Tidninff (or Svenskarne i Topeka och Kansas Published by the Norden Publishing Co. The Best Advertising Medium to Reach the Swedish People of Topeka 6. Artf. I. Topeka, Kansas, Fredagen den 27 juni, 1918.

Extract of speech delivered bv E. II. Helm at Wage City. perfecting of wauling of into the life, found trials and strifi Owing to unavoidable circumstances, the social affair to be staged by the members of the Blue! Team could not be held on the 2'U'd as originally planned. Wc wish lo cherish the remembrance of the Campaign which ha1- added a most enviable page lo Norden's already interesting history, and by the postponement of Ihis little "treat" we will be enabled lo look forward lo something which is a direct result of the campaign.

The Blues have no Intentions, whatever, of "craw fishing' land promise a most intresting "stunt" in the very near future. Messrs. E.G.Ekblad and Jno W. Nygren were the joint winners Of the prize which was put up for the individual securing the greatest number of new members during the Each of these gentlemen secured iive new members a pretty good record, to say the least. So if you money and Millions of lives.

We worship this, our country as much as any people who now enjoy its blessing and will die for it, if need be, but with all this, we love and respeel the father and mother laud. Land of our fathers, adorable home. For whom our warmest wish to Heaven is sent. Our thoughts lo love for thee, where'er we roam Are constant, though here our lives are spent. "Breathes there a man with soul so dead, Who never to himself hath said Oh, My own, my native land! Whose heart hath ne'er within him burned As home his footsteps he hath turned From wandering on a foreign si rand." The Swedes in Kansas and in America are numerous enough, if united, to determine the election in this stale and in many others.

We are free, independent American citizens, obeying and creating laws, as necessity requires. We have been faithful, in the past, but party leaders as 1 have stated, have not at all limes been faithful to their pre-election promises, with expectation of (heir fiillfillnienls, only to meet with disappointment. Will) this experience we have learned wisdom and plainly see that our weakness lav in our ununited strength. There are over 75,000 Swedes and Norwegians in Kansas, were they in united organi Our Scandinavian race have contributed most extensively in the discovery, habitation and development of this continent, and they have rendered a disling-uished and heroic part in the development and maintainance of Our cherished and dearly he-loved Republic. II is fiow a Conceded historical fact, that a Swede.

Gardar Svn-f arson and his compatriots were the primitive discoverers of the North American Continent in Ireland in 861, or 031 years he-fore Columbus discovered the West Indies, and was credited with the discovery of America. In 1000 Leif Eriksson was sent by King Olof of Norway to proclaim Christianity in Greenland, and it" was declared and conceded that Labrador, Newfoundland. Nova Scotia and the northeastern part of the United Slates were visited, ana, to a limited extent colonized. It was the information gained by Columbus from the reports atid accounts of the discoveries of Leif Eriksson and others, that lead him to his voyages and explorations, to the discoveries he made. This is is no sense a reflective discreditmonl.

of Columbus, or Americus Vespucius, to whom all glory is justly due for the Great discoveries, lor as Dr. Carl Swenson rightly says. "Columbus found America when il ought to have been found" and the results of his discovery exceeded (hose of the heroic Eriksson and his compatriots, and were far Greater and Grander ments of John Bricson with his "Cheese Box that rose form tin; water and destroyed the great Alabama, a Mau-of-War ship of the Confederacy. II astonished the Naval Engineers of the world. Our Swede and Norwegian people come to the deserts of the West Mississippi and to the Woods of Northern Minnesota, Wisconsin and Main-toba, ami have subdued them to habitation, suecesful cultivation and constructed the finest schools, churches, homes, towns and cities, as they can point with pride to Minneapolis and SI.

Paul and to nearly all the cities of Minnesota and to a lesser extent, elsewhere. They can point with pride to lion. Knute, Nelson, late Congressman, Governor and U-nited Slates Senator from Minnesota, and one of the strong men of this Nation, also lo the late Governor Johnson of Minnesota, who, had he lived, would have probably been President, and, also to the Hon. John Lind. a Swede, Hon.

N. P. Hangar, a Norwegian, and Hon. K. Halvor-sen, a Norwegian, all former members of Congress, of honorable records for their people.

We can point with the greatest pride lo the glorious, accomplishments on the barren wind-swept plains of Kansas, by Dr. Carl Swensson than whom no grander man in all human attainments ever glorified the illustrious history of Kansas, or any stale. His works will live to his honor for centuries to come. The City of Lindsborg, Kansas, and its magnificent schools and college, are living monuments to his Mental resources, tireless energy and resistless courage. He was a menial and physical giant, will) a dynamic propeller thai forced him on to a premature death, bill his life's work goes gloriously on and on lo honor and ren I have noticed that half sort of a smile they are exhibiting these days, you will know same is halfway chargeable lo their winning the half sort of a prize.
