The Bod-bullt homos of Kansas Though built of mother earth, Within their walls so huinblo Aro souls of sterling worth. Though poverty and struggle May bo the builder's lot, The sod-house Is a castle Where failure enters not. The dug-out l.omos of Kansas The lowliest of all Thoy hold the homestead titlo As firm as marble hall. Those dwellers In the caverns, lloneath the storms and snows, Shall uiako the desert places To blossom as the rose. The splendid hones of Kansas How proudly do they stand Amid tho fields and orchards, All o'er tho smiling land.

They rose up whore tho cabins Once marked the virgin soil, And are tho fitting emblems Of patient years of toll. (I od bless tho homes of Kansas From poorest to tho best The cabin ol the border, Tho sod-houso of tho west Tho dug-out low and lonely, The mansion grand and great, The hands that laid their hearthstones Have built a mighty State I For Stock Men. Southeast Kansas offers great inducements to stock men. The rich grass and short winters make the expense of raising stock much less than it is in the Northern states. Feed can be produced in abundance, and at a small expense.

Millet is found to be excellent feed for cattle, and it will produce from three to four tons per acre. Hogs, cattle, sheep, horses and mules are found to be very profitable. To those seeking comfortable homes where they can enjoy good health, and abundance of fruit, and re ceive large returns for their labor, Southeast Kansas offers the great est opportunities. Nowhere is intelligent efforts more liberally rewarded. Nowhere in the world can the farmer get so much for his labor as in her virgin soils.

Let him consider that with the richest soils and seasons from three to four months loneer than in the north, he has the whole wide rangej of productions to chose from and experiment in. Here the stock raiser has an ample competence for his little labor. Such are some of the many advantages offered the farmer to locate in Southeastern Kansas, the land of beauty; the land of plenty the land of health the land of provision the land of bread stuffs; the land of fruit the land of flowers a home that will be in name and in fact a sanctuary to all who will accept of it and a land that extends a cordial invitation and an earnest greeting to all who wish to link their fate with hers. To tho Manufacturer, Capitalists and Stockman, Coffey- ville offers extra inducements. Wo wish to state here, that no doubt many things in connection with our city have escaped our attention, and any persons or business omitted by us in this, will coino in for our next. To tho merchants and the Capi talist seeking a safe investment, tho home soekcr, searching for a place to plant bis "own vine and fig tree," we say, read this paper carefully and take a good, unbiased, impartial look at the accompanying map of Railroads leading to our city, and geographical situation of Coffeyville nuiu vyuitHtiu, oil. jjuiiib. Jjunvei.

(2 Memphis, and Kansas City, and then you will bo assured that we've not told half. To tho voudl' man. we say there are four things you come west. First A wife who wants to come with you. Second A little monov.

Third A stout heart, sobriety and willing ness. Fourth A tract of land, such as wo can sell you on lonir time, at a low figures, from among the many in our list. Thus, the foundation of your luturo happiness begins. Tho f'orego'ng comprises almost every business in tho city, as well as tho facts partaining to our coun ty. These have been presented, so far as wo aro concernod, in an impartial manner, and as fully as limited time and space would permit.

It has been our aim to loll nothing but clean, cold, unvarnished lacts. No hyperhole, nor extravagance has been indulged in, and much moro might be said regarding tho advantages heretofore mentioned. Good land can be purchased for from $6 to $80 per acre, owing to locality, quality and improvements. Tho truth ol the matter is, that under the spirit of speculation further west, improved claims are as high as some improved farms can be bought in this county. Horo there is not that rush and struggle that characterizes tho "wild and wooly west." Land8sell hero at a specified price, becauso it, is its real value, and not because the owners are sick ol their larms.

A large number aro non-resident owners, having bought lands as a sate investment. Then we say to our Eastern friends and all emigrants: Why pass It .1 1 an uiubu uu van LiiLicM it muueo- menls lo go west and wear out tho best part of life in getting tho country to the stage ot development that this is now in? All will bo made welcome. Those desiring sites for the erection ot Mills, Factories, Foundrys ai the kind arc requested to correspond with tho firm of Elliott Ro-ser, ol the Southern Kansas Land Agency, enclosing stamp, to insure prompt answers. This firm has on their books a large number ot farms of all sizes, for rent, sale or exchange, also a number of city lots and cottages, as well as the lands mentioned, which thoy will dispose of on the best ot terms, in fact in any manner to suit purchasers. Tho firm of Elliott Rosser, of the Southern Kansas Land Agency, will take pleasure in answering correspondence, buy, rent and sell property, and pay taxes lor nonresident owners.

They wil cheerfully show tho property on their books to all interested. The office of the Southern Kan sas Land Agency is on tho second floor of tho Coffeyville Journal Building. This paper is tho oldest newspaper io the city, is regarded as one of the leading and most pro gressive papers in tho counly, and is well supported by our citizens. The edito- is D. Stewart Elliott, formerly of Pennsylvania, a well known lawyer and the head of the firm of Elliott Rosber.

Parties seeking homes or investments are respectfully invited to call and make themselves at home while in the city. A desk and writing material is at the disposal of visitors with which to do their correspondence with their friends. ELLIOTT ROSSER, Southern Kansas Land Agency, (Journal Building,) COFFEYVILLE, KANSAS. THE CITY OF COFFEYVILLE. he thriving and progressive city ol Coffeyville, is located in ihe Southeastern portion of Mont gomery county.

It loo miles irom Kansas City, 387 miles Irom St. Louis. In tho near luturo direct lino to Memphis, Tennessee, and Fort Smith, Arkansas, will bring it within about the same distance of those important commercial cities. We have now entering the City, the Denver, Memphis Atlantic Railway, or as it. is more pro perl- designated now, the Denver, Memphis Hi, Atlantic Division ol tho Missouri Pacific Railway, the Southern Kansas and tho Parsons Pacific, with the prospective two mentioned above, thus making Ool-feyville one ol tiie most important shipping points lor cattie and pro duce, in the State.

Our Stuck men, and those of the Indian Territory avail themselves o. uie suncner ad vantages thus afforded them lo get their stock to the best markets of the land. The Southern Kansas and Parsons Pacific railroads have their terminus here. Ala distance ot one ioui'th ol a nine irom uie city limits, the VerdigriH river, with its excellent labilities lor water pow er, wends its wav from the North west to tho Southeast. On a beau tiful plateau between theso points, is situated the city of Coffeyville, called by many The Gate City, from its importance as a shipping pv'int, and being a base ol supplies for the Indian Territory, South of us.

It is surrounded as will be seen, by the most fertile ot land. On every side ol tho city, stretching lor several miles is the Valley of the Verdigris, a soil that is unexcelled, made up of a rich, black loam, and tully tho equal ol any land of any State in tho Union. No city in the Stale offers better inducements lor tho establishment of public works. The Verdigris river, in so close proxim ity, and abundance ot coal but a short distance south of ns, are guarantees of water and fuel, two im portant requisites that can be held out as inducements for manufactur ers. Tho immense number or nous shipped from here alive and shipped back as cured meat, for homo con sumption, is amazing, and is a guar antec, beyond any peradyenture, ol tho paying business of a pork pack ing establishment, should one bo erected at this point.

We have no manufactory for agricultural im plements here, though it would be a good place lor one. A Canning Factory would do well, and also Sash and Door Factory, in con nection with a Planing Mill. Quite a numbor of the employees ol tho threo roads nro located here, and a moro intelligent class oi citizens need not be desired by any one. A more intellectual, 5 this, we have but to ennumerate our churches and educational advanta- Wo have eight churches, with six resident ministers ol the different denominations, excellent well con- dueled Sabbath schools, with livo and active Superintendents in charge, Singing Schools, Lyceums, We have throe school houses one a fine hire brick with as good a (inrpH of I each era as any county in the Slate, presided over by ona nl the best educators in the Stale. The ca usual reader, though he runs, ma J' readily realize the effect of so many churches in any town or city ol the same number of popula tion. Tho minis ters are all men of the highest order ol intelligence, and labor early and late for the welfare of humanity, working in accord with each other for tlio grand cause of the Master The foregoing though in brief, wil indicate to the reader tho intellect pal and moral status of tho people ol our thriving city. In addition to tho loregoing wo have six large and elegant Dry Goods Grocery stores, three Groceries exclusively devoted to that line, three ftne Hardware es tablishments, three Flour and Feed stores, five Drug stores, six Hotels, thi ee Boot and Shoo dealers, two Saddler's shops, two Lumber and Coal yards, one Gentlemen's Fur nishing store, four Restaurants, two Banks, one of which is Tho First National and the other the Bank of C. The merchants and businessmen mentioned herein have large establishments and all carry a lull and excellent assortment of stock in their respective lines. From first to last, tbo business people of Coffeyville will be found to be of the most courteous character in their business transactions.

They aro equally as wido-awako in being up wttii the times in the quantity What We Are Here For. It is customary to write an editor's salutatory for the first number of a new paper. We are not particularly fascinated with that custom. Nevertheless, we feel in clined to say something by way of introducing our project. The Southern Kansas Journal and Land Buyer's Guide is not published "to fill a long felt want" for a live newspaper in Cof-feyville.

No such want exists. This community does not have an "aching void" that yearns to be filled by paper nnd ink. This paper is sent out upon the "sea of journalism" to gratify the wants and wishes of its proprie tors. We want to call the attention of persons in the East who concern-plate coming West, to the grand State of Kansas. We want to brir.g the superior advant ages of Montgomery County to the notice of capitalists and speculators.

We want to "sing the praises" of the "sunny corner" in which we have found a pleasant home. We want to advertise the attractions of Coffeyville, the most promising town in the Southeast ern portion of the State. We want to tell home-seekers and land buyers where to come to for bargains in farms and city property. We want to show the world at large that a real estate agent can tell the truth, be honest, and make money legitimately in pursuing his business. We want, last but not least, to blow the horn for Elliott Ros-ser's Real Estate Agency to a modest extent.

This is our platform: "No mis representations made to secure business or effect sales For references: Any persons with whom or for whom we have transacted business. Read the Journal carefully and come to us for details..
