Tho name of young Lincoln was first prominently mentioned for the presidency just previous to the convention of 188-1. At that time Albian Tourgie placed him prominently forward as an aspirant, publishing his portrait in the now defunct Continent zine.

Politicians, however, looked Mr. Lincoln more as a possible presidential candidate than they tho first office. Mr. Lincoln re-four votes on the first ballot, grew to eight on the third ballot the fourth cast his adhort ids Blaine. Mr.

Ventilation ns applied to the building was a misnomer. There were no windows and what air there was came through narrow passage ways. It was vitiated as soon as it came through theso appertures, and to breathe was to inhale the fetid breath of a thousand other persons, who, to use the language of G.

William Curtis, must have been very thirsty as you may well believe. And it was hot. Light was admitted through the great skylights in the roof of tho building, and through these the sun poured with torrid fierceness. There was nothing for the convention to do but to swelter. It is to bo hoped that more comfortable provision will be made in Chicago.

If the Chicago press may be trusted, tho arrangements avoid many of the horrors of tho St. Louis convention. According to the descriptions in many of the Chicago papers, the delegates and spectators will at last enjoy the boon of fresh air, and plenty of it, while they will not be exposed to the merciless heat of the sun. Moreover all the spectators, no matter where in the hall they may be seated, will be able to see and hear everything that happens on the lioor a felicity not to be enjoyed in tho St. Louis convention.

The delegates at Chicago are assigned to the pit of the auditorium, a space eighty feet one way and ninety-five feet the other. All around this space the galleries rise, and the most distant spectator will be only 100 feet away from the delegates and in full view of them. In front of the pit where the delegates sit is a raised platform for the newspaper men, in the center of which will be the position of the president of the convention, a dais and platform being provided for him and the officers of the convention. The great difficulty about theso conventions is overcrowding. Too many spectators are admitted.

This evil not only often neutralizes whatever provision has been made for fresh air and comfort, but it tends to tumult enthusiasm, those of ribald imagination call it. Of course there is prodigious popular pressure for admittance to the wittenagemotes of great political parties, but it should be so resisted and restrained that the result would not lx terference with the dignity ceedings and the reasonable to business. In a recent issue the Patriot says that the population of Atchison is about 20,000. The basis npon which these figures are founded is undoubtedly solid and we wonld commend the process by which they are obtained to the Topeka papers which overestimate the population of that city by about one-third.
