, we are indebted largely to the energies and enterprise or Messrs. This is what the stage and horse car companies, livery stable keepers, members of the turf, and all grooms and trainers say of the Mustang Liniment. They ''can't do without it." And why? Because infallibly reduces the external swellings, which, under various names, impair the usefulness and value of the king of quadrupeds, and also because, for galls and other injuries to which horse-flesh Is liable, it is the most trustworthy preparation in tbe market. Yet these recommendations comprise only a portion of its claim to public confidence. During period of more than sixteen years, it has been recognized as a specific for many of the most agonizing dis orders which afflict the human family such as rheumatism, gout, neuralgia, lumbago, tic-doloreux, sore throat, earache, toothache, and likewise as a peerless application for cuts, bruises, burns and scalds.

The news was received with a considerable show of enthusiasm. The "Liberals." of course, were jubilant, and the Democrats, who had been so long in a "passive" state, were glad of an opportunity tooDen their restrained reservoirs of enthusiasm and hurrah for any thing or anybody. Quite a crowd collected at the Wilder House corner the grand congregating centre on all occasions of spontaneous gatherings and during the entire afternoon the po litical "situation" was the theme of discussion.

Of course the White Hats were largely in the majority, and Inflated by the favorable view they were disposed to take of the news that had Just flashed across the wires their imaginations clutch ed victory already, and all the States, including the as good as "carried for the Sage of Chappaqua. A large national flag was suspen ded over the street between the Wilder House and Drake's block, an ensign that no one could object to. no matter on which side of the present struggle they are enlisted. The Joss gun was brought In to requisition and placed in battery at the intersection of Main and Wall streets. For two or three hours It belched forth volleys of blank cartridges and gunny sack wads, and if it did not carry terror to the hearts of the Grant men, it was certainly effective la ing the glass in half the windows in the neighborhood.

The fusilade of talk and powder was kept up all the afternoon, and some ratner excited controversies grew out of the intense state of feeling wrought up by the mutual efforts of the politicians In behalf of their champions. During this heated demonstra tion at Fort Scott the Sage was un doubtedly industriously laying low" the eiant hemlocks of Chappaqua with his sharpest axe. and Grant, at Long Branch, coolly "kept right on smoking" his fa vorite brand of cigars.
