KANSAS CITY to Wilder De Soto Eudora Lawrence Lccompton Glendale Topeka The only direct railroad route into the San Juan country is by the Atchison, Topeka Santa Fe Railroad. By taking this route tho distance Is shorter than any other lino by 143milos. Connections with this road are made from all points east at Kansas City or Atchison. This great lino of road commences at both of the above-named points on tho Missouri river and extends 033 miles, via Topeka, the capital of Kansas, thcnco southwest to the Arkansas river, and thence up the fertile and beautiful valley of the Arkunsus to the western terminus At Pueblo, Colorado. All passenger trains on this line are equipped with the estinghouse Air Brake, Miller Couplers and Platforms, all modern improvements, and make faster time than any rood west of the Missouri river.

From Pueblo there are two main lines of travel into the San Juan country. The first Is via the main lino of the Denver Rio Orande Railway (narrow gauge) from Pueblo to Cucharas, A distance of CO miles to the southwest, where connection is made with Barlow Sandersons now and splendidly equipped Southern Overland Mail and Express line to Del Norte and Lake City, And the famous Summit mining district, and to all intermediate points. This shortens the overland route into the San Juan country at least 50 miles to what it was last season. The wagon road from Cucharai via Del Norte to Lake City is good at all seasons of the year. It passes through the Sangre de Cristo Pass to Fort Garland, across the San Luis Valley to Del Norte, and up the valley of tho Rio Grande to Antelope Springs, and turning to the right over the divide by easy grades to Lake City, where it connects with roads and trails running into all parts of the Lake, Adams, Eureka, Uncompaligre Rnd Animas mining districts.

Another route to the western portion of the San Juan country is from Pueblo to Canon City, Thence through the Poncho Pass to Saguache, Lake City, Animas Forks, Silverton and Parrott City. Barlow Sanderson run a splendid grey horse stage line by this route from Canon City to Saguache and Del Norte, and also from Saguache west to Lake City. The road is good for all kinds of travel. There is a good road to the mines from Colorado Springs through the Ute Pass, Intersecting the route from Canon City to Del Norte through the Poncho Pass. There is still another line ot travel to tho mines through the Mosco Pass, which is In the Sangre do Cristo range, north of the line from Cucharas.

Tho Sangre de Cristo gold mines lie north of the Mosco Pass and extend about 25 miles therefrom. When the passenger reaches Tueblo he has a variety of routes and inodes of conveyance to the San Juan mines. The mines may be reached by stage coach or private conveyance from Pueblo, Cucharas or Canon City. Del Norte is on the south bank of the Rio Grande and on the western border of the San Luis Park. It is on a favorite route to the mines and is one of the largest mining towns of Southwestern Colorado.

The Summit Cold Mines Are reached by a wagon road and trail from Del Norte 25 miles to the southwest. Silverton is in Bakers Fnrk, on the Pacific Slope, and in the centre of a vast silver mining region. The most direct route from Del Norte to Silverton Is via Wagon Wheel Gap, Antelope Tark, and thence west to Jen-nisons Ranch, near tho head of the Rio Grande, at the eastern base of the main range, and about 15 miles from tho Animas mining district in New San Juan county. Freight in parcels, not exceeding 300 pounds, is taken over the main range to Ilowardsvillo and Silverton by pack animals, but heavy machinery is taken on wagons over the Summit. This route by Del Norte and Antelope Park is along the valley of tho Rio Grande, and the advantages of following main watercourses makes this a favorite route to the mines.

There is a good road from Del Norte to the Alamosa district down the west side of the San Luis Valley.
