Saturday We all like our change of base very much and think this a greatly preferable neighborhood. We do not have that distressing little yellow flag, with its tale of terror and death, always before our eyes, but instead are surrounded by fellow steamers from all lines, who are, like us, free from any plague and whose passengers, like our own, are bound only to pass the time (five days they tell us now) as pleasantly as possible. Fort Wadsworth and Fort Hamilton guard us on either hand. The shores are beautifully green to our unaccustomed eyes, and the scene varied enough and our company jolly enough to keep us entertained for several days to come. The harbor last night was a sight never to be forgotten, one that beggars all description with its fleet of brilliantly lighted vessels, its sail boats and steam yachts scurring under our very bows, and the distant city lights, with the great Bartholdi in the foreground, shedding her wide radiance, and Brooklyn Bridge, like a sparkling string of diamonds stretching from shore to shore, and over all the full moon rose out of the city, "behind the dark chufch towers," a glowing ball of heat.

SCflR feCKLER, "Some women in marrying demand all and give all; with good men they are happy, with base men they are the broken-hearted. Some demand everything and give little; with weak men they are tyrants, with strong men they are the divorced.

Some demand little and give all; with congenial souls they are already in heaven, with uncongenial they are soon in their graves. Some give little and demand little; they are heartless, and with them there is neither the joy of life nor the peace of death. Every bachelor is really the husband of an old maid. For every vsingle man carries around within him the spirit of a woman to whom he is more or less happily wedded. IN QUARINTINE. Friday, Sept. 9. our sensation this morning upon finding ourselves at anchor with all our predecessors and sister boats of the Hamburg line the Normania, the Rugia, the Moravia and the Scandia all flying that terrifying little yellow The excitement was so great and the contradictory reports so many that no one had time to notice how perfect the weather was and how lovely the harbor looked with its early morning sun and myriads of white sails dancing on the blue water. All day the excitement has ebbed and flowed and reports start from nothing, since there is nothing more substantial for them to start from than some imaginative brain, for as yet we have been let severely alone and know absolutely nothing of our prospects for a long or short quarantine; indeed we do not.

even know who has whipped, Sullivan or Corbett. We are like Bellamy Fuller's heros come back to life, and have just about as little notion of what has taken place in this great world since we left it, nearly two weeks ago. It is all doubly tantalizing because we are so near our own dear native shores, "so near and yet so far." Indeed if only the wind were in the right quarter we might manage to talk to the Nomania's passengers we have dragged our anchors and drifted so very near to her many times this forenoon but, alas! the wind blows its own sweet way, and we poor quarantined mortals have no recourse, but must wait patiently for official news and the New York papers. 2 p. m.

Friday. The doctors have kindly condescended to look us over and give us the soothing information that we will probably have ten days, possibly twenty (it will depend solely upon that great potentate, Dr. Jenkins) in spite of the fact that the Wieland has neither steerage nor intermediate, only first class cabin passengers aboard, a clear Bill of Health, and was fumigated with every ill-smelling compound manufactured, before leaving Hamburg. The New York Sun sent us a couple of hundred complimentary copies of its morning issue, which were fairly devoured by a ravonous public, and we now begin to realize the anxiety of our people, who have known all these days what has awaited us and have imagined us all buried at sea, or at best in the midst of a plague-stricken shipboard of people; surely "Where ignorance is bliss 'tis folly to be wise." We have enjoyed our crossing immensely and have not known a fear. Everything after all is comparative, and we are rejoicing to be aboard the Wieland, rather than our KOCH GROCERS, Tel.
