The absence of the rough, the drunken orators, and the boisterous hoodlum, is one of the worthy features of the prohibition meetings. The exercises are always opened by prayer and song. God is recognized as a leader, and to Him they appeal for assistance in the great work before them. With a truly moral object to accomplish, the reverence of a Supreme Being as a standard bearer, for the protection of home and country, nothing but a final victory can possibly result in the near future.

Mile-ham is a son of the postmaster at Topeka and has for some time been in this city in company with a woman of a questionable reputation about whom the stabbing affray occurred. Weidman is a popr fisherman and in poor but for all that he has so far received justice notwithstanding the fact that poor people often have to suffer when a rich man or a man in position would be acquitted and considered by some a great hero. Let everybody who wants a straight prohibition ticket turn out and help select one that will win. Douglas county gave over 1 100 majority for the amendment. It is a prohibition county, and yet the will of the people is disregarded and the law is trampled under foot, through the negligence of our county and city officials. Is it not time to call a halt and inaugurate a new order of things? Voters of Douglas county, fathers and mothers, what are you going to do about it? The crop prospects are poor and the outlook for winter to those who have to depend on their work for a living is not encouraging. A very expensive habit some have is to patronize every little variety show that occupies the opera house.

The money spent that way if carefully invested in something for winter might be the means of preventing a scanty meal. We don't denounce a good troupe but merely advise. I believe the present law in regard to giving public instruction with reference to the use of narcotics and stimulants is one that will do a wonderful work for the cause of temperance." Jesse Harper, the distinguished labor reformer, spoke to a large and enthusiastic audience on the street last Tuesday evening. His subject was ably discussed in a way that can't help but convince. The absence of abuse was one of the admirable features which certainly is the best way of educating the people up to that standard which he desires to impress upon the people.

Mr. Harper is an able speaker, and perfectly familiar with his subject, although age is showing on him it has not in the least effected his memory, speech or eloquence. A more attentive throng than that which listened to him has not been seen in this city for a long time, and the general verdict of the people is that he made many friends for the cause he labors to build up. Our Prohibition friends of Lawrence, are establishing a new paper there, to be known as The True Citizen. It will be full of prohibition news and will strengthen our cause in Douglas county and Central Ks.
