An elderly gentleman, claiming to he looking out a location for an eastern colony, came to this neighborhood last week and asked Jones and 1. W. Bayne each separately for their address, which as leadil.v given on slips ot paper in case lie should isli to eoi respond with them after lie went east.

Atter-waids lie made out a note and signed their names to it, on which lie tried to raise $25 at tlie Bank in Anthony, but failed, ow ing to tlie suspicion that the signatures were not genuine. The boys talk of giving him a benefit. Tlie semi-anuai meeting of tlie Kansas Woo Growers Association will lie iieid at Emporia, Kas. on June lt, 1SS1, at 2 oclock, P. M.

Matters ot importance in connection with the sheep exhibit at the State Fair this fall will come up for consideration, and lor this reason it is important that there should lie a large attendance. The A. T. A IS. F.

Parties in this vicinity desiring to attend tlie meeting can procure these low railroad rates by giving their name- to Bunneil and Roys, over the Boston Store. Mad log Scare.

Early this morning two men came into the city from their farms 23 miles south-west, in searcli ot a physician ami a mad stone. Last Saturday, one of tlie brothers, II. A. Jones, was bitten on the arm by a dog. but thought nothing more of it until Monday, when (he animal showed unmistakable signs of having the rabies-snapping at other animal-, Ac and a cow which it previously bit is showing peculiar signs of teeth poison.

This of course has alarmed Mr. Jones lienee liis earnest seeking for remidrs from a glaring and horrible, but a sure death. lie may go up to Great Bend, where it is claimed a good mad stone is to be had, and as we can learn further tacts of tlie case the Republican will state them. Tlie lecture of Rev. Dr.

DeLew in tlie Presbyterian church Monday evening was a decided success, and judging from tlie multitudinous encomiums overboard on returning, a new edition of joyous exclamations is needed to convey gratifying expressions for such occasions. He is decidedly well versed with hi3 subject, The Jew. and gave a vivid and well worded resume of that tried and prophetic race, without a home or country, holding tlie large and intelligent audience spell-hound from beginning to end. The lecture mingled not a little with a relishable whim of sarcastic humor, which was none tlie less well re-cieved than his encomiums upon the good deeds, traits, characteristics and long suffering of this notorious people. ithout respect to creed or nationally, we are quite sure there was universal satisfaction rendered to all who heard this really meritorious effort or Dr.

De-Lew on The Jew. City Resources. Now that the City derives no further revenues from whiskey selling, it may be interc-ting to our readers to learn from hat sources tlie city fathers now look for the sinews of war. Tlie figures, it must he remembered, represent tlie per annum license, although they are collected only semi-annually. Auctioneers shall pay $100 each, pawnbrokers $100.

brokers $100, keeicrs of billiard tables, for eaeli table $10. keepers of vehicles for hire in the city, $10 for each one-horse and $20 for each two-tiorse vehicle, for eaeli two-lmr-e omnibus $20, for eaeli four-hor-e omnibu- $25, keepers of bowling alley $15, kecers of scabs $10, express and telegraph companies 15, fire and life insurance companies $5, peddlers $35, street $50, keepers ol pigeon-hole and bagatelle tables $10. The actual loss to tlie city in consequence of there being no whiskey licenses i-stied amounts to $6000. 'ihc income from tlie sources above amounts to $500. The following paragraphs are from tlie 'Arkansas City Democrat of this week: Gen.

John McNeil with four Otoe duels and F. M. Barnes, Trader, arrived in this city hist Fiiilay, and Saturday morning, with Frank Sehiffbauerasgui-le proceeded to tiie Indian Territory to spy out a reservation tor the tribe. Chiefs represent the different bands composing the tribe, and if they are satisfied with the country, (they seem to be) tho hole out-fit ill migrate to thi- locality in a short time. The General is of tlie opinion that they will want to Ihj located as near tiie btate line as x.Mble and will probably pick out a reservation in close proximity to tlie NezPerecs and, Poncas.

Tlie tribe number between eight and twelve hundred, and if located near this point, will add much to the trade of our city. This is a good move, and we hope Uncle Sam will keep it np until every tribe on tiie continent is located in tlie Territory. If we cannot have it opened up or a railroad through it. let it be tilled up witli Indians, so we can derive some benefit from it. Iiev.

Serve it cold and spsead it on mince pie and it makes capital desert, and Jakie slid out of the door and left the old lady looking like a wrinkle on a monument.

I will liear my share of thu expense. Yours etc. A City Mkrchani. Leavenworth and tho Now Liquor Law. Tlie County Attorney of Leavenworth has been pressed for an opinion ns to the probabilities of the amendment filing enforced in that city.

'I he alt expressed liis belief that it was possible blit not very probable that tlie law would be enforced. The informant in any case would have to he a thoroughly responsible parly. No man of struw would be listened to. If the Temperance people as a body continued to tight tlie que-tion they might possibly succeed in convicting, but his own private opinion was that it would be a difficult matter to accomplish. It was told the ounty Attorney that tlie Brewers of Leavenworth proposed to manulactnre a heretofore, but to make bis sales and shipments in Missouri, across tlie river from Leavenworth.

Tim Attorney simply replied that would rim undisturbed, un css complaint was made against them. It was submitted to him that the County Attorney of Shawnee county had under advisement tlie advisibiliy of bringing action against all transportation companies ho deliver liquors in the city, tint tlie County Attorney oi Leavenworth was of the decided opinion that such an action could never bo sustained. Reviewing tlie whole que-tion the Attorney gave it as liis opinion that it would lie difficult, if not impossible, to cnloree the law in that county, and said I think it 111 be almost impo-siblo to enforce it. I think that there will lie almost as much liquor drank as ever, only it will he drank clandestinely; for instance, in tlie hotels and hoarding houses. Boarders buy cases of beer, anc have the put it on ice for tln-m, und-cach one gets it and drinks it as he wants it.

This I know to he done, and in that way tlie law does not roach them. I think it is possible to enforce the law in Leavenworth, hut it is not probable. We are too near Missouri. Mail Dog Hite. In Tuesdays issue we gave the particulars of D.

M. lie says the stone adhered to tlie flesh and could not be lifted from tlie arm. but when tho arm was turned over it would occasionally drop off. There was a small quantity of greenish appearing matter on the stone when it was taken from the arm. Tlie arm lias several water blisters upon it around tlie incisions ruado by tlie dogs teeth.

Whether there be any vir tun or not in flic mad stone wo dont claim to know, hut Mr. Jones seems to have implicit faith.
