Heat Way of Taking Stnels-Mm-Stltclies In Time. Mending- is something that nearly everyone has to do a great deal of, often or semi-oeeasionally, as the ease may be. To mend a rent neatly, to bo a good darner, is an accomplishment that any woman may be proud of. Silk dresses, which are so apt to get v.gly three-cornered tears where the skirts have caught on something, tire best mended with their own ravel ings. The stitches do nolt show as they would if made with spool silk, which is differently twisted from the warp of the fabric.

Carefully ravel out threads long enough to sew with, draw the tear together, and damns really as possible; then press with a heavy iron, not hot enough to leave an imprint of its rliapf or torn the color of the silk. Never use a silk thread for mending woolen garments. It is impossible to get exactly the same shades in silk and woolen materials, and the silk threads nresnre to slhow and call attention to the darn. Cotton is much Iretter for the purpose than silk and the rovelings of the goods to be mended are superior to both. From the surplus pieces left when the gown was made take one from which you can ravel threads, of about ten or twelve, inches, not longer, or you will have trouble in pulling them in and out, as they are sure to rough-up.

If the hole is very irregular or large, baste it. into as good shape as possible with a fine thread; it can be withdraw after the work is completed more easily than a coarse, one would lie. A book cover or piece of pasteboard laid under the whole will enable one to bring the goods together smoothly and flatly. small piece of pasteboard held under the rent while darning is as great a help as a darning ball is to the heel of a stocking. If two or more colors, as in mixed goods, choose the predominating tint; or two or three of the most, prominent colors, and use tirst.

a thread of one, then another. The most troublesome part is threading a needle with wool; but, fortunately, needle holes do not show in woolens as in silks, so one may use a very large-eyed needle. Weave in and out, taking in as deeply into the sound edges as is needed to make ft firm; then weave across the other way if it. does, not seem strong The ragged edges of a hole should not be trimmed for a darn, but s'itches over and under down each torn thread, ith the right side of the. work so as to see that! the threads down.

Deputy. The iews of One of the Klephantft. 5he can do best work ir the work bv turning her own talents to aocoun lo smooth the path of a titan whom sh cun sway and who has all the jjossiliiii-tics before him. So v. hen tly woman does iter utmost to use her brain in his interest, to attend to all details, so as to leave him as free as possible from petty cares and worries Then the man can concentrate tlie whole of his energy in his work, ntal the womans ambition is vicariously satisfied.

She watches the friend, brother and husband, and feels, with half-amused complacency, that but for her his end would never have been attained. And this eternal vvuteliiog and criticism develops in woman a greater power of knowing' what men will do in particular circumstances. Shu has seen so often before that put ticular circumstances have particulai effects in determining the actions ot the workers. In the stress and hurry of the fight the man is not conscious which way the action is tending. Ht is absorbed in doing the duty immediately before him.

The woman looking on coolly can say to him: "See, this line of conduct must lead to this and tit is consequence; you have only to take advantage of it and your success will be assured. It is therefore because woman is essentially a looker-on that she is so invaluable as an adviser to man. To many a great man the advice of an Egeria, even an Egeria of an obviously inferior Intellectual caliber to himself, is almost essential. She can watch and weigh the motives of his adversaries, she can calculate the probable effect of his own ectious, and still more of his words, ihe cun criticise his past decisions and indicate the best chance of success in the future. In fact, to be a woman is to to be a mahout a driver of elephants.

The goad with which she steers the animal is in her hand, but yet she knows, is according to Mr. Rudyard Kipling (very mahout knows, that some day, tooner or later, the great beast will get beyond her control and muy turn on her with a terrible punishment for th insult of having kept him in subjection.
