The alarm was not given until the flames had made a good showing toward a total destruction of the building; but within four minutes from the first tap of the bell the fire company had a stream of water turned on, and in five minutes more the fire was knocked completely out.

It was the quickest work of the kind we ever saw. The family saved most of the household goods, but the building was badly damaged. It was a three-room frame house belonging to the Angel 1 Mathewson Loan Company. Columbus, Star-Courier. The residence of R.

Plummer, 7 miles north-west of this city was burned to the ground last Sunday morning, with a portion of contents. Mr. Plummer was quite a distance from the house feeding his stock, and did not discover the fire until alarmed by a neighbor and the fire had gained a great headway and it was useless to try to save the building. Mrs. Plummer was quite sick at the time and had to be carried out wrapped in bedding and sustained a severe shock, from which she has not yet discovered.

The building was insured for $400. Md. Valley Herald. Mr. Chris Daley, one of the early settlers of this section, died at his residence south-east of this city, last Sunday evening, the 19th, of lung fever, aged 91 years.

Mr. Daley settled here in 2870, was a very hard worker, an honest upright man, a kind neighbor and friend. He lived a bachelor's life, and had no relatives here to look after him, He has a nephew living in Macon, Georgia, and by request and according to instructions the remains were embalmed and shipped to that place last Tuesday. Mr. Daley leaves a good farm of 240 acres and considerable personal property.
