R. FARNSWORTH, PROP, Wli'lillit ft Colontilit. Attorney Jones finished the argument Thursday evening nnd nt 7 oolook the ease was I rued over to the Jury. They did not reach a verdict until yesterday inoruiug lit 8 oclock, after being out nil night. The Urst vote stood six to six in favor of guilt or iunooenoe, which way it remained during the tedious hours of night.

Yesterday morning they decided that the defendant was guilty of manslaughter in the second degree and rendered tlioir verdict aooord-ingly. When it wne announced thnt a verdiot hnd been reached, theoourt room was soon crowded with anxious people and as the Jury ninrohod in the sheriff came in with the prisoner, who seemed in his usoal state of composure and looked as if lie had rested well during the night. The verdiot was then read. The penally in this case is three or five years in the penitentinry and theoourt will, perhaps sen tenia him next Monday. This case has been watched with a groat deal of interest as the people of this glorious state of Kansas were anxious to see whioh way the jury would deoide and which was a greater orime in the eyes of the people of this state, whiskey selling or murder, and this case has demonstrated it exactly.

This ended the oriminal docket with the exception of several indictments found by grand jury, which wilt be called at the November term. Tho oivil oases will be taken np Monday aud there nre a grent many. Court then adjourned till Monday. OKl'AIlT AllltIVK Hutililiimn mul it 11:50 ji in I Input oorner Huuoiul mul Wlulilla struuti. Mr. P. J. Ky.ii of New Holluml, Illinois, wa In Wichita fids week. Ho is so well pleased that when he goes home lie will give Wichita good send-off.

L. B. Davis, representing the John Morris Company, of Chicago, Is in the city. Mr. Davis is one of the handsomest drnmmcrs in (lie west.

He is so sociable and agreeable that his sales are very hoavy, particularly in Western and Southern Kenans. Whenever In the city, Birch patronizes the excellent Tremont. Five yonra ago, lie bought lots In the Carey Purk, mid has nmilo rloh strike. Ton years ago ho was olTored 200 feet ou Dougins avenue, where tho Richland block now stands, for $2000, Ho considers this the banner oity of the state, and predicts 100,000 population for Wichita in five years. Davis resides Nowport, and is thinking seriously of removing to our oity.

The brewers are now on tho anxious seat. Tho internal revenue bureau has instructed the government chemist to analyze a specimen of all tho diflersut kinds of boor manufactured in this country. Thu specimens havo been purchaaud nt the places where they nre kept for sale. The honest brewer will have nothing to fear from the chemical examination, but those who have been making beer out of corn, rice, cucculus, indicna and other druga will wait for the report with fear and trembling. The report is to be submitted to congress, and some of the pnpers think that the uveaage congressman is about as good a Judge of the quality of beur as oau be fouml.

We tremble for Wichitas reputation, for we know that the products of the secret stills, sold iu joints, will not bear inspection. It is the editor's ditty to spunk of Ills town as tho lovhost place beneath heavens blue arch. Speak of a deceased citizen ns the fallen oak when lie dies of the Jim Jams. Cali a man a prominent citizen when yon know him to be, tho best poker plnyer. Speak of a little street Arab ns a bright-eyed yonlli on the rond to fame, and of tho big -footed, rod-headed newly married woman as the accomplished bride.

Call a lawyer a leading light of whom the profession ought to be prond, when you knbw him to be an ordinary pettifogger, and for this lie is iu luck if he receives even thanks. If half the people iu town would tabor as assidiously to upbuild the local paper qr they do to tear it up nnd oritioise, it would never be otherwise than prosperous. The same people are not open to criticism themselves, of course. A Tragedy Prevented. Yesterday morning as a Dkmocbat pencil pusher was going down East Douglas avenue, ho observed Officer Harman shove a guti" down his pocket nnd jump into hjs saddle and run up the street at breakneck speed.

Being a sort of an inquisitive cuss, we ventured to inquire, nnd found that a man mimed Bill Cook, being in an intoxicate 1 condition, had obtained a shot gun and threatened to kill his better half, and tho officer arrived just in time to prevent him. It secuis that he nnd his wife had a little trouble, and she went to her sister-in-law's, Mrs. Henry Martin, who lives np near Hydraulic avenue, where her husband went after her with the aforesaid persuader. He skipped out, and was not arrested. Wichita Western.

The Democracy will have ouo of those morn-ing pnpers, and the pnper established now will be to Wichita wlmt the Times is to Knnsns City, MONEY, womc AND TIME Is needed to place tho paper ou a sound basis.

Nothing so much rollouts the enterprise and good points of a city ns morning pnpers. They tell the world what the city is doing, how the tradesmen transact business, whnt the capitalist will do nnd how tho people will receive you.

Murdock has written a communication to the council asking thnt body to recommend that tho nppropalution for the Government building he raised from $75,000 to $100,000. When the first appropriation was made Wichita had only 12,000 people. Now that 40,000 persons cal this home the appropriation will have to be greatly increased. The building must be enlarged nnd if it is built according to the progress now made, Wiceita will have 200,000 people by the time the building is under roof. The Kansas Freemen.

Wiltsee, who, lit 1873, killed Joseph McIntyre Iu Mexican Pete's saloon on Brondway, The ciraumstniices of the killing were published iu nearly every prominent journal in tho United States, and a reward of $5,000 was offered for the arrest of the k.illor. TDK CIUOUMHTANUE of the crime are as follows: On the llltli day of October, 1H73, Jos.

Molutyre entered Mexican Pete's" enloon and or-(lured a drink of brandy, laying down therefor tho aum of fifty cents In payment. Just ns McIntyre raised the liquor to bis mouth, Wiltsee, who ia a desperado of the first class, stepped up to the bar nnd grasping tho glnas drank the contents, saying! von, now is Tnis. Home words were passed botween the two men, when suddenly Wiltsee drew a gnn and fired, shooting McIntyre throngh the right lung. The latter fell io the floor of the saloon, and In the confusion of the oocesion the murderer made good his escape. TnR WOUNDED MAM lay between life and death for abont ten days, and finally died.

Immediately thereafter the mnyor of Dendwood offered a reward for the arrest of the murderer, and the various detective agencies throughout the United Stntoa and Caunda were notified and a description of tho fugitive furnished. One of these circulars foil into the handa of the Kansas Deteolire Bureau, and the manager, Mr, Stinson, placed the mutter in the hands of Mr. Cobb, his associate. Abont 8 oclock last night Mr. Cobb spotted his man on the oorner of Main nnd First streets, nnd walking np to him, said I WANT YOU.

Wiltsee, in common parlance, wilted nt once, and wulked off with Detective Cobb, and was taken over to the oompnny'e office in the Heisermnn-Meyer block, and a guard placed over him awaiting a requisition from tiie Governor of Dakota. At a late hour last night, or in other words at an early hour this morning, Wiltsee said he would go to Dakota without the formality of a requisition, and this morning Detective Scott of the Kansas Detective Bureau will start for Dcadwood via the Atchison, Topeka A Santa Fe with his prisoner. TUB KANSAS DETECTIVE BUBKAU is to be congratulated on this important arrest nnd the management thereof has shown to the public by its action that no guilty man can escape. The Kansas Detective Bureau by its action as above shows thnt the compnny is np to snuff, and the membors of its force composed of A No. I men.

The plant is abont four miles south of the city, along the Santa Fe road. They found everything in full operation and making on an average of 50,000 brick per day.

One kiln which they had just opened contained 250,000 briok, which are of a cherry red and pronounced by contractors to be eqnal if not better than the St.Louis brick. When the hands become familiar with the machinery, the workings and the burning, the brick will supplant the St. Louis briok in this city nnd surrounding towns.
