Wilson Purdy of Glencoe township, died in St.

Francis hospital in Wichita, Wednesday April 10th aged about 05 years. Mr. Purdy came to Butler co uuty in the fall of 1885 and located in Rosalia township on the old Walters farm, After several years residence th ere he sold to George Hall and moved down on Little Walnut in Glencoe. He was a man with a history. For years he was a sailor and not only made several voyages around the world and to foreign ports but, for a 6hort time lived in South America and the Islands ol the Sea.

He was replete in stories of incident and adventure and for hourH the writer has been entertained with them. At the outbreak of the war, he enlisted and served faithfully in yarious capacities until ita close. This brings to mind that but a few months ago he brought the Editor a portion of a set of Masonic Jewels which he found in the road, while on a march through Tennessee and they are now in the office nafe. He had repeatedly tried to find the Lodge to which they belonged but failed. It would have been a source of great satisfaction to him could he haye succeeded.

Capt. Purdy was a good man, a true friend, a kind neighbor, loving and indulgent father to his motherless children and an enterprising citizen. The children who by his death are orphaned may be proud of his record as a man and soldier and feel that all who knew him will honor and revere his memory: He was taken to Iowa for burial. Look at them, Guaranteed' Salary YEARLY established this Free Niagara, and the fifteen years that have elapsed since then have given ample timo to demonstrate the efficiency of the plans adopted for the restoration of Niagara to that magniiicant state of beauty and sublimity which it today possesses. In no place in the world is there another free park so glorious in its wealth of fascinating beauty as that within the confines of the New York State Reservation at Niagara Falls. Every foot of it is wondrously beautiful. At every turn there is some new beauty to delight the visitor, and shaded seats afford oppor-t unity for rest and a drinking in of the sublimity that is everywhere about. Those who have not visited Niagara Falls since the State took possession of the park and islands about the falls will no longer know the place.

Every unsightly structure has been removed. Where once was heard the hum of mills and machinery, trees shade beautiful walks and driyes. The spirit of industry has been removed elsewhere, and in all parts of the State Reservation there is a peaceful atmosphere that cannot fail to give pleasure to every visitor. There is no annoyance from eager solicitors, for this cla-s has been carefully excluded from the state lands. Watchful caretakers direct visitors wherever they may wish to go, courteously answering all questions in a manner that will enlighten all.

Never are people so alone with God and Nature as when strolling about the Niagara Reservation, and there is no reason why the enjoyment should not be complete. It is this delightful spot that is within an hour's ride of the Fan-American Exposition, and the Falls of Niagara are destined to be one of the very enjoyable features of a visit to the Niagara Frontier. For more than a year the commissioners of Free Niagara have been preparing for the coming of the Pan-American crowds. Between the mainland and Green Island, a beautiful concrete arch bridge with three rock-faced spans is being built, while connecting Green Island with Goat Island there is another new bridge of similar design and beaut j'. New bridges have been built between Goat Island and the Three Sister Islands, the impro -ement requiring a large expenditure.

But New York State recognizes that the Pan-American crowds from the east, west, north and south will be her guests, and it is her intention to suitably protect and care for them while at Niagara. This Pan-American Exposition is the greatest event of the kind ever held in the Empire State, and the reputation of the people of tho state, fthe greatest in the Union, is at stake this year. In summer time the free park and its islands at Niagara are truly grand, a fact well attested by the million or more people who travel there yearly. This year the facilities for enjoyment will be exceptionally good, and all who attend the great Exposition will rejoice ov er the nearness of the Niagara act. Teachers Examination.
