The canal which was opened at Chicago yesterday is about as wide as our river here west of Iola, but carries 300,000 cubic feet of a minute. Our reader will ate the vast difference. The Southern Kansas division of the Santa Fe does more business than any branch of the road in Kansas, as is plainly seen by the statistics, and one indication is the great number of trains going through Iola day and night. The Salvation Army is doing an encouraging work in Iola. They have open meetings each night on the street, and the big bass drum is the popular noise that attracts the people.

The open air testimonies also a feature among its adherents. The cement plant received a new rotary yesterday. To make cement in Iola is one of the biggest things in the race among citizens of manufacturing tendencies, and in this case Iola is proud of her cement plant and her 300 employes, all men who are paid for a man's work. Rosenberg's store has a good appearance, and since Mr. Rosenberg moved from his old stand he has much more room and a better location.

His holiday trade was immense all through the rush. Each and every customer was given thorough satisfaction. New goods wiil arrive next week. The big page advertisement of the Famous in this issue of the RECORD will be read by all with eager interest. Such business men make the town and meet with success and continuous increase in business.

Low prices, advertising and good goods will win always. Thousands and thousands of men fighting in the Philippines now are anxious to spend their next vacation (when relieved as a soldier) in Iola, the home of Funston, the world's field of gas and the cheapest place on earth to live. RECOrD 5 cts a week, subscribe. Every other item of news in some so called daily papers is bound to be a patent medicine notice. Such "'news' is what Iola people don't appreciate.

Good newspaper men are becoming SO now a days that in order to please their readers they can't afford to publish such stuff about patent medicines, because the readers see right away that it is a "sell." Don't you believe it. The Register advertised last evening that it had the "exclusive right to publish in Iola" a "new story" by the author of "In His Steps," entitled Crucifixion of Philip and says it as if it were doing its readers a favor in getting for them, the privilege of reading it before it appears in book form." This same story which they want to make people believe is new, was published in Chicago two years ago (1898) in book form, and sell! from 5 cts, to 25 cts, the whole a copy of which is in our office at the present time. The principal donor being the Santa Fe railroad company. The commissioner allowed the usual amount of bills this afternoon, being principally for officers saleries, and pauper relief.

A light would fill a want. Iola Chapter Royal Arch Masons will confer the Past and Most Excellent Master's degrees tonight upon W. A. Bickford and Solomon Winestrand. Iola Chapter Order of Eastern Star is receiving a number of new members and there is 110 reasoning why, the Chapter should not become one of the best ones in the state.

Horace Hobart and his brotherin-law, W. B. Clarkson have secured the Nickle Plate restaurant and will remodel and fit it up first class in every respect. This is a good location and we wish the boys unbounded success. The RECORD job office is SO rushed with work that it seems almost impossible to wade through it, but we are prepared to place an order for more on the job hook for any one who wishes same.

The boom boom of the blasting at the Cement Works and Brick Plant is heard every evening at about 5 p. 111. and a would think that the "Boers were attacking the British" south of town but it is the workmen at the above mentioned places blasting rock etc. The Ottawa Herald classifies its drunks and marriages as the same grade of misdemeanors, giving the record of Franklin county for the year 1899, as 174 drunks and 204 marriages. Whether this be intenried as a compliment for its peculiar brand of intoxicants or the peculiar make up of its marriagable people the RECORD will not attempt to say, but it is more than probable that the average suitor of Ottawa is unwilling to enter the army of Benedicts in a sober condition.

In Iola, where intoxicants and drunkeness are totally unknown, such a reflection on our young folks would be investigated by the grand jury. A MAN'S AD even can't find fault with our laundry work. The most severe scrutiny will only show how perfect it is and how superior to all other work in this line. Every direction you look in Iola gives renewed evidence of prosperity, thrift and improvement. New residences, business buildings and city improvements are rapidly beerected and constructed and the year 1900, upon which have only entered bids fair to be an epoch in the history of 'our flourishing and prosperous city. A. W. Howland, veteran farmer and told us today that there never was a better outlook nor prospects for the farmers and stock raisers than the present year.

Hogs, horses and cattle have increased in value more than 25 per cent over the prices of last year, and that the hog market is better than it has been for years. The prices being "better than two years ago at this date. Lumber dealers predictthat yellow pine lumber will advance at least one dollar a thousand by January 5th and that white pine will be even higher, and that by January 15 yellow pine be three dollars higher per thousand feet than the present price. The cause in the rise is attributed to the fact that the timber lands of the South are going into the hands of a few owners who can dictate prices to the mills. for presenting uS with jewel which we were the recipient of on the evening of St. John's day. KEENER THAN MANKIND. Illusions That Deceive Men Have No Eneet Upon Animals. "It's a singular fact," said a man in the show business.

"that as we call 'em, don't fool animals. I've seen that proved over and over again. A few years ago I had what is known as the 'Mystic Maze' at the Nashville exposition. It was simply a small room filled with mirrors, so arranged that you seemed to be in a narrow corridor, full of turns. It was very puzzling, and I used to get lost in it myself, but it never bothered my dog a moment.

He would run through it from end to end at full speed and never bump against a mirror. "1 saw something on the same line In Frisco not long ago. A friend of mine had an illusion called 'The Haunted You get in what seems to be an ordinary swing, hung in the center of a good sized room, and the thing begins to move. It goes back and forth and finally clear over the top -that is to say, it seems to. What really turns around is the room itself.

The swing stands perfectly still. It Is a good illusion, and when the room is revolved rapidly there never was a man who could keep his head in the swing. It seems as if he must certainly pitch out. and if the motion is kept up he gets deathly sick. But a pet cat belonging to my friend used to lie on the edge of the seat and never turn a hair, no matter how fast the thing was worked.

"The elder Herrmann told me that animals were never deceived by false table legs, built up with looking glasses and used in stage tricks. They always passed around on the other side. guess they must see better, somehow, than men." '-New Orleans Times- Democrat. BACKSLIDING INDIANS. Unsuccessful Attempts to Convert Them In Early Times.

In a report to the classis of Amsterdam on the state of religion in the New Netherlands in 1657, Rev. Johannes Megapolensis and Rev. Samuel Drisins made the following somewhat discouraging statement in regard to the efforts to convert the Indians. It will be noted that the conclusions arrived at by the reverend gentlemen in the first sentence of the extract were in the nature of a prediction which has been completely fulfilled: the conversion of the heathens, or Indians, here, we can say but little, nor do we see any means thereunto until by the numbers and power of our nation they are subdued and brought under some policy and our people show them a better example than they have bitherto done. "We have had one Indian here with us full two years, 80 that he could read and write good Dutch.

We Instructed him in the grounds of religion. He also answered publicly in the church and repeated the prayers. We likewise presented him with a Bible order to work through him some good among the Indians. But it all resulted in nothIng. He has taken to drinking of brandy.

pawned the Bible and became a real beast, who is doing more harm than good among the Argus. The West Virginia mountaineer lives very close to nature, and viewed from many standpoints the relation is characterized by pleasing amenities. Juicy berries refresh him along the road; nuts drop into his path; "sang" (ginseng), which makes one of his sources of revenue, reveals itself to his eye as he follows the cows to pasture; a cool brook springs up to quench his thirst when weary of following the plow; pine knots are always within reach to make light as well as warmth; mud and stones easily combine in his hand to shape a daub chimney and a trough dug out of an old tree furnishes a receptacle that is as good for dough at one end as for a baby at the other.Popular Science Monthly. Close to Nature. A Victim of Bad Seamanship.

The dean of Bristol in "Phases of My Life" relates the following: "From time to time I met at dinner a great friend of Lord Gage's, Admiral Boyle. Invariably when we met this admiral of the old school would come to me and say, you, sir, read the account of St. Paul's shipwreck? it is the appointed all I can say, as an old sailor, is that it any captain in her majes. ty's service handled his vessel as the captain of that ship did he would have been court martialed next day and dismissed the Acetyline Gets Tired. One pronounced feature in the use of acetyline gas is its tendency to lose illuminating power when left in reservoirs for several days.

A loss is often incurred after a rest of from 12 to 24 hours. Expect call this condition the tiredness of auryline, but they give no explanation ft as, nor do they suggest a practical cue. Valentines. Nearly all the comic valentines used in February in almost every part of the civilized world are made in Germany. in some parts of which country the work goes on from one end of the year to the other.
