There aro a great many strangers making Independondence visitsnoir, looking for locations. They understand that the town is deserted, but whn they come they are astonished, and aro constrained to sottle with us. There are somo men wild enough to bo building, notwithstanding the adversity under which you seem to think we are laboring. There was one of the largest crowds in town Saturday that has been here for some time. The town was crowded to its utmost, and everybody did a big business.

The juvenile portion of the community is happy, extremely happy, and in fact their knows no bounds. It is comingSells Bros great 7 elephant railroad menagerie and circus. We can with some difficulty comprehend what a simple railroad menagerie and circus is but when it comes to such a railroad as a 7 elephant railroad, it is entirely beyond tho comprehension of the human intellect. Doubtless it is a wonderful affair and I would ask "What does it profit" a town if it gains the M. W.

railroad and loses the 7 Elephant railroad? The M. W. is a very small thing beside the 7 Elephant railroad. Well, as I previously remarked, it is coming. Last Saturday night tho advance agent papered all the houses in town and two big bulletin boards.

Consequently, Sunday school was rather thin the next day. The boys all put down tho examination of tho show bills as the special business of that day, and. every one adhered most rigidly to the previously conceived plan. The pictures wero very tempting indeed. Ciierryrale, Kansas. J. JEL. COUHTJNISr, NOTARY PUBLIC For the benefit of our large list of readers outside the state, many of whom have written us for information about Southern Kansas and her railroad facilities; and more especially the prospects of CherryYale, we have prepared the aoovo map, which shows accurately the present system of railroads of tho southeastern portion of the State all east of Junction City and south of Toneka. The dark cloud of financial depression which has hunpj over the land is now clearing away capital is coming out of its hiding places, and the great era of railroad building in Southern Kansas is now fully inaugurated.

Work has already begun on some six roads in this portion of tho state. There are only three, however, in which Cherryvale is directly interested, one oi which is the St. Louis, Wichita Western, from Oswego to Wichita, which will cross the old L. G. (now called the Kansas City, Lawrence Southern at Cherryvale, giving us a direct outlet to St.

Louis aud the East, and also giving us the benefit of competition between a road working in the in terest of Kansas City and Chicago and one which is exclusively a St. Louis road a competition which can never be compromised, for corns promise is a word which never ha been and never can be recognized between two cities as bitterly at enmity as are Chicago and St. Louis. Work has begun on this road all along the line from Oswego to Wichita, to which latter place it is to be completed by January 1st," 1880. The second road in the building of which we are directly interested is the K.

L. S. from this point west through the southern tier of counties of Kansas to the point where it will meet the Southern Pacific at Santa Fe or Tucson, giving a grand trans-continental route from New York by Pittsburg, Cin cinnati, St. Louis, Cherryvale, Santa Fe, Tucson and Los Angeles to the Golden Gate, and placing Cherryvale upon one of the greatest and most direct routes of travel across the continent. One hundred miles or more of this road will bo com pleted thisv summer, and the extension will necessitate the building of machine shops at this, the end of the second division from Kansas City and.

indeed, we have been assured by officers of the road that these shops will bo built within a year. There alss seems every probability that the St. Western road w.ill establish its round house, repair shops, here, from the fact that Cherryvale is the central point between Pierce City, the end of the division east, and "Wichita, one hundred miles west of us. Another road, which is contemplated, and by which articles of incorporation have rocently been filed with the Secretary of State, will connect ns with Parsons, twenty miles northeast of us, and with the great K. T.

direct route to Chicago. When this is completed, our city will have a railroad outlet in six different directions, and will be the greatest railroad town in Southern Kansas. It is believed that the branch of road south to Coffeyville will soon be extended to its ultimate terminus at Galveston, which will be another great addition to oiir railroad system. It is unnecessary to use any other argument than the presentation of the above facts to prove that Cherryvale has a very bright future in store, for all the large cities of the laud are indebted almost entirely to railroads for their growth, and there is not a city in the United States with the railroad facilities which we will have in a year which is not thriving and growing rapidly, and which does not number its inhabitants by thousands. Cherryvale Jias to-day the largest body of good land tributary to it of any and all towns in Southern Kansas; it is the best watered, having Big Hill aud Sycamore creeks on the east and south, with Drum creek and its tributaries on the west and north.

Both these creeks are well timbered, and the Verdigris river, only seven miles away, furnishes all the native lumber needed for building purposes. Then we have fine roclr for building purposes unsurpassed in the state easy to be quarried, soft for work, and capable of being fashioned into any form desired. Our lime and sand rock make the very best of stonewall; it is handy to be gotten and breaks with great uniformity, as many miles offence built of it in this country will testify. Our soil is of various kinds, but mostly of a rich, black loam, which readily yields an abundant harvest of all kinds it properly attended. Corn yields from fifty to one hund red bushels to the acre, and wheat from fifteen to fifty bushels.

We have a natural corn and wheat country, but the production is yet in its infancy. Flax is a success and yields from eight to twenty-five bushels to the acre. Castor beans are a good, paying crop. Oats do well, giving an average of fifty bushels per acre. Barley seems to be a native of the country, and no better can be raised anywhere.

Rye does extremely well. Our potatoes and other vegetables beat the world. As to fruits and berries, it is enough to say that Kansas was awarded the first premium at the Centennial for this class of productions. TOOD. A.
