THE NEW WOMAN. THE WORLD MOVES. We well remember the time when reformers were denounced in the most bitter terms from the pulpit and the rostrum as abolitionists. A little lter on the awakened conscience of the nation deified John Brown, it is a common boast that, I was an abolitionist before the war." To-day, we hear reformers denounced as socialists, and the awakened conscience ot the masses will ere long be singing the praises of its chief exponents. And a little further on, those who are denouncing will be heard no more in public places unless it shall be to boast that they were socialists.

Our townsman, Ex-Senator John Martin, sees the handwriting on the wall, and in a recent interview, placed himself on record by saying: In the Divine economy I don't think it is lawful, or morally right to exclude any man or class of men from the full enjoyment of light and heat or the means necessary and proper for the support of himself and those dependent upon him. God never intended that any man or class of men, should monopolize the surface of the earth to the exclusion of others. So it is with the highways of the world, the seas, rivers and lakes. These are the common property of mankind, and upon the same principle, the gold and silver, the coal and iron and all' other minerals stored in the bowels of the earth were intended for the precise purposes for which they are being used, and God never intended that any man, or set of men should have a monopoly of all these great agencies of life necessary to human existence, to the exclusion of all others. If a monopoly of the soil of the earth be morally wrong, a monoply of the material elements of the earth, or any part of them, such as coal, iron, air, light and heat, is equally more inconsistent with the Divine economy a id is manifestly wrong.

The Social Democracy canuot fail to be a most po tent factor in the education of the people on economic questions, and will thus pave the way for the organi-tion of equitable exchange, which will leave the tribute that is now paid in the shape of interest, profit and rent in the hands ot its producers. The agitation of thought is the beginning of wisdom, and wisdom must culminate in business organization. Our thought force is creative. In this respect man is said in Genesis to be an image of his creator. Man as a thinker is a creator.

But this creative power may be, so to speak, either good or evil, high or low. Each individual, male or female, has the power to control this creative force, by establishing habits of thought. If the habits of thought tend toward the development of intellectuality, intellectual development will be the result, but if they are of what may be called the tin horn character, the development will approximate the level of the tin horn intellectual capacity. If the habits of thought are toward the building up of a strong healthy body and mind, our growth will be in the direction of strength and vitality, but if the current of our thoughts are of our weakness and our danger of disease, we will develope the conditions of weakness and disease which we formulate in our minds. In either case, we will be using the God-like creative power of thought to establish our own conditions.

We are masters of the situations just as soDn as we learn to exercise the powers which are inherent in every human being. The papers with scare headlines announce that wheat has reached one dollar per bushel and of course prosperity is here. Had the price of wheat been increased as the result of the increased wages paid to American laborers it would indeed be a source of rejoicing, but it comes as. result of crop failures in other countries, which place millions on the verge of starvation. The first effect on American workman will be to increase the cost of living without any corresponding increase in their ability to purchase.

The first effect on the American farmers will be to enable them to reduce the aggregate volume of their indebtedness. So the pro rata of the benefit to the American wage worker will be indirect and quite small, and even this small benefit, from the increased consumption of the agricultural population and the increase in the carrying trade will end with the first good crop in the old world. No lasting prosperity can come uuder our present economic system. The present rise in wheat is at the expense of the untold suffering of millions of people in South America, Europe and Asia. Compared with them our condition is prosperous, but compared with our opportunities as a people the outlqok is anything but TIT ANTED Every one to know that Pond's school has the bes TV course of business training now known.
