14 THE WICHITA POULTRY WORLD, WICHITA, KANSAS DIRECTORY Has Made a Record H. W. Schopf, the hustling secretary of the Wichita Poultry and Pet Stock Association; is a chicken fancier of the true blue. There is little about chickens, known by other people, which Mr. Schopf has not been able to study out for himself, or has read in his extensive study of the business.

As secretary of the Wichita Association he is now in his third term, and previous to his becoming secretary he served an apprenticeship of one year as assistant secretary. A. J. Waddell whose picture is printed above, is the Kansas vice president fthe American Buff Plymouth Rock club, and 'he is an enthusiastic member of organization. His only regret is that Kansas, a state which breeds so many grand specimens of the popular variety, should 'be one of the few states which lack the necessary number of members to procure a club cup, to be offered for competition at one of the leading shows of the state.

He is earnestly striving to increase the membership within the state, not only because would have the sunflower state show up well in the total membership, but also because he is well acquainted with the fact that membership in such an organization means much to breeders of all classes, whether they be novice or veterans. A letter written to him at 210 New York avenue, will procure for any Buff Plymouth Rock breeder a catalog of the club, as well as the necessary information for becoming a member. Kansas breeders should see to it that the state is not behind all the rest in point of representation in this well-known club. It is helpful to all who breed this variety. Chas.

sciiorF Since becoming secretary of the organization, Mr. Schopf has seen the association grow from a total membership of six, until now it is composed of over sixty members. This growth has been accomplished largely through the efforts of the secretary, and only those who have been connected with exhibitions of this kind are in a position to know how much depends upon the man who tills that position. As secretary of the Wichita association, Mr. Schopi has been responsible, to a large degree for the success which has attended the exhibitions given here during the past three years.

Each year has seen the Wichita show grow in point of size and importance, until this year, when the birds entered for competition numbered 1,000. Next year it is expected that, with the veteran I. K. Felch for judge, there will be at least 1,500 birds in the coops when the association opens the doors to the exhibition room. This means much work for the tireless secretary, but his fellow members consider him equal to the task and have the utmost confidence in his ability to bring the show of 1904 to a successful close.

That the Wichita show shall be the leading poultry exhibition west of the Mississippi is the desire of every member of the association, and it is largely through the work of the secretary that they expect their wish to be carried out. Secretary Schopf is a thorough poul-tryman, and in his busy life finds time to raise a few Partridge Plymouth Rocks, White Wyandottes and Buff Wyandottes. He is an incubator expert, and has hatched thousands of chicks for his patrons. Wichita show in January. 1st pullet on right scored 95J, wt.

The Kansas Legislature has passed the bill legalizing the Kansas State Poultry Association as a state Institution, and appropriating $1,000 annually for the use and benefit of the association. No appropriation made for years will be so much appreciated and for the amount expended will do so much for Kansas in the way of building up her live stock interests. Every farmer and breeder in the state in the years to come will receive the benefits accruing from this act. The bill was introduced in the House by Representative E. A.

Kramer, of Plainville, Rooks County, and in the Senate by Senator II. 13. White, of Mankato, Jewell County..
