An Enterprising Jeweler. Yesterday going in the direction of the depot we happened into a store west of the Tremont house, known us Curiys Jewelry House. Here we were bewildered and almost blinded with dazzling, sun-lit jewels ot the first water, and in such numbers and shapes that it would take the pens of a thousand ready writers to do anything like justice to this rnarvel-ous display. We might denominate them electric lights iu minature. Then there were lesser lights or jewels not claiming to be of the fir-t water, although to a novice looking almost as brilliant as those in proximity to them.

The latter, Mr. Curry informed us, were but about one fourth the value of the jewels already referred to. We were certainly no little taken aback to find in this city such an extensive and valuable selection ol jewels ot intrinsic and undoubted merit, specially imported in the iuterest oi the upper ten thousand. We were show one invoice lor $981 and another lor $500 was now on its way to Mr. Curry.

A Sad Case of Need. 7 We are requested by two ot our most reliable citizens, Mes-rs. Tim Lane and F-W. Grten, to make our readers acquainted witli tiie sad fact that one of our oldest settlers, SamlW. Fitzgerald, ho lives one mile south ot tow Is and lias been lor quite a while confined to ti is bed by a most enervating, not to -ay slow death, disease.

He is almost entirely paialyz on one side and lias become as helple-s as a child. Poor Fitzgerald is well know to all of us as an hone-t. sober, industrious tanner, and (or a number of years was elected to serve as ol 'the Peace for his town-hip ich-ita.) To-day lie and his ile ate in absolute want of tiie necesiarics ol life and wekuow that our good, symt utilizing people require simply to be told ol tiie eireiim-tance to bring them to the Iron with pecuniar relief. Scene in a Saloon in West Wichita. Hearing rumors of sad occurrences in a west iehita saloon we deemed it our duty as journalists to wait upon the proprietor with a view of ascertaining the actual facts. As is generally the case in sncli matters the fl ing reports as retailed from one to another lose by nothing repitition.

This case has been no exception to the rule, It appears that the combatants met at the Farmer's Saloon on Thursday night lat just as persons do meet in such places, having no uer-sonal animosity or standing grudge the one against the other, in tact they appeared to be on the most friendly terms. There was the usual routine of beer treating for, it is thought, three or four times round; although Mr. C. Miles, who was in charge oi the bar, is of opinion that they might have indulged some little prior to their making an appearance in Farmers Saloon. Becoming somewhat exhilerated through an injudicious mixing of drinks one ol the parties, Ed.

Piper, it is thought, either in iuu or not knowing what he was doing, emptied the contents of his glass into the face ot Geo. Sexton. This was of course too much for flesh and blood, already overheated with whiskey and beer, and without a momenta hesitation. Piper struck Sexton a severe blow witli his glass inflicting what was conceived to be at the time a dangeroas wound a little in the rear of the lett temple, breaking glass and embedding a portion ot the same about halt an inch square in Che wound, which was subsequently extracted by Mrs. Farmer.

Sexton bled profusely. and becoming faint Mrs. Farmer washed and dressed the wound, put him to bed, and next morning alter breakfast sent him home to lit- friend-. We had an oportunity of inspecting the piece ot glass which was taken out of Sextous liead and could not resist the conclusion that had it been lodged hall an inch lower in the temple it would have resulted in apoplexy and perhaps death. Piper, weare told, made movements as though he meant further business by putting li is hand into his pocket which, however was fortunately prevented by the timely interferes ot other parties in the saloon.

The report that Geo. Sexton was dead is untrue. The last heard irorn him giving the as-uranee that he was doing ell. Piper has been arrested and will stand his trial in the usual way. Chris Miles who lias been personally know to us tor many tears was keeping bar at the time tins disturbance happened and assures us that the whole thing has been much exagerated by the public.

The laet, as disclosed to us. would certainly go to exonerate trom all blame both Mr. Farmer and Mr. Miles. A thousand and one such cases are happening in such like places throughout the country every week, and will continue so to do so long as that which steals away the senses and maddens the man is vended, under and with the express sanction of the laws of this so-called civilized, Christian, church-going country.

A Spirit from De Vasty Debt. Last Nights Rowdyism. We think It must have been about 12 o'clock last night when we were startled from our slumbers by human, but bruit-ish cat calls, dog barkings, neighing of horses, bellowing of cows, bleating oi sheep, and noises which no man can lather, inasmuch as the like had never before been heard by denizens' this side of the infernal regions. Had we not many years ago fallen into the practice or burning a lamp in our bed room at night, by the light of which we could at once satisfy ourselves that we were domiciled at home, we- should certainly hat come to the conclusion that we had crossed the chasm and were with the devil and his imps. It is to be hoped that if such insane, unearthly conduct is again indulged in at so untimely an hour our city police will not fail to seize the ring leaders, so that next morning we may have an opportunity of inspecting the leaders either through iron bars or shackled in chains, and expressing our opinions as to the species these nocturnal prowlers are of.

and thus adding some little to our Darwinean lore. From Monday's Daily. The Oxford Weekly handed in its checks last week, and is now numbered among other similar institutions in the newspaper graveyard at Oxford. We offer our usual condolence. Mr.

Jay Goulds special train, on which is now flying from point to point throughout the Southwest, is described as being as magnificent as. money can make it. There are two gorgeously upholtered drawing room cars, the convoy palace, a hotel car and sleeping cars for the party. Cooks and porters in great numbers have-places on board the train. Roushs restaurant is certainly growing in the estimation of the public, as is demonstiated by the large crowds visiting it every day.

We have tested his table, and had it not been for the excellent workmanship of the carpenter who put the lumber together ve should have doubted whether Roush's liberat supplies would not have causes us to have a break down. Mike Zimmcrly. weare informed, does not intend to run for councilman for the first ward at the coming election. He is ol the opinion that he can make it in an easy walk without any OLeary training. Anyone daring to oppose Mike will be butchered at the polls of course.

No one dry goods store since Wichita was known has ever made so large a purchase or had so many goods on the road at one time a3 has Cash at this writing. He informed us this morning that his clerks were unloading three car loads to-day, and that he had seven more cars on the way. Our idea Is that Cash ought to make application to the authorities to divert p'-destrianism on the east side of Main street lor one week at least, the time it will take to unload his enormous stock.

Cash is not only a good shot at glass hails, but be can shoot above the head and Shoulders of any of his competitors in the dry goods business. In fact he is a second A. T. Stewart, or the A. Stewart of the far west.
