Miss Leila Burwell and Miss Alice Holman left A NEW DEPARTURE. la order to expedite the apprehending of thieves who prey on the farmers of Leavenworth County and to assist the farmers in the early recovery of their property, I have arranged for the use of space in this paper each week for a department to be knows as "Sheriff's Department." This department will be devoted exclusively to publishing official notices of thefts. In order to secure the advantage of a notice of theft through these columns it Is only necessary for the complainant to notify the Sheriff's Office and the publication will be prepared by me and at absolutely no cost to the person suffering the loss. The object of the department is to enable the facts of thefts to become widely known so that suspicious characters can be reported to this office and Investigated at once. If any farmer reads of a theft through this department and has knowledge which he believes will lead to the arrest of the thief, he should at once notify the Sheriff's Office.

This department will thus become a medium which will tend to bind the farmers together for the purpose of protection and the recovery of stolen property. There will be absolutely no cost to anyone, the only condition being that the person suffering from theft must first notify the Sheriff's Office in order to secure a notice in this department. The purpose of this condition is simply to insure the genuineness of all notices. 1 hope that the farmers of Leavenworth County will avail themselves of this opportunity to greatly facilitate the apprehending of thieves. Respectfully, STANCE MEYERS, Sheriff.
