Some of the Wichita papers claim that the city council has commen ced cutting the city expenses. The harvest is heavy, but the part cut will be The taxes in that metropolis are higher than the corn stalks in the valley, and you can't straddle either ot them like you can the platform of a political party. Will Bolton, of the Woodward News, claims that they not only have discovered gold in the vicinity of that city, but they have also discovered a number of soap mines. We take it for granted that Will can tell the truth when he tries, and that this is one ot the rare instances when he was serious. He does not claim that they have found the gold in paying quantities, but the soap is in great abundance.

An exchange says ttyat a good crop of corn can be raised every year in this part of Kansas, drouth and hot winds to the contrary notwithstanding. The plan is to list the ground in the fall and winter. Follow the lister with a subsoil plow loosening the ground to the depth of two feet or more from the surface. When planting, split ridges. Corn, thus planted, is not affected by the dry weather as it receives nourishment from the deep subsoil.

The same paper says that the principal trouble among farmers is that there are too many men (working at that business because they have nothing else to do. If they would work eight or ten hours a day in stead of sixteen, and spend the balance of the time studying better methods of doing the work, they would accomplish better results. Nessly returned from Pur-cell last Friday night. Ball game, pony race, etc at the A.O. U. W. pic-nie on July 4th.

Trice had a party of land buyers through here yesterday. Dan Winn had a load of hogs on the market Tuesday. Santa Fe bridge carpenters are in town. Don't forget the Sunday school convention on the 30th. The Chautauqua visitors have all returned home.

Wintield won two out of three games with Webb City. The new iron bridge for the Pole cat is being unloaded here to-day. Ed. Davis was in this vicinity yesterday lootcine for a school. He is a very successful teacher.

Mrs. James and daughter, of Wichita, visited Ida Winn here the first of the week. Jerry Hammond has finished bis stone bridge at Bushnell. A nice job, they say. Rev.

Miller is on the program at the Sunday school convention to be held at Oxford. Ed. Glass, Earnest Barnhart, Alf. Greenland, Geo. Dale and Len.

and Charley Turner saw Winfield and Webb City play ball last Tuesday. The boys are all base ball enthusiasts. A close and exciting game of ball between Udall and Akron was played here last Saturday and resulted in a victory for the Reds by a score of 21 to 16. The same teams will play here again on the 4th. Messrs and Mesdames Gardiner, Ratliff, Nessly, Latham, Dale and Brady; Mesdames Smith, Staton, Hilderbrand and Goodrich; Misses Dale, Brady and Hilderbrand; and Messrs Pontius, Hatfield, Sense and Gaddie, were Chautauqua visitors since our last issue.

Mattox is again under sentence of death. He was bro't fo Wichita from '1 opeka, first of this week, and on Wednesday udge Williams sentenced him to be hanged in Wichita on Friday, October 11, 1865. This is the third time he has been convicted of the murder of John Mullins As he is under the sentence of death by the U. S. court, his case having been through the supreme court, there is no authority except the President that can come between him and death.

Don't forget to spend the 4th ol July at Winn's grove. Free transportation to and from all trains for visitors. The people in the vicinity of Mt. Vernon, 111., are greatly worked up over a remedy tor the chinch bugs. Chas.

Harper, farmer near there, gives it after having killed the bugs on a twenty acre field. Take about three table'! spoonfuls of soft soap, dissolve it in just enough hot water to thoroughly dissolve it, then add one-half gallon of kerosene oil Take about one pint of this mixture to one and one-half gallons of water and stir thoroughly. Then spray the field wherever there are bugs. Harper reports them all dead and the people in that vicinity are get ting ready to try it. A.
