The blaze started on the first floor from the stove used for heating1 irons and spread to the stairway at once. The inmates, Polish Jew men, women and children of all ages, became panic stricken when they saw their mode of escape by the narrow stairway cut off and, there being- no fire escape apparatus at the rear, a fearful struggle ensued for the fir escape ladders in front.

The whole front of the building was soon alive with women and men fight-inr for places on the fire escapes. The ceremony is concluded by a very mournful song Bung by the companions of the bride, who then conduct her again to the home of her parents, as, owing to the extreme probability of one or the other retracting at any moment by reason an unfavorable omen, no house is built until the ceremony is completed. I favor the like use of gold and silver coin in payment by the treasury of government obligations not expressly by law made payable In gold alone, such as silver certiilcates, pension warrants, military and naval pay rolls, civil-service lists, etc. As to the plan of currency issue favored by me, I hold to the use of both gold and silver as the standard money of the rountry and to the coinage of loth gold and silver without discrimination against either metal, and further believe that if the president and Mr. Carlisle carry this out so far as not to conflict with the Sherman law and fearlessly employ the use of gold and silver coin in all payments by the government, tho condition of the treasury would be relieved and times improve throughout the country. The basis of my conduct on all political measures shall be the democratic platform of upon which the president and all the democratic congressmen were elected. It will be the duty of the present congress to keep inviolate the pledge of the democratic platform, and in the discharge of this sacred trust anticipate and demand the support of the administration.
