Lewis Palenskb is an old resident and having been born in i the county is therefore a genuine Jayhawkcr. He combines two brandies of busitics and makes a success of both, keeping a book store and geueral fancy bazar in the front part of bis store where one finds a complete stock of stationery, wall paper, notions, fancy goods, toys, etc. In the rear of the store he carries on a photograph gallery. He has a fine studio and being the artist himself liu gives general satisfaction.

Mr. Ralcusitc is an old settler and is much liked. He owns line dwelling property in the town and also some valuable pioperty in Alta Vista. a villiage sixteen miles south of here. II.

M. Berry carries on a jewelry store in tho building with Mr. IV.enskc and has a general stock of goods in his line. He came here from Ohio, where he was engaged in tho same business, three years ago. He does all sorts of wutch and clock repairing, cleaning, and being an old and practical jeweler is meeting with the success lie deserves.

Si. H. Fairfield Co. This firm has been in the real estate business here for three years. Mr.

Fail field, the senior member of the firm has resided here i double store on Missouri street where he does all sorts of repairing, etc, E. Wetzel, proprietor of the city bakery, came from Newton a year and a half ago, where he had resided since 1871. Mr. Wetzel is quite a prominent man here, owning a handsome business block and some residence praperty. He also owns residence property in Newton He runs a general bakery and lunch room, keeping confectionery, ice cream and oysters in season.

His is a good place to go. Matt Thompson, the out-going county superintendent, was elected in 1878 and held bis position for ten years. He is the present postmaster, having held that position for the last three years. He is an old resident having spent thirty-two years in the county, is much liked and respected by all who know him, and is rated with the best men of the community. Alex Muir is proprietor of the Liberty Bakery.

He is native of Scotland and formerly ran a branch store at Herington. Mr. Muir has been in Alma three years and is mooting with much success ns he does most of hi advertising in tho dining room nnd his patrons always come bnck ngaiu. L. Tries, is a native of Germany, who came here six of stone which is plentiful around there, the quarries forming quite a source of wealth to the owners.

There has just been completed a fine stone block' of four two-storv buildings, and these, iu addition to the many other fine ones facilities for the carrying on of business, unexceptional. The Waubunsoe County News and the Enterprise, both of them typical Kansas papers, are full of news on all Borts of subjects. Iu operation there, is a very large cement works. It is already a paying institution and it can safely lie predicted thut it will lie even more so in the future, for this is bound to be one of the big Kansas manufactories. The Great Rock Island route and a branch of the Santa Fe railroad crosses here, thus affording the citizens unsurpassed shipping facilities.

Alina is built on and among a cluster of small hills and is a very picturesque and attractive place. Shade trees are plentiful and good water is obtained at a reasonable depth under any spot or place in the town. The city is an old one, having been fust settled nearly a quarter of a century ago. It never booms the German element of the populace do not believe in such things, hut it always has and no doubt always will enjoy a steady and wholesome growth and Missouri Facltle, 'Ft.
