All these goods are cold here, he says, less 5 per cent, and now the question is where does the'money come from to buy them. The whole produce of the farms, all the products of the.

United States, are less than the goods are worth which he says is sold to the people every year 1 Now Mr. Haskell's deductions from his quotation are rot, and of the most contemptible kind. The products of agriculture are valued at what they are worth in the open markets of the world. There is no fictitious to them by act of congress. These manufactured goods on an average would not bring as much in the open markets of the world by an average of 40 per ceut, as the value put on them by the "statistician" at Washington.

Eight billions is their valao with the tariff added. A purely fictitious value; and no It Is always best io pursue a tmigbt-forward, consistent course. When trickery in politics is once resorted to, the people become stispisious and are apt to loose all confidence in the trickster in future campaigns. Bom upliolsleiy a Last Thursday we were "directed" to fall into the ranks of the independent movement by a very presumptions striker for Kurtz, and threatened with being if "we did not obey the command. We had this to say upon the subject: "This is not an independent organ.

The paper is devoted to the best interests of the town of Augusta and the Democratic party audits principles." Our money is invested and our efforts will be directed towards securing good dividends upon the capital tee engage, and that it will be a very cold day when we involve ourselves in the complications incident to the disintegration of the Republican party; that we will advertise for the advice and counsel of onr political enemies when we want, it, and sacrifice party principle for the benefit of some sore beaded pap sucker, when we haven't got anything else to do. Chariet Buudruin, hope it may not be to criticise the conduct and EARDAEE, Stoves andTinware AUD The Convention. The Butler County Democratic Central Committee, acting in its representative and authoritative capacity, in behalf of the Democratic party, and in the interest of Democracy, will call a straight Democratic County Convention, to be held at some convenient place iu the county. The call will be in harmony with the wishes of Democrats throughout the county. Let it be borne in mind by the members of our party that there is strength in harmony. Democrats have everything to gain aud nothing to loose by maintaining party organization in every department of government and every political subdivision.

Let us adhere to our principles stick to our party let ns not sacrifice the first nor abandon the latter. There is nothing to be gained by entering into alliances with the enemy. Let us profit by past experience and be united. It is repugnant to Democratic usage and Democratic doctrine to compromise. Our principles are undying and being so are worth advocating, and whatever is worth advocating is worth contending for to the bitter end.

There is just now an effort being made by a few dissatisfied members of the opposition to hoodwink Democrats into fusion an alliance both obnoxious and senseless. Remember overhaul the political records of any one, but if forced to itit will be done with a well sharpened scalpel. wer's ndJUion to the eity of but it is not what the people of cans to abandon their organization, there is no cause for Democrats to abandou theirs; while conceding their right to engage in revolt and indulge in contention and strife which may lead to the dissolution of the Republican party, it is the duty of Democrats to put forth sincere aud united effort. There is nothing to be gained by practicing frand. We have suffered- defeat for two decades, conscious that we were right aud with hopes of ultimate success. Let us remember that the Republican party of Kansas is divided upon a question of vital importance, and that the breach in that organization may lead to a long sought and long hoped for Democratic victory. Let us not throw away the vantage gained in the late contest at the polls.

Let us not permit ourselves to be blindfolded by the bandages of sinister plausibility. Let us not commit ourselves to the support of new schemes that are without principle and have, as the only object, the elevation into office of such as have become obnoxious iu one or the other, or both of the two "great parties of the country. Let us stand firm, as we have been hopeful let us be wise as we have been patient. I Now, Mr. Haekell has all these figures; the people have not. It is no mistake of the census people, but it is plain misrepresentation on his part. Thus far we have accepted Mr.

HaekelPs figures as to the and $8,000,000,000 which he professes to talk about. The trade of the whole world is less by $1,000,000,000 than the which he says tbe industries of this country produce yearly. Will he kindly give us authority for these stupendous figures? Can it be possible that this member of the United States congress has drawn on his invagination for his facts? For the sake of the argument we have accepted his figures, and have shown that, with figures of hie own choosing, his arguments have not the slightest foundation to rest upon. The Times proposes to push this argument with Mr. Haskell to its final analysis.

We have quoted above from the only acknowledged authority, the census returns of 1880. Will he have the goodness to name the "Washington statistician" to whom be alludes? The good seed planted by the Times in Kansas during the past year is beariug fruit. The great question of free trade is being discussed by the Kansas press, and it is talked of at every fireside and at every social gathering of the people. At the next election it will occupy the speakers at the various.political meetings, and it will be a conspicuous feature in the platforms. There was never a question which came home so closely to men's business, wlnVh is so closely interwoven with the every day life of families as this. Mr.

Dudley C. Haskell, representative of the second district of Kansas, was a member of the ways and means committee in congress last session, and he was, so far as he was abi, the advocate and the apologist of protection. He is now out iu the Kansas newspapers in advocacy of khis views and in defence of the economic- doetrine a which have been so rudely assailed. Mr. Haskell quotes or proposes to quote from the statistician at Washington, as to the relative values to the country of agriculture and manufactures.

It is a favorite mode of argument with Mr. Haskell. He did it in his congressional speech, and although set right then on the question he repeats the statement again oyer his name in the Lawrence Journal. Ho says: "The statistician- at "Washington estimates the agricultural production of the United "States for the year 1880 at the- manufacturing "productions of the same year at "$8,000,000,000." ill, Haskell endorses the statement without qualification and without analysis, and assumes that manufactures are of more value to the people of Kan. gas than agriculture.

Nov how about these figures? There are about two and a half millions of persons, msn women and children, engaged in manufacturing, and if this statement is to be taken without explanation their earnings wouldainount to 43,200 apiece 1 This is just exactly what Mr. Haskell eayf he puts the statistician' N.
