41 Annual Review of The Friendly List The purpose of an edition of this list of concerns that are friendly in their appearance in this issue their sentiment is ciation of the Union man's patronage and firms and individuals honorary mention the fullest extent. THE MILLS COMPANY. Call at this palace of industry when in need of anything in the way of dry goods, carpets and millinery. The Mills Company should be supported by working men's wives to the fullest extent. Their attitude to labor is fair and considerate and we place their name foremost on our friendly list for support during the coming year.

CROSBY BROTHERS. No concern in the city is more worthy of the support and patronage of the working man than Crosby Brothers, located at 717 and 719 Kansas avenue. They have a full line of dry goods, carpets and shoes and their prices are as low as is consistent with modern market values and a small profit. Their attitude towards the labor cause is most fair and considerate and we have much pleasure in calling attention to their well-stocked store at the above address. HERRON MIDDAUGH.

Working men will make no mistake in giving their patronge to Herron Middaugh, the well known and popular gentlemen who conduct the lively clothing and shoe store at 118 East Sixth street. The broad-minded and publicspirited proprietors of this store are Geo. A. Herron and G. P.

Middaugh. They carry a full line, of union made goods and their friendly attitude to labor renders them worthy of the support of every working man in the city. JAMES C. SHIMER. We state with pride that our leading enterprises are very friendly to the labor cause.

This is due to their realization of the fact that only through industrial peace can the full benefit of a city's or state's prosperity be obtained. Strife in the labor world means the expenditure of a large sum of money. While realizing the necessity of asserting ourselves at times we should see to it that we are conservative in our movements. Particular attention is called to Mr. James C.

Shimer, located at 1815 Kansas avenue. He is: dealer in all kinds of coal, feed, hay, and the fact that his 'phones are continually ringing shows he is known. Call up either 'phone 471 when in need of anything in the lines handled by Mr. Shimer. He treats his employees with consideration and is entitled to our support.

THE TOPEKA PURE MILK CO. Among our leading institutions which are friendly to laboring men, none holds a more popular place in the public eye than the Topeka Pure Milk Co. This concern sells Pasteurized milk, cream, ice cream and butter. They can not keep up with the demand for their butter as the inhabitants of our town clamor for it. Mr.

G. M. Noble is president; J. B. Sims is vice president and L.

R. Manley is manager of this broad-minded and public-spirited company which should have the unstinted support of every laboring man in and around Topeka. Their employes are treated with consideration and hold their superior officers in the highest respect and esteem. Call up 537 on either 'phone when in need of anything good in the lines handled by the Topeka Pure Milk Co. L.

M. PENWELL. The above gentleman is one of our leading funeral directors and embalmers and is located at 511 Quiney street. When the dear ones die there is no more satisfaction than knowing that they will be tenderly taken care of by experienced hands. Mr.

Penwell's ability in handling the details of a funeral has built him up one of the best connections in the state. His attitude toward labor i is very friendly and we have much pleasure in endorsing him in this issue. THE TOPEKA PANITORIUM. William Reynolds is the affable proprietor of the above concern, which is located at 115 West Seventh street. The Work done here is of the very best and the prices are most reasonable.

If you want your clothes cleaned or pressed take them to the Panitorium and they will save you buying new clothes. No garment or suit is too soiled to be revived by this enterprise and the cleaned J. D. SULLIVAN'S PICTURE FRAME SHOP. The above named enterprise occupys a most important place in the commercial make-up of our city.

Mr. J. D. Sullivan is the affable proprietor and to his sterling ability and integrity is due to a large extent the success of this establishment which is located at 114 and 122 West Eighth street. The specialties at this enterprise are: Framing, regilding, mat making and mounting, and satisfaction is guaranteed.

THE CREMERIE RESTAURANT. When you want good things to eat go to the Cremerie Restaurant, located at 726 Kansas avenue. You will not only be eating at a place where cleanliness is the first thought on the part of the management but you will be patronizing a man whose sympathies are with organized labor, Mr. C. L.

Scott, the affable proprietor. This well-known restaurant is the favorite mecca not only of the working men of our city but of our business men also. During times of political activity our leading officeholders throughout the state meet here and discuss current topics. This restaurant is open all night. ANDERSON BROS.

The above gentlemen are dealers. in wood, coal and brick. Their yards are at 508 East Sixth street and their 'phones are Bell 550 and Ind. 693. Call up either of these numbers for honest weights and quick delivery for the coming season.

Anderson Brothers wanting your patronage. They are friendly to labor and deserve it. JONES BROS. Jones proprietors of the big store at Quincy and Sixth streets, Topeka, are very modest and simply request us to give the working men their compliments and best wishes--which we do most willingly and would like to do them full justice by an extended writeup, showing their years of friendly attitude towards laboring people. BAIRD. Our manufacturing interests are varied. In his particular line there is no more successful manufacturer than John M. Baird. Copper and galvanized iron cornice; pumps and pipe, tin roofing and all other metal work is manufactured and repaired here.

This firm is located at 216 West Sixth street and is very popular with all classes. The telephone number is Ind. 655 and Bell 359. Call Mr. Baird up when in need of anything in his line.

The remarkable enterprise and ability of Harry E. Gavitt, who is manager of the W. W. Gavitt Printing and Publishing Company; cashier of W. W.

Gavitt manager of the Gavitt Medical Co. and the Gavitt Mercantile and W. W. Gavitt, who is president of both the Gavitt Medical Co. and Gavitt Mercantile Co.

and also Corrington S. Gavitt, who is superintendent of the W. W. Gavitt Medical has been the means of building up these enterprises. Workingmen should co-operate with these enterprises as the gentlemen connected with same are very friendly to the labor cause.

W. W. Gavitt Co. are dealers in real estate, real estate loans and municipal bonds. The W.

W. Gavitt Medical Co. are manufacturing chemists. They manufacture 100 standard and proprietary remedies. Their leader is Gavitt's "System Regulator." Sales for last year were over three million packages.

All druggists sell their output. The W. W. Gavitt Mercantile Co. are manufacturers, manufacturers' agents, and wholesale dealers in bottles, corks, drugs, envelopes, paper, cartons, tin and paper boxes, special machinery, printers' supplies, etc.

The W. W. Gavitt Printing and Publishing Co. turn out printing the same day as ordered. They have eight presses for rush orders and their work is of the highest and most artistic order that can be obtained.

We recommend these concerns to organized labor throughout the United States. FRED REINKE. There is just as much science in shoeing horses as is in any other business. One false or careless drive of the nail and a valuable horse is ruined for life. It is therefore only to our best interests to send our horses where.

they will receive experienced treatment. Such place is Fred Reinke's, located at 1121 Kansas avenue. Mr. Reinke is very fair to labor and we trust our readers will speak a good word for him whenever they can. W.

S. GOSS. Labor should support W. S. Goss to FELIX SONS.

Doing a large business and numbering many laboring men among their patrons Felix Sons should certainly receive the unlimited support of organized labor in this coming year. They have at all times shown that their attitude towards labor is friendly and we are pleased to endorse them in this issue, which will be read by our thousands of working men. They have a full line of clothing and furnishings and are located at 631 Kansas avenue. Patronize this concern to the fullest extent. G.

A. WOOD. Labor should certainly foster and encourage a concern such as above as Mr. Wood has always anifested a most viendly interest in our cause. He is lodated at 832 Kansas avenue and his phone is 380.

He is one of our leading dealers in wall paper, paints, oils and glass. Upon a visit to his well-stocked store one will find a grand display of his season's goods. GRAND UNION TEA CO. Figuring on small profits and enormous sales this company is in a position to save you money. Their business is done on a cash basis; consequently they are able to give their customers the benefit of their immunity from bad debts.

Mr. E. T. Elliott is the capable Topeka manager. Under his experienced guidance the business of the Grand Union Tea Company is continually increasin our city.

Located at 614 Kansas avenue. THE CAPITAL CITY VITRIFIED BRICK PAVING CO. It is one of the broad, underlying principles of labor to foster and encourage enterprises that are friendly to the labor cause. The Capital City Vitrified Brick and Paving Co. has always manifested a mostly friendly interest in the cause of labor and we have no hesitancy in endorsing them in this issue.

Mr. T. A. Beck is president, Mr. Willis Edson is secretary and treasurer, and Mr.

J. W. Boltz is superintendent at yard. Their chice is located at 118 West Eighth street. They took the first prize at the World's Fair in 1893 for paving brick.

KOHL'S PHARMACY. One of our most staunch friends is Mr. Kohl, who has a fine stock of fresh drugs at 732 Kansas avenue. Mr. Kohl has never done anything antagonistic to organized labor and deserves support his store is centrally located and it will pay you to make his place al call every time you come down town.

In fact it will pay you to come down town to make him' a call. He makes prescriptions a specialty. FRANK EFFINGER. No more worthy friend of laboring men does business in our city than Eflinger, the grocer, located at 1822 Kansas avenue. His attitude has always been friendly and a special effort should be made to do everything possible to give our support.

He always keeps on hand a nice clean fresh line of both staple and fancy groceries, and he will make it an object to you to give him a Remember the number. THE EWART LUMBER COMPANY. This company is doing al large and constantly increasing business in its line. We are pleased to note that the employes are treated with due consideration and receive as good compensation as is consistent with business stability and integrity and hold their superior officers in the highest respect and esteem. The lumber sold by this firm is the finest that can be procured at prices most reasonable.

The Ewart Lumber Company are also proprietors of the Topeka Lumber Company with yards at Fourth and Santa Fe track. GEORGE C. BEACH. Working men will make no mistake in giving their patronage to George C. Beach at 218 West Sixth street, when in need of any groceries or provisions.

His relations with both labor and the public are fair and just, and it is, with pleasure that we endorse him in our friendly list. THE ANTISEPTIC BARBER CO. The above named company are filling a long felt want in this city and if you want all microbes killed call at their place, 700 Kansas avenue, and have the "Hypes Sectional Sterilizer" used. The position of this shop towards labor is the most friendly and it deserves 0111' support. EMAHIZER SPIELMAN.

The above firm are complete house furnishers, located at 519 Kansas avenue. They sell furniture and stoves, matting and linoleum, carpets and curtains. They are staunch friends of labor and are deserving of our co-operation. We take great pleasure in placing their name prominently before our readers. S.

STANTON. Mr. Stanton is a dealer in all kinds of pumps and pump goods. He is agent for Canton Perfect Blast Furnaces. He does with experienced hands roofing, spouting and sheet metal work.

Mr. Stanton is located at 205 West Sixth street and has been the architect of his own fortune. We have no hesitancy in placing his name on our friendly list to extend throughout the coming year. CAPITOL BROOM WORKS. Among the many industries of Topeka is the manufacture of brooms by Wm.

Supple at 1234 Kansas avenue. He also does a jobbing business in broom corn and broom material. His attitude towards working men has always been just and fair and he is entitled to our support in every way. JOHN F. STANTON.

No more public spirited official holds forth in the state house than John F. Stanton, state architect. He is a gentleman of great ability and is too well known to need much comment. Workingmen will make no mistake in supporting Mr. Stanton for any position he may desire.

We take great pleasure in placing him on our friendly list. P. E. COOK. The above well-known carpenter and builder is too well known to need much eulogy in these columns.

He is a man whom it is a pleasure to endorse and working men will make no mistake in giving him their support and co-operation. Te is our leading carpenter and builder and is located: at 117 West Fifth street. His 'phone is Ind. 173. Call him up when in need of anything in his line and send trade his way whenever you can.

SANTA FE WATCH COMPANY. The successful jeweler has to have a mass of capacity for detail. The work of repairing jewelry is the most confining in the world. The above concern is one of the most successful in its line in our city. They have, by honorable and public-spirited methods of dealing, built up a large and substantial patronage, and are very popular with all classes.

Working men should co-operate with this store which is located at 106 West Eighth street. Let them repair your watches when out of order. MERCHANTS TRANSFER AND STORAGE CO. Clarence D. Skinner has certainly shown Topeka what can be done in the transfer and storage line when a man of ability is at the head of the company.

In the storage part of this company are private rooms, carriage storage and other facilities which go to making it a first class place in which to store goods. The storage rates are cheaper than rent and we advise our readers to support this concern to the fullest extent as the proprietor is very friendly to labor. THE PRUDENTIAL Insurance Company of America. This is one of the companies that has stood the test and when you want good old line life inusrance we refer you to "The Prudential." The local office is at 700 Kansas avenue, No. 8, Central National Bank building.

We take pleasure in placing this company on our friendly list, and ask you to give it your support. C. E. HUBBARD. Our aim should be to patronize home industry where it is possible as by SO doing we further our own interests.

C. E. Hubbard at 520 Kansas avenue, puts up fresh seeds and should receive our undivided support as he is a gentleman whose relation with labor has always been fair and just. LE CANDI. Another home industry entitled to our full support is Le Candi, conducted by W.

H. Batman, manager, at 821 Kansas avenue. They manufacture fine box candies, water ices, sherberts, and delicious ice cream, and handle al fine line of cigars, fruits, and confectionary. We take great pleasure in placing this concern on our friendly list. THE U.

S. CYCLE CO. The U. S. Cycle Company are located at 118 East Eighth street and are agents for the National Union and Eldrege bicycles.

These makes are well known and give satisfaction to users. One of these machines will ride for thousands of miles sometimes without needing repairing. Repairing is neatly executed at this place and as their attitude to labor is friendly we advise our readers to support them to the fullest extent. AGARD PLANING MILL. Our friendly list would not be complete if we failed to mention the above named concern who are most friendly to working men and are deserving their full support in every way.

THE KNIGHTS AND LADIES OF SECURITY. character is to place before our readers a attitude to the labor cause. By their expressed. It also shows their appreco-operation. We heartily accord these and ask our readers to support them to article looks as good as new.

Mr. Reynolds has many friends among the laboring men and is very popular. MOFFITT FURNITURE COMPANY. The Moffitt Furniture Company is certainly entitled to their full share of the union man's patronage. They are friendly in their attitude towards labor and have never done anything in the least antagonistic to the cause we represent.

They have a fine line of the best furniture in stock. The method of business is such that any working man can go there knowing he will receive a square deal. Very little extra charge is made for time payments. Some concerns bleed their patrons when they do not pay cash, but the Moffitt Furniture Company accord the same consideration to time as cash business. Mr.

Moffitt, the proprietor, is a most capable man and we wish him a continued era of success and popularity. TOPEKA SPICE MILLS. The above firm are wholesale and retail dealers in tea, coffee, Japanese goods, etc. E. D.

Giles Co. are the broadminded and public-spirited proprietors and to their executive ability and integrity is due their large business. They are located at 533 Kansas avenue and have both 'phones, No. 71. They are manufacturers of baking powder, pure ground spices, and flavoring extracts.

Keep this concern i in mind when in need of anything in their lines. Call at their store if you wish to see the best array of Japanese goods in the city. The attitude towards labor of these affable gentlemen is most friendly and considerate and working men will make no mistake in giving their fullest support to this enterprise. We take great pleasure in placing their name foremost on the honor list. THE DIBBLE GROCERY COMPANY.

The Dibble Grocery Company is an institution which workingmen should patronize to the fullest extent. They are wholesale and retail dealers in groceries and fresh meats and are located at 117 East Sixth street and 804 and 806 North Kansas avenue. Therefore there is no excuse for our North Topeka readers not supporting this company for they have a store right in their midst. Call them up on either 'phone if you want the best service together with low prices. THE STANDARD UPHOLSTERY CO.

The lines manufactured by this company are: Couches, davenports, divans, chairs, rockers: and mission furniture. They are originators of their own exclusive designs and if you want satisfaction you should purchase their goods. They are located at 130, 132 and 134 North Jackson street and their attitude towards labor is most cordial. The Standard Upholstery is guaranteed the best and working men should support this company. THE OVERTON MANUFACTURING AND ENGINEERING CO.

This concern is certainly a leader in its line. It does electrical construction work, model work, machine work, and sells machinists and electrical supphes at a moderate figure. Their gas and electric fixtures can not be beaten and they are in a position to do work at all times and their employes are experienced. Located at 111-113 East Seventh street. Call up 768 on the 'phone when in need of anything in their line.

CAPITAL HAND LAUNDRY. Would you like to go home each night and see your wife's face free from care? Would you like to see your house clean and neat? If so, send your laundry out. When you do this do not overlook the Capital Hand Laundry, located at 111 East Third street. Mr. G.

D. Olden is the up-to-date laundry. A. B. WHITING PAINT GLASS CO.

The A. B. Whiting Paint Glass Co. sells oils, brushes, ladders and painters' supplies. They also sell plate, ornamental and art glass.

They are located at 521 and 523 Quiney street. This concern is the largest and most popular enterprise of its kind in Kansas and is deserving of organized labor's cooperation. We should give our combined support to the Knights and Ladies of Security for many reasons, principally because it is a home institution, and one of the best in existence. It is a fraternal beneficiary society with headquarters at Topeka. It has over 55,000 members.

Has an equitable reserve fund. Pays partial life, and total disability benefits. The management comprise gentlemen of ability and integrity well fitted to handle the large volume of business such as is necessary with a society of this kind of national importance. Workingmen will be doing their duty to themselves and their families by giving their support to this well known fraternal beneficiary society. We take great pleasure in endorsing this society in our friendly list.

CAPITOL REAL ESTATE CO. No working man can afford not to accept the proposition offered by this concern to buy a lot in Walnut Park Subdivision for two dollars ($2.00) down and fifty cents (50c) per week. In case of sickness payments are suspended for eight weeks. This firm is friendly to labor and should be patronized to the fullest extent. They are located at 116 West Sixth street, and Messrs.

Wilson Neiswanger are the popular agents. R. 0. HILLIARD. We take great pleasure in placing R.

O. Hilliard, 429 Kansas avenue, on our friendly list. When in need of real estate, loans, insurance, and notary publie, call and see him. D. T.

GREGG. Our friendly list of attorneys would not be complete if we failed to mention D. T. Gregg, 517 Kansas avenue. He is a gentleman of ability and integrity, who is too well known to need further comment.

CURRIE WINDMILL CO. Another Topeka enterprise that is worthy of our endorsement is the Currie Windmill Company at Seventh and Holliday streets. Their attitude towards labor has always been just and fair. SAMUEL CUNNINGHAM. One of the grocers on the East side worthy of all workingmen's support, at least in that vicinity, is Mr.

Cunningham at corner Eighth and Lake streets. He has shown in many ways his kind consideration for all laborers and we gladly place him on our friendly list. JOHN E. FROST. Kansas land is one of the best possible investments.

John E. Frost in room 42, Columbian building, makes a speciality of Kansas land, and can sell you a farm almost upon your own terms. Go and see what he can do for you. He is a great friend of all working men and we gladly place him on our friendly list. J.

E. GALL. Mr. Gall does strictly a commission business in grain, provisions, cotton and stock at 110 West Sixth street, and if working men wish to deal in any of these commodities you will make 110 mistake in calling upon him. His dealings with laboring men have always been fair and honorable and we do not hesitate to place him on our friendly list.

TOPEKA GARBAGE CREMATORY COMPANY. The above concern with office at 121 East Seventh street and crematory at Oakland, does a business that is necessary to any city. Their business is set forth by their title. C. H.

Bowman, A. Butler and S. M. Evans are the owners. They are all gentlemen of standing and staunch friends of the labor cause.

Call them up when you can use them and give them your support. MULVANE MATHEWS. Foremost among Topeka's industries is the Topeka Automobile Cycle lately purchased by Mulvane Mathews, and located at 109 East Eighth street. These gentlemen have always been friendly to labor's cause, and we urge all good union men to patronize them. They are both gentlemen too well known to need much comment and we wish them success in their new business.

E. P. JORDAN. Working men will make no mistake in giving their patronage to E. P.

Jordan at 118 West Eighth street, when in need of anything in the line of electrical construction and supplies. He has built up a fine business by honorable and publie spirited methods and applying himself to his business. He is a hard worker himself and knows how to appreciate the working man's position. Give him your co-operation in every way possible as your confidence will not be misplaced and you will be furthering our cause..
