POULTRY CULTURE 11 built up one of the best shows of the early fall, in fact with an elegant octagon building, lighted on all sides located in the fore part of the grounds SO that every one that goes to the fair is sure to go through the poultry building, the poultry show has proven to be one of the big features of the fair. As competition is always very warm at Hutchinson it has become noted as a good town for selling stock and eggs. It opens up the rich field of western and southwestern Kansas and northern Oklahoma. Breeders have exhibited from as high as eight states, at this fair, including such states as Texas, Indiana, Nebraska, Arkansas and of course Missouri, Oklahoma and Kansas largely represented.

This year Superintendent Randle is making a special effort to have a number of attractive displays as a sideline for the poultry department. He expects to make his department more than ever one of the leading centers of interest of the big fair grounds. A great many readers of Poultry Culture should attend this fair and, if possible, send a few birds to the show. There is no ter place to begin exhibiting than at a state fair, where you can meet thousands of interested people who want to buy poultry and eggs. Drop Mr.

Randle a card at Hutchinson and ask for a premium V. H. THIS MONTH'S COVER PICTURE. Harrison Farm, Hickman Mills, took up the breeding of White Indian Runner Ducks with the avowed purpose of developing the finest flock of White Runners in the West. How well Mr.

Harrison has suceeded along this line was shown last winter when judges at the Kansas City show pronounced his winning drake as the finest White Runner drake ever shown in Convention Hall. The cut on our front cover this month was made from a photograph of this drake. Note the splendid station and racy appearance of the bird. This drake shows the true White Runner type, and Mr. Harrison is to be congratulated upon producing birds of this quality.

He informs us that he is sparing no efforts nor expense to make his the finest flock of White Runners in the West. In this, Mr. Harrison is not alone in the field, as at least one other Missouri breeder and one Kansas breeder are each working toward the same end that Mr. Harrisan has set out to reach. But this is what makes the work interesting it's what makes "the game worth while." All will watch with interest the race of these ardent western breeders in producing racy White Runner D.

M. IT PAYS ADVERTISERS. That Poultry Culture pays advertisers is proven by what Jas. R. Snyder of Frazer, wrote us on April 14.

Here it is: "I am having a fine business now and am glad to tell you that Poultry Culture is doing me some good. In fact, it now stands second and I believe it will be first by the last of the month. I am a mighty busy man, especially in the spring. Run my large farm and stock business and often have 50 poultry letters a day." Mr. Snyder is a former Kansan, and in his younger days was a student at Kansas University, but his early business training and college education did not keep him away from the farm.

Instead it has helped him to make his farm and poultry business pay. He breeds S. C. White Leghorns and White Indian Runner ducks and is making money. MADISON SQUARE GARDEN'S NEW SECRETARY.

Hon. Charles D. Cleveland, Eatontown, N. the new secretary of the Madison Square Garden show, is taking to the work of the secretary of this big show with a vim and determination that characterizes Mr. Cleveland in all of his dealings.

He pledges himself to make this a modern up-to-date show in every way and a policy by which the best bird will win regardless of who shows it. Uniform and absolute enforcement of the rules and a spirit to meet exhibitors half way on any reasonable ground. He also plans to make certain amendments to the rules. The show will be held from December 31 to January 5. THIS MAN DISAGREES.

Roy Nixon, Route No. 1, Altamont, after reading the articles in May Poultry Culture on summer hatching wrote us as follows: You are putting out a fine paper, but say, among the farmers and their wives, who are the ones who raise the most of the poultry of the middle west, June and July chickens practically can't be, or at least are not successfully raised. They will not live, as a rule. Maybe you fanciers can raise them under your conditions. Now, in I know and people who try to raise them June July but they don't do it.

All we have to say to Mr. Nixon is that the people who have not been successful with summer hatched chicks do not know how to raise them. We positively know that June and July chicks can be raised, and what's more, they are being raised by thousands of people, call them fanciers or whatever you like, every year. Here is the way to do it: Keep the summer hatched chicks entirely separate from the old fowls and early hatched chicks, provide them with plenty of shade, give them the necessary amount of feed and water, and keep down the lice. That's all there is to it.

Now we will tell you why some people, especially farmers, fail to raise late hatched chicks. They allow them to run with the partly grown chicks, the latter trampling the little fellows and crowding them away from their feed. The little fellows are put up against the proposition of fighting their way and they are unable to do this against the larger and stronger chicks from the earlier broods. Take as much interest in the late chicks as you do in the early ones, and take care of them as we have mentioned above and they will live and D. M.

THE MID-SUMMER SHOW. The second International Poultry Exposition on the Million-Dollar Pier at Atlantic City, N. is announced to start July the 4th and continue until September. The success of the last year's show and the poultry interest that it aroused has caused the Poultry Item, who backed the enterprise, to put on another show, which is expected will be even more largely patronized than the first one. At Binger's Orpington Farm.

Early in June 1 spent a few hours at the home of G. H. Binger just at the west edge of Topeka and enjoyed looking at several hundred "Buffalo" strain Buff Orpingtons and the 20 matings from which these young birds were produced. Although Mr. Binger has been breeding good Buff Orpingtons for a number of years, his stock this year shows a great improvement over anything he has raised heretofore.

I realize that this is saying a great deal, but nevertheless it is true. Out of the entire lot of young birds I only noticed three, two cockerels and a pullet, that did not carry a nice even shade of Buff color. Really, this is remarkable, as the percentage of offcolored chicks in a flock of buffs usually runs pretty high. But when one stops to examine the birds used in Mr. Binger's breeding pens this year and notes the care with which they were selected when mated and also notes the cleanliness of houses and yards, it is not to be wondered at that the young birds show quality right through the entire flock.

With the exception of about 75, the chicks on the Binger farm were hatched early-a number. of the cockerels were crowing in May. Mr. Binger will be able to select a large number of cockerels and pullets from his early broods that will be prize winners at the fairs this fall. He expects to exhibit at a number of fairs, and will take out a string of show birds that will 'be the best he has ever placed on exhibition.

Mr. Binger's breeding yards are 10- cated in a large orchard and the young stock also has the range of the orchard. With the trees all heavily laden with fruit, the orchard enclosed with a neat-trimmed hedge fence, and hundreds of -colored Buff Orpingtons enjoying life in these ideal surroundings, one looks upon a scene that would cause most anyone to wish for a home in the country and a flock of Buff Orpingtons and feel that life is worth -G. More and Better Poultry for Kansas. (Continued from Page 8.) It is not necessary for our people to continue to send money out of the state, as all too many of our farmers are doing, in order to secure breeding stock of proper quality to meet their needs. These birds can be, ought to be, and will be grown in Kansas. So then the dream I would leave with you is that of purebred males heading every farm flock in the state, and within certain communities most of the males of the same variety mated to hens that have been selected for their great vigor and strength. The breeders, the packers and the college working together can do very much toward bringing this about.

Thirty-six brought $52. I would have made about $8 more 011 them if I had shipped to Kansas City, but it was not convenient for me to make the shipment. I am going to try to raise 200 capons this year." Forcing the Molt. One of our subscribers at Chanute, is interested in knowing how to force early molting. The usual system is to feed the fowls very sparingly for about two weeks, omitting all rich food from the bill of fare during that time, then at the end of two start a system of forcing by feeding liberally of the regular grains and mash rations, accompanied by meat, ground bone, sunflower seed, linseed meal, etc.
