By an uct of congress dated 188C, the quartermaster department at Washington, D. was authorized to furnish headstones for all unmarked graves of deceased union soldiers, sailors and marines, either of the regulur or volunteer army, and whether they died in the service or after their muster out or discharge. These stones are of white marble, thirty-six inches long, ten inches wido and four inohes thiols, and are to be inscribed with the name, age, date of death, regiment and company of the deceased. In March, 1887, G.

W. Miller, quartermaster of Arkansas City post, G. A. cognizant of the fact there were a number of soldiers' graves in Eiverview cemetery that were unmarked, sent an order to the quartermaster department at Washington for seven headstones, but was informed that the orders had come in so fast from every quarter that the appropriation had been exhausted, and that his order would be placed on file until another appropriation was made. Nothing more was thought of the matter until yesterday, when he received a letter stating that the headstones had been shipped and had already reached St.
