PARSONS, KANSAS, SATURDAY February 28, 1874. The I. O. O. F.V of Parsons intend to celebrate the anniversary of their order on Friday, April 21th.

Preparations are being made for the largest celebration ever held in Southern Kansas. Several of the brightest odd fellows in the State have been secured to deliver addresses on the occasion. We will give full particulars in our next issue. "Under the Gas Light" is billed for Saturday night by the Simon Theatrical Troupe, and will be the benefit night of Senator Simon. This is one of the best troupes traveling and have complimented our city With a long and brilliant season, and the "sons and daughteis of Parsons" should fill Hews' Hall to the utmost of its capacity as a testimonial to this talented combination.

Saturday night will end the season here, and it may be a long time before an opportunity is offered to witness thi3 beautiful play with such a brilliant troupe. G. G. Grady's Great American Circus and Free BalloonjShow, will exhibit in Parsons, Friday, March, 27th and at Independence, Kansas, Saturday March, 28th, 1874. During the past winter this great organization has been thoroughly equipped and reorganized and many new features have been added.

In addition to the mammoth circus troupe which gave such general satisfaction during the past season through out he western country, arrangements have bcjn made with several of the brightest stars of the arena Gand Gratuitous Balloon ascensions will be made ch day from the show Grounds, free to all, presenting the most thrilling daring and novel display of Areonoutic skill ever witnessed on the Americ Continent. Prof. Eurham will actually make the ascension daily, with the mammoth Air Ship, "Excelsior," and doing away with the basket or car, will ascend, clinging to a single trapeze bar, giving in full view of all, one of the most gra eful and astonishing feats performed by the most skilful trapeze performers. This grand and imposing spectacle was hailed elsewhere by immense crowds as the most intensely sublime exhibition ever witnessed. Local Enterprise.

As some people cannot fathom the meaning of the term "local enterprise," we copy the following definition from an exchange, for their benefit, and recommend its careful perusal: "If you can think of anything that can be done to beautify or build hp your town, go and do it; don't fight the laying down of a new side-walk, because you have to pay your share of the expense; keep your capital at home; patronize home industries: help your own merchants to sell more, so that they may sell cheaper; always get your work done your own town if possible; subscribe and pay for your county papers, don't steal or borrow the reading of them. If you follow these suggestions, and your town does not improve and build up, it will not be your fault. There is much in the commercial sit nation to inspire confidence in the future of the agricultural and all the legitimate business interests of the country there is still a foreign demand for our surplus cotton and cereals at fair prices and the South has about 1,750,000 bides of cotton yet to market, while the West has many millions of bushels of grain to spare for Great Brit ian and the continent of Europe, to say nothing of her hog and beef a'so the products r.f other sections, such as petroleum and naval stores A lesson of economy has been forced upon the people bv the late panic the importance of which can hardly be estimated. "170" is the brand of cigars to smoke, and will give more genuine comfort in the eame length of time than any other cigar to be found. The "1S76" is made by Slavick Rothfuss, and they have the "La Crema," "Aurora" and "Nobby," which they sell by wholesale and rcta 1.

They keep all kinds of smokingand chewing tobacco, pipes, Corner of Market and Main streets, Fort colt. Hawk-eyed her at the depot; but his prey vanished. There is nothing a man will so stoutly deny as th possession of an umbrella. A new stock of fine Toilet Soaps, just received at. Holmes' ttrrg store.

Question for good tcmplers. How many scruples should there be a drain. For Pure Drugs and Medicines, go to Holmes', corner of Johnson and Riggs Avenue. Frank Falconerwho left the city scv. cral weeks ago, Avilhout bidding his friends good bye, has returned: A moral.

The Tcrre Haute Journal says: "Cox are pugnacious bird. The one in Congress makes noise enough for a whole hennery." Mr. D. B. Wood, conductor on the K.

T. R. R. who met with a severe accident, on his train last fully recovered. We will circulate from two to five thousand extra copies ot the SunntisE every week free, for the exclusive benefit of our advertisers.

Happy and contented, healthyand robust are the families in this city, who buy their groceries atM. Johnson's, Johnson Avenue. A puck of wolves Sherbuno Co Minnesota, chased a couple of lawyers live miles, and the N. 0. Republican thinks it showed a lack of professional courtesy.

"The evidence shovs that he sot up with her night after night, and they scpioze hands and talked soft, and I think she ought to have about $23 damages," was the charge og a Kansas judge to a jury in a breach of premise case. The way to bridge over hard to practice economy. If you have been spending two dollars for luxuries, cut it down to a dollar a a half. If you have been paying high prices for groceries, stop at once, and ever after deal at M. Johnson's.

Johnson Avenue. The good natured and accommodating W. G. Lock wood, lately conductor on the.M., K. T.

R. has taken charge of the Parsons Rouse. He has re-painted, re-fitted, papered and scrubbed it. from garret to and intends to make it the popular hotel of the city. His boarders speak in high praise of the eatables he is setting before their clutches three times a day.

We read a let ter from the editors of the Fort Scott Pioneer, directed to G. G. Grady, in which they endeavor to black nail Maj. Morris, the gentlemanly agent of Grady's Circus and Menagerie We happen to to know something about that contract spoken of, and will say that it looks to us like a black mailing dodece of the first water. Is this what yon e.v taught at sunday school? Our Pot Office If there is any good in our present so-called civil service system, or in the so-called civil service reforms, let our Senators and Representatives make it manifest by using their influence to have the nomination of W.

Hayes, for our postmaster, confirmed. If it is their desire that integrity strict attention to business and modest worth should prevail over the shallow brained egotism of a blatant, lc ud mouthed politician, who has a chronic hankering after offices lie never gets, now is a good time for them to show it by frowning upon the application of this man, who has to go into the adjoining villages to get signers to his petition. Mr. Hayes took this office when the salary would not have paid his board at a second class hotel, lie performed his duties faithfully and in a way that gave satisfaction to all. lie is supported by four-fifths of our best business men and citizens, and why he should be removed to make room for a man who does not possess half the merit, and is well known, sent his emissaries into adjoining towns which had post offices, to get names on his petition, we cannot see.

A man who would resort to a trick of that kind or countenance it, is manifestly unlit for the position he asks. If you want genuine benefit from printers' ink, advertise in the "Suit-raisE." The proceeds Friday night last, of Simon's talented theatrical troupe, were $87.50, the profits of which will go to the Parsons Library Association. A petrified negro was lately found in a garret over a law office. It was supposed that he undertook the study of the law and became absorbed in Black-stone. One of our city butchers thought a fine bird dog was good meat for his sausage mill, and dropped him on the spot.

The owner of the dog has brought suit or $100 damages. 1 Smoking on an empty stomach was what killed Robert Wright, in London recently. Moral Never carry an empty stomach, and buy your cigars of Hayes, Pierson at the post office. G. G.

Grady of circus fame, returned Monday morning with a number of new performers for his mammoth show. Allow us to say that Grady's Circus is the best, and gives better satisfaction than any show that ever traveled in this Congregatinoal Church, On Friday afternoon at 3 o'clock, a meeting preparatory to communion will be held at the Congregational church, at which time any persons who may be disposed to unite with the church, either by letter on on profession of their faith, may present their applications. Next Sabbath is the regular communion season of this church and the sacrament of the Lord's Supper will be observ ed at 12 A. in which all followers of the Lord Jesus Christ, who may be present, are cordially invited to join. P.

M. Griffin, Pastor. The Ch Advocate of Jan 31, says: That the people, unacquainted with Indian affairs, and knowing nothing of the rue intentions of the various bills introduced in Congress to organize the Territory of Oklahoma, might be influenced to sanction the establishment of a erritorial form of Government, is our greatest dread. The great heart of the American people is not given to wrong, and if they only knew the rea condition of the Indians and their claim upon the Government, and feeling thet with them rests the honor of their nation, popular indignation against the 'contemplated fraud would drive the question out of Congress. A large stock of perfumes, fine hair oils, face powders, and lilly whites, all new and fresh at Holmes', corner Johnson and Riggs Avenue..
