It is supposed that every inhabitant is known, and every stranger watched, and every workman must be in possession of his billet, as every foreigner formerly had to possess his passport, bound to be shown when required. There is of necessity some re-laxion of former strictness of supervision; but compared with the freedom of life in the United States and Great Britain, the Parisians still main under police surveillance and espionage.

Preston and Isaac La Veen, editors of the Sunday Snn a paper published in this city, who we re taken to Brookfield Monday night' to answer a charge of criminal libel, returned to the city yesterday under heavy bond. they reached Brookfield they were confronted with half a dozen other warrants and consequently had to spend all day yesterday jetting bond. The City Council of that town has passed an ordinance prohibiting the sale of the paper ofi the streets. The Democrflt. We think it high time that the editors of that paper were brought to hook, They lived by appealing to that lower instinct of humanity, that feed on garbage.

The revolver of the courts of justice was sure to he their ultimate fate. They have been caught in their own snares, be confessed that the American detectives operators. Their Americans use such for the detection and crime. The French ion and. for the protection of honest and peaceable people such functions require special men and special training.

Some of them are at their own request of course, sent for a short time to penal servitude, and go through a certain period of the greatest hardship which any living being can endure for the sole purpose of becoming acquainted with the most rascally of the criminal classes, others are sent to live as thieves, with thieves in what Parisians call vlesquartiers eccentriqu.es de Par is Many of them speak other languages than their own, and do so with fluency; whilst of the latter not a few have picked up an excellent knowledge of English by loafing under orders of course, from their chiefs for some time in the neighborhood of Leicester and JSoho squares. We are told that Napoleon himself depended more on the Secret Police than on all his other ministers and officials for the, support of his despotism, and for maintaining the peace and order of the city and the people of France. Different detectives are employed to find out the perpetators of different kinds of crime. Thus one man may be a good hand at working out the why, the where, the when, and the by whom of a ease of murder, but be quite out of his element in trying to detect the particulars concerning a robbery. Again, if the plunder taken, consists chiefly of jewels or plateware.

there are detectives who are better up as to where the things are gone to and by whom they have been stolen than others, whose specialite, so to speak liesmqre with deeds, bonds, or other docurfents of the kind. A really good detective is looked upon by his superiors as a most valuable official, and if successful with the work put in his hands, is invariably paid a very handsome salary! But should one of the French detectives become known in this true gjharacter to the criminal class, his usefulness as a detective is considered to he at an end. The training of these men before they are considered as perfectly efficient is by no means a mat), ter to play or amusement. (to me continued in next)' issue.) James McNamara.
