He is SUNDAY AMUSEMENTS. Yesteeday, about noon, news was brought to the Republic reporter that a murder had been committed oa Kansas Avenue. An investigation showed that a colored man named Jim Hoit had been struck on the head with a loaded cane by Doc Ward a white man. It appears that Hoit had been visiting the various sa loons that are supposed to be closed on Sundays, with a chun hymn book under his arm and beer in his stomach. It appears that in one of the saloons on the west side of the street he.

had entered in to an altercation with another man regarding some matter, when words passed betweeu him and Ward. The latter claims that Hoit was pulling a revolver when he struck him with a loaded rattan cane, inflicting a severe wound on the temple. Hoit was felled to the ground, where he lay until dragged in the shade by some passing men. His wounds were dressed and he was hauled home. At last reports he was doing well.

Ward went over the river and surrendered himself for assault and battery, giving bonds. It is hardly necessary to say that we have no reports of this kind to make as arising in any ofour churches or behind them. The law looks to tbe closing of the former butnot the latter. Many good citizens say the saloons must be opened on Sundays as well as other days iu fact that if people wish to purchase free whisky they can do so. NEW DRUG STORE.
