When the shares reach par they are cancelled, for it is supposed that all have been borrowed on, and that the loans have then all been paid up; but experience has proved that all the members are not borrowers, and no provisions are made for perpetuating the shares. The capital stock, according to law, is prospective. The monthly installments paid on the shares, represent part of the saving feature. The interest paid by tlie borrower is another. But a we ever have anotner sucn a cnance. ousiness must stand aside, We can't ol-ford to miss such chances iust because kept in the treasury, but is loaned out every month on paid up shares, or oi improved real estate, or to improvi tlie same. Those members who do noi borrow, pay monthly on the install ments on their shares. The borrower pajs both his installment and interest monthly. This divides all members into two classes called investing and borrowing members.

In nioe't of the well associations the members are, and should be, both to fulfill the lawful purposes of these associations. The earnings' are credited up to the shares of stock, (issued or not cancelled,) quarterly. This is really a dividend but is not paid out then. The shares issued first reach par first, and aro then cancelled and new shares issued in their stead. To the investing members a final dividend is declared when their shares mature and all their money paid in is withdrawn.

It is found that by this method of savings ind loans that money doubles in seven or eight years. The borrowing mem-oers have their loan papers cancelled as well as their shares, and then they can sing 'The year of jubilee has ilow the earnings in these associations can increase so rapidly is a mystery to the people familiar with simple interest only. Not only is there a steady stream of money loaned every month at simple interest, but in the subsequent months tlie interest is loaned; in fact, the interest and part of the principal is compounded monthly. This is vhy the shares mature so rapidly. We ompound it or get inter st on interest, md all members participate in these irolits; but to each borrower it is only iimplc interest.

It is easy to underhand that with a large income that the golden ball will increase more rapidly iy these monthly accretions as the cars go on. An association that ath-ts up such savings for its membership md still lends a helping hand to all (orrowers, is truly founded on wise, reaching financial principals. This is why these associations aro so lopular, and aro steadily growing in avor. They cultivate frugality and a dsposition to save. I am deeply im- ressed with this fact, that it 1s much asier to spend than to save.

The old jdage, "to err is human," I would change it to read, to spend is human, to save divine. I am pursuaded more and more that if the many advantages of these associations were clearly understood that all classes, from the poorest to the wealthiest would secure their help and improve the chance they offer for themselves or friends.
