The destruction of stock, crops and other property in Chautauqua county is estimated at $500,000. The streams were higher than eyer before known. Many bridges along the Southern Kan- as railroad were washed out, besides other great damage to the road, and it will to several days yet before the bridges are all fixed. Concerning the loss of life in Elk and Chautauqua counties, the infield Tribune says Mr. Albright know of the death of eleven persons and the probable injury of many.

The entire family of Mr. Witt was drowned, 'us old Mr. Green and four men who were camping in a corn crib on Big Caney. It is thought that probably 2ii to 40 lives are lost on Little Caney. Many who escaped with their lives will bo completely bankrupt and ruined." The damage in Cowley is considerable.

C. A. lives juat south of Torrance, lost 120 head of hogs, and John Maurer was driven from home and much of his pioperty destroyed. It is impossible for the News to mention all who suffered even con siderable loss, but Cowley has reason to be thankful that she escaped as well as she did. Every incorporated town should, have on hand some public work, such as breaking stone, sawing wood, or work ing the highway, as the weather would permit.

Then when a tramp strikes the town, he should not be given a bite to eat until he earns it by the sweat of his brow. Introduce him to the stone pile, vvood pile or highway. It's a square No man should be turned away hungry who -will work for a meai, but if they, refuse to do so, they undoubtedly should be chained up to a post, decently flogged and then run put of town. We don't believe in refusing the hungry bread, if they are willing to toil and earn it and if unfortunate cir cumstances have deprived them of the means of earning a living, let each town through which pass give them temporary employment until they reach steady work. This kind of charity no doubt would have a tendency to check the tramp business.

Who hath dried codfish Who hath boxes of sardines Who hath boxes of cigars Who hath remnants: of calico that are faded and are out of style He that hoardeth his scanty supply of filthy lucre and will not as much as advertise in a newspaper. Behold that man and pass him by, for he hath become an ob ject of little notice. He hath- become as a broken iish-horn after the cam paign. His ways are dark, like unto the countenance of defeated. of that and go not into his dusty place.

Exchange- Last Tuesday while a number of girls were in the kitchen at the hotel, one of them broke an egg, tho inwardness of which bobbed up serenely in the shape of a chicken in a slop-bucket. Setting a plow just right, and adjusting gears so that Bhouldera and backs of horses will never- hurt, are worth a thousand fold more to the country than knowing how to pose in a parlor.
