-to get back to London, and, beginning a new and better life, to face my ruin like a man but the sight of your face chained me to the spot. I could not bear to part from you -I was powerless. I dare say, Miss Maitland, you think all I have said the mere emotional talk of a man of the world, accomplished in such matters; but, fortunately for me I have the means of convincing you of the sincerity of my words. By this morning's post I had a letter announcing to me the death of an uncle, to whose property I succeed. I am now a richer man than your father.

Will you come to me, -just as you are, without a penny? If you like, we will live in Manchester, and your father will stay with us I shall be proud to live under the same roof with such a man. Oh, my darling, do have merey on me! Don't be hard upon me! I can't part with you; you are the whole world to me!" The tears were in her eyes now, and her heart was throbbing fast. She felt how noble he was for having thus humbled himself before her, and her whole soul in response went out to him. She could not -she would have burst out crying if she had attempted to do so; but somewhere from the folds of her jacket there came a little hand, and it was held out in a half-penitent fashion towards him. He took it in his, and the compact was sealed.

6 You were awfully severe on me last night, he said later in the day, when they were alone in the drawing-room. "So I was; but I never said one thing," she remarked shyly. What was that he asked. "That I did not care for you- -because I did, you know," she added, with delicious naivete. Such was Henniker's downfall--that he, a man of family and high social position, should marry the daughter of a Manchester cotton-merchant! There are some people however who consider it was no downfall at all; and amongst such most emphatically is Henniker himself.

H. R. D. A Musical Sketch. From the Liverpool Brass Band News.

AN old major was walking along a road one day with an oaken staff in his hand, thinking about organizing a brass band in the next village, when he saw a sharp looking minor in a field digging beats. The old man said, You have scales there, why don't you weigh them." The young man said he would do so, and began to weigh the beets. Accordeon to that," said the old wag, your father andantino will have to act in concertinan endeavor to make both ends meet this winter." The boy said, "That's good, repeat it, will you?" The old man asked him why he did not water the beets every day to make them grow faster, and the boy said that too much water would only retardando them more harm than good. The old man took up his staff and said, "I'll go overture house and see your father, whom I have known for over forte years.

I was with him when he was Chopin wood for old Degouy in those days he was Abt to have strange crochets, such as keeping his Hatton in church, where he would Crouch down in the pew and go to sleep. He had a weak Bach, and used to rub it with Verdigris to cure it. Well, I'll be going. Good day." And the old man sloped. THE NATIONAL DANCE ALBUM.
