State Hot THE PRIMITIVE CHRISTIAN. "The Secret Things Belong Unto the Lord our God: but Those Things Which Are Revealed Belong Unto Us and to Our Children 29:29. VOLUME II. WELLINGTON, THURSDAY, FEBRUARY 1, 1894. NUMBER 31.

The address of Brother C. A. Loney is changed from Stanton to Panama, Nebraska. "For, lo, the wicked bend their bow, they make ready their arrow upon the string, that they may privily shoot at the upright in heart." -Ps. 11:2.

Brother Pickerill is in a good meeting at Piedmont, Kan. Eight additions to date. We are rejoiced to learn this, as we have some true and tried friends and christians there. Brother Wm. Armstrong, of Mayfield, Kansas, showed his appreciation of THE PRIMITIVE CHRISTIAN by leaving on our desk three hard dollars.

THE PRIMITIVE CHRISTIAN bows and says, thanks, we will still visit you, Brother Armstrong. Brother Armstrong is a good, earnest christian we understand he has an excellent Bible educa- tion. The Kentucky Methodist evidently means business along a line where radical reform is needed. "God is neither a beggar nor a merchant. Therefore he raises money for church purposes he does not have to sell merchandise, or beg the devil's money.

Let every man give as the Lord prospers him, and church socials, fairs, suppers and other devices of the devil under the color of religion will be things of the past. Devices of the devil is pretty tough, but true. The one who places a carnal motive between the giver and his gift to the Lord is evidently not serving God. Think of To this we say, Amen, and are rejoiced to know that even some of the Methodist are learning some things along. "Help, Lord; for the godly man ceaseth; for the faithful fail from among the children of men.

They speak vanity every one with his neighbor: with flattering lips, and with a double heart do they speak: The Lord shall cut off all flattering lips, and the tongue that speaketh proud things: Who have said, With our tongue will we prevail; our lips are our own: who is lord over us? For the oppression of the poor, for the sighing of the needy now will I arise, saith the Lord, I will set him in safety from him that puffeth at him. The words of the Lord are pure words: as silver tried in a furnace of earth, purified seven times, Thou shalt keep them, Lord, thou shalt preserve them from this generation forever. The wicked walk on en ery side, when the vilest men are exalted." -Ps. chapter. OBITUARY-MRS.

J. W. SCONCE. Sarah A. Ellington was born in Madison county, Ohio, in 1831, moved with her parents to Clay county, Indiana, in 1843, and to Marshall, in 1868.

In 1871 she removed with her brother to to Shelbyville, where she lived until 1873, when she married J. W. Sconce, and moved to Moultrie county, where she lived for three years. In 1876, they moved to Mt. Ayr, and made this their home until 1885, when they removed to Harper county, Kansas, living in Attica, where she died at three o'clock Monday morning Jan.

8, 1894. She was baptized and united with the Christian church while living in Marshall, Clark county, and bad lived worthy ane consistent christian life. During her residence of nine years in our town she made many warm friends, whose hearts will be saddened by the news of her death. She was sister of Capt. J.

M. Ellington, of this city, who received a telegram on Monday announc-, ing her death. As no information of her sickness had been received, her friends here are not yet aware of the cause of her death. The sympathy of many hearts goes out to the family and relatives. -Mt.

Ayr, lowa, News. Such was the high esteem of our departed sister in Iowa, her former home. The removal from Iowa to Kansas lost her nothing in this respect, as she only added to rah merited respect by her aft- able conduct by drawing to her many warm and true friends. For wherever she lived she drew to her the warmest and dearest friends. Sister Sconce was a quiet and devoted christian until the day of her death, leaving behind her a life of devotion of which the world may be justly proud, and a life of hallowed and sacred influence to all her acquaintances.

It was our good fortune to enjoy the happy association of Brother and Sister Sconce for a season. It was an exceptional pleasant and quiet home for a weary preacher in a desert land. We were called by telegram to speak a word of comfort and warning to a large and weeping audience. We based our remarks on Rev. 14:13.

Showing the dead were at rest, and what a great comfort the works of such a christian was to the living, and how we all should rejoice to know our departed have left us such comfort. She well knew the toils and sacrifices of a preachers wife, as she was the wife of a pious and devoted preacher of the gospel. May the blessings of heaven rest richly upon this dear bereaved brother as he merges into the golden sunset of a useful life. Many were the tears shed, and sad were the farewells spoken to this departed saint, but all whe will live as she has lived may die with that ever dear hope of meeting where sad heart aches, and death never comes. "Be ye also ready." "Dearest sister thou hast left us, Here thy loss we deeply feel; But, 'tis God that hath bereft us, He can all our sorrows heal.

Peaceful be thy silent slumber, Peaceful in the grave so low, Thou no more will join our number, Thou no more our tears shalt know. Yet again we hope to meet thee, When the cares of life have fled; Then in heaven with joy to greet theeWhere no farewell thar is shed." THOMAS H. POPPLEWELL. AN EXPOSITION ON METHODISM. Methodism, as a human made institution, has improved somewhat in their pretended worship -in their name at least.

I learn since I came to this country, that there is a body of people here calling themselves Free Methodists and are even with original brethren in their foolishness in getting religion, too. Whenever they find the weak and unlearned in the Bible, there is where they get the most followers. We learn by reading tle Word: "And ye shall know the truth and the truth shall make you free. And here I will tell you, my Methodist friends, that none only who know the truth -the loyal disciples of Christ know what it is to enjoy this blessed freedom; all others are in bondage to some human made institution, unknown to the Word of God, showing their disloyalty and dissatisfaction with what is written, by adding to and taking from, what is revealed from heaven. The plan of redemption to save poor fallen human, and are deceiving themselves.

Paul, the great apostle to the Gentiles, has given the necessary warning. "Be not deceived, God is not mocked." (See Gal. 6:7.) See to it that your worship is not solemn mockery. And just how men can persist in their nations and feelings about what is written, instead of studying to show themselves approved unto God a workman that needeth not to be ashamed, rightly dividing the Word of Truth, is a mystery to me, unless they love popularity and money more than their own souls and the souls of others. It is evident from their teaching that they do not understand properly what the division of truth is.

Their teaching and attempted worship is all confusion, yet they are a very zealous people. But their zeal is not according to knowledge, having not submitted themselves unto the righteousness of God. And for fear your preachers will fail to teach you the proper division of the Word. I will tell you, the Patriarchal age lasted 2,500 years, and you well know we are not living in that age; and from the end of the Patriarchal age to the end of the Jewish age, 1,500 years, and closed at the setting up of the Kingdom or Church of Christ on the day of Pentecost. We are not under the Jewish age, but we are under the Christian age--the greatest and grandest age or blessing ever conferred upon the human family- and the Church of Christ is the grandest institution on earth and will ultimately prevail over all human institutions.

Then they will be banished in shame and confusion from the presence of the Lord and the glory of his power. Too late then to repent. So then value your souls and flee for refuge. Make haste and delay not, for the time is short- -now is the time. "Today if ye will hear His voice harden not your hearts.

And blessed is he whosoever is not in me. -Matt. 11:6 and Luke 7:23. In my next I will show the proper division of the New Testament or plan of redemption. P.

J. LENDERMAN. THE PRIZE OF THE HIGH CALLING. In Phillipians 3:4 Paul wrote to the church and made mention of the prize of the high calling of God in Christ Jesus, informing them that he pressed toward it. And in order that he might be successful and obtain the prize, he would "forget the things reach forth unto those things which are before." Now the things behind or those to be forgotten, are of the world.

Such as he speaks of in Ephesians letter, 2nd chapter verse 3, where he says, "Among whom we all had one conversa tion in times past, fulling the lust of the flesh, and the mind, consequently were in every sense worldly. And such being contrary to the divine nature were sinful, and being a weight must be laid aside, if we would run the christian race successfully. Therefore, he would tell us to forget those things, or at least not indulge in them. That the things of this nature although of earthly gain he counted, but lost the excellency of the knowledge of Christ. And in order to this high attainment, it was necessary, that he should be found not in his own right eousness by the law, but through faith the righteousness of Christ.

And that he might know him, and the power of the resurrection, and have fellowship with him. He should to a certain extent partake somewhat of his (Christ's) suffering. There fore, he must conform unto his death. And to do so he must die unto sin; that is, he must crucify the flesh with the affections and lust, and that he might be a new creature he must put on the new man, created in Christ Jesus, which new man is one of righteousness and true holiness. Now, as he had died to sin, and while dead he must in order to imitate Christ's death he must be buried in the liquid tomb.

Because, after Christ had died he was laid in Joseph's new tomb. Therefore no one can imitate the Savior's burial, except he be laid in the tomb. And as Christ a- rose to die no more so should we arise from the tomb of water a new man to lead a new life. We have now changed our state through faith and obediance to the law of adoption, and in view that this state is only one of preparation for one of higher and superior-yes, a holier and happier state. And as we are taught to make the apostle our example we hear Paul saying that his great desire was to be able attain the blessing of the just in the final resurrection from the dead.

And now he warns us that he had not as yet obtained the coveted prize. But that he might do SO he would forget those things behind, and by a faithful life would press toward the prize of eternal life which is the gift of God. through Jesus Christ our Lord. From the 15th, verse of this 3rd, chapter of the conclusion of the same, Paul ad- on 8th.
