Man, properly speaking, is the descendant and highest representative type of a succession or series of animated nature the germ or primordial form of which was and called into existence by a mysterious agency, or mysterious sotne-t ling, innumerable ages since. Man is in the strictest sense, the direct offspring or progeny of primeval, or pre-adamite life. This is a proposition that is established and verified by the deductions of science and philosophy. That man cannot be the work of a separate and speciiil creation, is apparent from the fact furnished by analogy, namely that of a close, and striking resemblance to many other species of vertebrate animals now existing. Life did not appear upon the earth or in the waters until alter that body had emerged from the fiery state and undergone mighty changes and hud become fitted for nabiiatiou sustenance of life.

On being thrown off from the son by the inherent eruptive energy of that tmghry luininnus orb, ihe earth remained for a period of time in the form vaporovs gases, which on final condensation and in obedience to immutable laws were resolved into, and became an oblate-spheroid and in due time, after having progressed from that condition of igneous fluidity by which our planet was once known and after terrible internal convulsion, and tremendous upheavals, became partially tamed, and sub dued as it were, and reached a comparatively quiescent state ana in obedience to certain natural laws evolved from its own mass by an mate and latent energy forms of being and endowed them with the principle which we are pleased to term Life. This life was first embodied in the humble zoophyte, which expanded into the crustacean, the crustacean into the fish, the fish into the reptile, the reptile into the bird, the bird into the mammal, aud the mammal into man. Man is now vastly inferior to what he is yet to be. He is in the infancy of his being. Nature's watchword from the beginning of creation has been progression, and no instance has she retrograded, or turned back.

Man has only made his debut here. In the eternal years yet to come, he will though "crushed to earth rise again" and perfect his intelligence. The'first period or epoch of highly-generalized mammalia is fast approaching its close. Man will soon go to his long home, but no mourners will go about the streets, for none will be left to mourn. The horizon of his present state of action is becoming hazy.

The sun of his life is growing dim, its light must soon fide from his eyes, then sil-lence alone wil proclaim his benediction, and darkness will sing his funeral dirge Soli! or Exchanged. J. P. FIQRpAn CO. H.
