Peck, the pastor, preached in the lecture room below. After the sermon he baptized seventeen persons in the new baptistery (which was completed last week). They were mostly young men. The people in both rooms comprised one of the largest assemblies that ever gathered in Lawrence. There are still, several candidates for baptism.

The meetings continue each night as heretofore. We witnessed a baptizing on Sunday, by the colored Baptist minister, Rev. Mr. James, of several candidates for church membership. It was to us certainly an impressive scene.

Standing on the muddy banks of the Kaw, foaming and roaring over the dam, the tall, weird looking, dusky African held spell-bound his eager believing audience by a simple touching description of the baptism of Jesus by John in the sacred waters of the Jordan. Jesus did not simply step upon the bank of the river and have a few drops of water, more or less, sprinkled upon his brow he did not have made an exquisitely formed tank into which he might step and be baptized, but he went down into the water he was buried in baptism beneath the yielding waters of tbe Jordan he came up out of the waters. The white grub worm has, for the first time in my knowledge, appeared in our strawberry patches in such numbers as to seriously injure tbe plantations. The indication ot its presence are of the plants wilting and gradually dying, as its roots are slowly but surely being destroyed. At this stage an investigation will generally disclose the worm busy at work upon tbe roots on one side of the crown. You may find the entire roots on one side destroyed; sometimes not only the roots are gone, but also the crown scored as it eaten by mice. Often the thoroughfare of a mole passes under the plant, and this little animal is charged with the injury done the plant, because no trace of any other agency is discovered while the truth is it has killed and eaten the worm, tbe author of the mischiet.

We have at the same time aimed, and shall in the future aim, to be honest in criticism and faithful in record to express opinions candidly and to tell the truth fearlessly. No cause can be advanced in the minds of intelligent people by suppressing the truth, or by attempting to color the facts of very-day history. The proprietors of the Globe-Democrat can point with pride to the, record which this journal has made in the past as an enterprising, active and energetic collator of current news political, local and commercial. In this respect they have no rival in St.

Louis, or in the West. With a vigilant corps ot reporters in the city, and of correspondents at all the principal news centers East and West, they have obtained, without regard to expense, and in advance of all their cotemporaries. the leading incidents of each day's history, and in many notable instances they have distanced all Western rivals in the fullness and detail of the news thus obtained. For the fullness and accuracy of its commercial and market reports the Globe-Democrat has been especially noted in the past, and with renewed exertions in this direction, we can safely promise to hold in the future the precedence already won. tERMS: Postage Prepaid on all Editions.
