THE RAMBLER'S COLUMN.

Comments upon Everybody and Everything, Anywhere and Everywhere. What a treat it is to learn tnat the city of New Orleans has had enough of prize-fighting and prize-fighters! Once again the newspapers have spread their feast of carrion for de graded eyes and once again the names of thugs and blacklegs have been exalted. What the visitor from foreign lands must think of America when he learns of these money made battles for money by money loving brutes, it is hard to tell! New Orleans will, the Ramb ler trusts, set an example in refusing to again entertain such sights, that all other places will follow. And be it understood that an old maxim ap plies here as in other things: "No money, no fight." The recent refusal of Banker Gage of Chicago to leave the counting room of his financial establishment in that city to serve as its mayor during the coming year, is to be deplored. It was the wish of a great number of the city electors that he should be a candidate, because they recognized him as a man of honest principle who would give them a clean administration during the period of the great World's Fair, But he declined to become a candi date; giving as a reason for his action that his business demanded bis whole attention.

No one has ever questioned Mr, Gage's standing as a good citizen, still, it does seem to the Rambler that there is an important element of good citizenship lacking in his make up, namely: self-denial. No man who has given service to his country but what has had to deny self. The missionary of early days, leaving home and native land that other countries might be christianized and civilized could only accomplish his work by denying self. The soldier who leaves his family with the thought that he1 may never see them again, denies self. The putriot acd liberator who give their lives for their country, a few wronged people deny themselves.

If every one at the call of duty were to do as Mr. Gage has done it would be bad indeed for the world. There is more in life than the carrying out of our own plans and the gratification of our own wishes, and the grandest work in the world is to do all the good we can to all the people we can whenever we can and wherever we chu, while we are here. Spare and deliver us, Bays the Rambler, from that curse of all curses, the professional officeseeker, but we may have men who, Hoca-tine, in the "good days of old," will be willing to give up all else "pro bono publico," at the call of duty. Talking of office-seekers, it is truly delightful to learn of the manner in which President Cleveland handles them.

Many of them are going home from Washington sadder and wiser men, "unwept, unhouored and un sung!" The Rambler as he now rambles around notices that it is now in order to make garden. Hoes, spades. rakes and seed of all kinds are in great demand. And although many who will make garden have done so time and again before, nevertheless, they will ask as many questions about what to plant and how to plant it as though they had never seen a garden in all their lives. It iB strange, but it is true.

But as you raise garden, please don forget toe weeds or thpy'U play mischief with your "sasa." And if you would have fair flowerH and grood fruit in the garden of your life, "keep out tbe weeds," says tbe Rambles, Correspondence Solicited. Wagoner Wrinkles. BY DAMON. L. P.
