MISSOURI RURALIST ll1 -August 20, 1015. Any farmer, following our plain directions, Ep can build a Wioderholdt Earthen Jar Silo. Better than wood, concrete, metal or tile. The material used (see cut below) is a special hard burned, interlocking brick. Costs but little more than wood and is absolutely poiiiiamnit.

tility of your soil and decide to stay. It is not nece'ssary to argue the additional comfort of having smooth roads to ride over, hut much wear and tear on vehicles, harness and horseflesh will he saved. The bonds will be paid off in a few years and the money will never be missed. Doth county and state could afford to donate liberally for the money would go back into the treasury because of increased taxation due to greater land values. I will venture the assertion that if one Missouri county would put in a complete road system others would follow suit.

I am a former Missourian ami I know that your land is worth more than ours here. The road system is what makes California land so valuable. Wake up, you Missourians and get your roads in condition to Bell your land. Glendale, Calif. M.

Choose a cleaning day convenient tor the majority, and put the house, grounds arid outbuildings in the best possible condition, Ilan J'or the comfort and physical welfare of the children during the cold and wet months to come. See that the fuel and kindling is ample and well placed. See that the water supply is pure; whatever the cost of clean water is, it is cheaper than funeral bills. Organize a Community or School Improvement society to meet monthly and co-operate with the teach of.

At the end of one years trial you will be amazed to note how much has been accomplished for the school and the community through this effort. The fre juent contact of parents with teacher and children offers opportunity for co-operatmn that will decrease the hardships and failures common to school life in the winter season and increase the desirable results a co-operation that will not bankrupt the treasury and which will lay the ground work for even a latter school the second year. A good school is a growth. It is ab-lolutely untrue that prognss and good service must spell bankruptcy to-the district that maintains it. On tiro contrary, a good school is a valuable asset to the district.

The teacher alone cannot be held responsible for a schools failure, although she is an important factor; nor can the school board be (barged with full responsibility, although its members are important factors in the school life. The community is responsible. It is the voters who fix the schools revenue, and it takes money to run a good school, as it does to run any other legitimate business successfully; it is the voters who name tin- nun who choose the teacher for their children and direct the affairs of the school. Tills being undeniably true, it is to be hoped that each one of the 10,000 one-roorn schools (none so good but it can be improved) will be made to realize some of its many unrealized possibilities this year. To the foregoing suggestions I would add an earnest appeal to make the best possible use of the annual school meeting by levying the maximum prescribed by law if needed and by choosing the best men for directors; by demanding the best teacher that can be hired; by cooperating with the teacher and retaining her services year after year as long as possible; by making some substantial improvement each year, the kind that is jointly advocated by teacher, board, patrons, and eounfcy superintendent; and finally, by making the school house serve the greatest number of persons for the longest possible time every year, both as schoolhouse and as a neighborhood meeting house for social affairs, lectures, club meetings, band practice, and any joiher legitimate activity of the district.

SAVE YOU comets Write Dept. For Catalogue ol the Why Rot Grow Silage? I have met a number of' farmers who say that the silo is not wlmt it is cracked up to be. And some of my neighbors who talked about building silos-just quit. Because they figured that if they hud put their 19141 coin crop in the silo It would have cost them toe much for the amount of feed. This was simply because they were corn of a medium common typo and the stand was poor.

I dont blame them either, considering their crop. When I was a small boy 1 lived in another state. The farmers used crude silos silos built of most anything. They, had their troubles and some failed, blit if you go tbeie today you will find silos built of concrete, tile, brick, and steel, in place of the old wood silos. On many farms two or tlnec silos arc in use instead of the one originally built.

The reason that silos are a piofitnblo proposition then is because those men studied silage, and learned as much about producing silage as our best corn growers know about producing largo yields of coin. We Missouii farmers Lave unlimited resources and we should study conditions and find the crop that will prove profitable. Cowpeas and the light kind of corn grown for silage means success in dairying and stock raising. Farmers in the Northeast are successfully grow-Canadian peas with tlicir corn. Here our section of' the United States wo mg in can successfully add cowpeas to the corn crop. Then instead of our little crop of about 0,000 stalks of coin to the acre let us plant corn that will provide mound twice the amount of fodder.

Cowpeas will increase the amount of silage about one-third and it will have greater food value. And they will increase the fertility of the soil. It is a mistake to try and grow both corn and silage upon thin land. If desire to, grow corn. If you want plant cowpeas and a corn that will proensilage.

I know many farmers if they would investigate, would silage instead of corn and would more to their present silage hold-capacity. If they would do that they would put their business upon a profit making basis. C. E. Berry.

Build Roads California's Way A great deal has been said about the need of good roads in Missouri and mighty little done to obtain them. Missourians seem to be asleep in-the matter but if they only knew the value of good roads they would wake up and get busy. The cost of building good roads is not to be compared with the benefit derived from them. A good road can be built around every section in the average county of 16 townships for $8 an acre tax on the land. The road should not cost more than $2,500 a mile and it will double the value of land.

All very good, says someone, but where will we get the money? Do as we Californians elo issue bonds. Farmers who live along the road can work and earn bonds enough to pay their assessments, if they are so disposed. The motor car tax in California is a big help in building roads and keeping them in repair. Every motor car and motor truck owner must pay $10 a year li-i-euso on a 20 h. p.

machine and $5 additional is charged for every additional 5 h. p. Motorcycle owners pay $5 a year lice use. All this money is turned hack to the counties where the fees came from. Then too, the state makes liberal donations for the upkeep of roads.

All Yelnrie-i used in California must have tires at least'" 4 inches wide and some of the heavy trucks have 12-inch tires. What are the advantages in having good loads? The principal benefit will be in inne'aeel land valuation. The Missouri Ruralists as to who is the oldest mail carrier in point of service in this state brought out the interesting information that a star route carrier has been in service longer than any rural mail man, and traveled more miles.

According to Creed Hamilton of Cassville, Charley Barker has been carrying star route mail out of Shell Knob in Barry county since 1897, covering 28' miles every day. He has not missed more than 30 days work during all these years and as the star route carrier gets neither vacation nor holidays, Mr. Barker has traveled several hundred thousand miles. This efficient carrier makes his route on horseback and hes always on time. Doubtless his salary is not more than half that of the rural carriers but that doesnt prevent Mr.

Barker from doing liis very best. This veteran should be retired on a pension when he finally quits the road. l'VD lnZf is 1 that house or barn get our prices on materials delivered to your nearest R.U. station. E.
